I'm trying to re-install my NTL Broadband, but I've hit a stumbling block. I've just wiped my hard-drive and re-installed XP after a few problems with the worms we've had recently (don't even go there!)... everything seems normal, until I attempt to install BB.

I run Broadband installer, and it all goes well up to the point where:

It then asks me to check the lights are on on the modem: check!

And then I get the following message:

Now what's all that about then?

A) What does that mean?

B) What have I done to make that happen?

C) How do I fix it?

hey,

are you behind a router? If there is a router between the cable modem and your PC, this can make it fail as the Network Card tries to renew from the Router & not NTL ;)

I AM assuming you are connecting to the internet via Net Card and not USB?

I've got a router in-between the modem and the ethernet card, but it's a pretty transparent one: all I've done in the past is plug it in and away we go. No need to edit any settings from within Windows to get it working. Might not be a router, might very well be a hub? To be honest I don't know, it's a massive HP jobbie my next-door neighour lent me...

Unlike the Netgear one which doesn't want to work no matter how hard I try... however, that's another story.

I've reinstalled XP as I have a number of times recently (worms etc) and it's all worked fine before. I've just got the message on the last time I wiped everything for a clean-start.

switch off PC, plug modem directly into PC (NO router), run install, after its finished plug back the router :)

if you are behind a router you shouldnt have to run any NTL software, just set the network card to use DHCP... check the router is getting an IP though ( i cant see how that would have been affected by you reinstalling your PC , but just as a check )

i know...but believe it or not i HAVE to run it on my PC before it will connect?!?! strange but very true :(

umm.. no you don't

The only thing you need is the driver for the Netgear FA311 - from www.netgear.com :D

Also reboot the SACM and the router :D

as I posted in other thread as well I got same issue.

1 - I am using no router
2 - modem connected directly to lan card
3 - lan card set to dhcp
4 - error unable to contact dhcp server ip renew failed

Also I have 2 lan ports and I tried both, same error on both.

A friend told me I have to ring up CS to get my modem firmware upgrade so I didnt bother and went back to usb.

any ideas?

Ok first thing have you tried just browsing, because if you have registerd the Broadband before it is still registerd, no need to run the disk and all that, if browsing doesn't work, re-boot you modem (1st) router(2nd) and PC (3rd) :) Don't run the CD

providing your nic drivers are correctly isntalled all you have to do is reboot modem (leave off doe 20 seconds) and router. wait for lights to settle on modem before powering on router. finally reboot pc and you should be up and browsing.

hmm I didnt try powering of modem, I will try it again if i ever get the energy to do it.

The lan card did have an ip but it was a 169.x.x.x not mu usual 80.7.x.x tried the net anyway and also tried the reg page but both failed.

If you're on eth - don't use the CD and don't go to the reg page, you don't need either.

But if you had a 169 IP using the nic try unplugging the coax to see if the IP changes to 192, if it does, you need to get in contact with tech support, if it stays 169 then it's an issue with the eth card, meaning use USB or get the nic checked/replaced.

Have a look at http://forum.nthellworld.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4983 for info on testing your connection (doesn't work for the Terayon modem).

Chrysalis, you dont have the same problem as Glitch. Look here instead: http://forum.nthellworld.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4983.

Glitch has a problem because of the router. The Installer is trying to renew the computers ip address from a pre-reg to a registered IP. Obviously this iant going to happen because the pc gets its IP from the router.

Don't you have to clone the MAC address of the cable modem first?

Um, we've linked to the same thread....or was that what the "doh" was about? Nevermind it's all good :p

Anyway - if he's getting a 169 when the router is attached then there's something definitely amiss comms-wise on the PC as it should at the very least be 192.x.x.x - if it is a router.

Might be an idea to miss out the router altogether to test it out. Also, when using a router - if you get a problem with the connection and start getting an iffy IP try rebooting everything in order = All off, modem on (wait for it to lock on) then turn the router on and then turn the pc on.
