Do you bank with Barclays?

Then beware as there's a 'phishing' scam going on......

Genuine Barclays site: https://ibank.barclays.co.uk/

Phishing site: http://www.barclays.gb.com/

:nono:

You can enter any surname & 7 digit code to get you past Step one, but on the 2nd page it asks you for every letter of you password....:Yikes:

Grrrrr

Thanks for the warning!

Although how any customer who has regularly used a screen that looks like this:

Can fail to be suspicious when suddenly it looks like this:

...is beyond me! Especially as the phisher's English becomes extremely poor as soon as they have to write their own instead of just copying from the real website (if exist) :erm:

Still, some people will fall for anything I guess.

Re: Do you bank with Barclays?

asking for every letter of your password is a bit of a give away. Not too clever at all. Would have been smarter to ask for 4 letters and then fail the transaction and force the person to try again and ask for the other letters.

One thick Phisher

I couldn't agree more Chris, but it does happen unfortunately.

Just thought I would share it as a friend of mine rang me to ask if I knew anyone that banked with Barclays. :)

I have to agree, it looks VERY suss.

Having said that, it does make me think of a couple of guys in Amsterdam.... "Congratulations, you have won the global hyper lottery....." and plenty of people are gullable enough to fall for that.

Well why are people going to this site? Why are they not paying attention to what addy they type in?why are they NOT listening to anything mentioned about this in newspapers/magazines/tv/radio and on the internet.Do they just walk around with their eyes and ears shut and brain disengaged?

If people are stupid/lazy enough not to take the extra care about their online banking they probably should stay right off the internet altogether because they deserve to lose money and they only encourage these phishers to keep trying.I wonder how many walk around with their pin numbers written down in wallets and handbags?

That is mailbox uk's address - I host some servers at that address

Re: Do you bank with Barclays?

Try using nslookup to get the IP address, then 'whois' to find who hosts the site. You'll find it does not seem to be the ISP quoted by Bifta, though I suppose there could be some DNS trickery involved.

Yep, Bristol isn't in London, but the remaining details are correct. The postcode given exists, and is indeed for Avebury Road, in Ashton Vale, Bristol. From what I remember of my time living in Bristol, it's in quite a nice area of Bristol too.

Maybe we should give him a call on that number to see if it's legit too! ;)

I bank with Barclays and they never send me emails.Snail mail yes, emails no.In fact they do warn against such emails.

Could/should this thread should be renamed to bank phishing emails because I've had several purporting to come from
several of our different High Street banks thus far and they have all been along the same lines.

If your Barclaycard account is disabled for whatever reason, there is of course a number on the card you can call to sort it out. It happened to me once; apparently if more than a certain number of transactions are made in a certain length of time, the account is automatically disabled as a precaution, on the assumption it may have been got at. I called them, they verified my identity (hey, look, no ID card but they managed it anyway!) and went through each transaction to ensure it was me who actually made each one. After that, they just re-enabled it, no problemo...and from then on, I made sure to limit the number of transactions in a week. ;)
But they would not do this anonymously, i.e. over the Internet - only if the cardholder contacts them directly will the account be re-enabled. You can't even ask your local branch to do it, or rather you can ask but they can't do it; you have to ring Barclaycard.

Some of the emails do give the correct email address for Barclay's ibank site...but I'm willing to bet that's not where it actually takes you. Doubtless anyone who's never coded HTML might not be aware that a hyperlink and its tag don't necessarily have to read the same, and that's how some of them fall for it. For me, though, it's always the subtle errors in phraseology and/or grammar that give away the fact that English isn't the first language of whoever sent the email. Having studied English at AEB level (similar to GCE, but harder) does come in handy sometimes. :p:

I've asked at my local branch about Barclays' email policy. Here it is: they do not, EVER, send unsolicited email to any customer, even if you have sent them an email, such as a service inquiry. They're far, far more likely to call you and/or use snail mail. If you get an email claiming to be from Barclays, it isn't. END OF STORY.

I don't doubt the same is true of the other large banks; they obviously have a vested interest in helping their customers avoid getting phished. General rule: delete any email claiming to be from any bank, whether you bank with them or not - and do not, EVER, reply to them; all that'll do is confirm a valid email address, and then you're stuffed.

I often wonder just how successful these sort of scams are because they are so fake. I never click on an email link to a secure site.

Quite surprising that I have never had one through claiming to be from the Yorkshire bank.

As infuriating as it is, it's hard enough for me to log in to the real site. I doubt it would be a target because of this, I could tell you my login code and password and you'd not be able to access my account ;)

Ok I'll bite. Why won't they give you an internet bank account?

I got one after I got cheesed off with the telephone account because I wanted to sort my account out myself instead of dealing through someone else..It never crossed my mind that I wouldn't be allowed one seeing as I've been a customer since I was 17 and had two accounts with them.

The only reason I can see for not having one is because you don't already have an account with them.

Re: Do you bank with Barclays?

A lot of customers get phone calls off fraudsters just going through the phonebook pretending to be from barcalys. Then they ask them to provide full name, address, telephone, work telephone, date of birth and mothers maiden name. The fraudster then rings back and does whatever he wants with full access into the account.

They have even phoned up and said "for verification purposes could you confirm your online banking membership number, passcode and memorable word". Loads of customers fall for it.

No matter how much education a bank gives to the customer people just dont listen or think it will ever happen to them.

Because I joined a joint account with my partner...as we just bought a house it was a good idea pool our current accounts together.

We have personal accounts with another bank.
