[Merged] NTL new products for 2005
 

We've all heard of ntl's new broadband tiers, to be rolled out in early 2005.
3mb > £37.99 (40GB)
2mb > £24.99 (30GB)
1mb > £17.99 (5GB)

but, are ntl going to keep their 300k service.
before the news of the speed upgrades were announced, it was rumoured that a lower speed tier would be kept (150k was previously stated i believe). then after the official news was posted, a lower tier service was dismissed...or was it?

the following ntl presentation clearly shows a 300k service being kept (apparently with no cap) at a cost of £15.99:

so, does anyone know whether ntl are going to keep a 300k service, or is it a mistake :confused:

(or possibly is it a conspiricy against me with the aim of confusing moi :Yikes: )

Got a question what does 2H/05 as in pvr launch date?

To stay on topic - They sure would of had to of thought about it if it was a mistake, the only isp with 300k is them + they reduced the price...sounds legitimate to me..but then again, me :D

It's there in black and white, or should I say purple and green.

Damn - just when I'd more or less decided that an upgrade to 1Mbit, a downgrade to 5Gb/mo quota, and a £25 fee for not even replacing the box, would suit.... (pretty sure I'd be within the quota, but I'd rather not have to watch it).

£2 a month cheaper, if it IS the same deal I'm on, YES PLEASE! - and I'd recommend it to friends.
If it gets the same 5Gb quota, then I could probably do better elsewhere on a 512 or 256k ADSL.

Another "later" item, is METERED BROADBAND - I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that one - just depends if it would cut the price of MY OWN average usage, and any extra was not too frightening.


PS. If they re-introduced/re-priced 300k ay £15.99, only a complete mug or penny pincher would stay on dialup at £12.49 (I think that's what it is now?) - perhaps they thinking of withdrawing from dialup?

Good find - and did you notice page 11 refers to 'metered broadband' - I'm reluctant to mention the 'thing that bakers and cyclists and international sportspeople wear on their heads' word but could that be a solution ?

so a 300k service is very likely :shocked: yay, i think i'll try 1mb first, then maybe move to 300k (unless it has something like a 1gb a year cap! :dozey: )

Fascinated by some of the language; cannibalisation, bogof I'm beginning to wonder about NTL staff. Can anyone explain these terms as far as NTL speak goes?

I suppose the 300k option ties in with the Telewest 256K?

so does this report mean the current tiers will be scrapped, so if i decide to upgrade to 3mbit i cannot downgrade back to 1.5mbit later on ?

These are presentations by the CEOs of NTL and Telewest respectively, and confirm that both will be launching VOD and PVRs in the second half of 2005.

Page 15 of the second link even gives a picture of the Telewest PVR box, along with some specs.

Hmm, do you think the actual bb upgrades classified as bundles launch or metered bb? Or just the bb is metered at metered?

I think ntl: is likely to use Samsung to provide their PVR, heres an old .pdf document giving specs on the Samsung SMT-3100C looks similiar to the SMT-2100C ntl currently use

Looks to me that metered BB is a new product to attract customers who would normally choose PAYG.
IF SO.... it could be attractive to people who normally access one of the free 56Kbs services by offering BB speeds with no monthly fixed payment. When the time comes that the person wants to switch to a monthly fixed price product they are more than likely going to choose NTL as they already have the equipment installed, good marketing ploy, if it works...

Or better still, NTL+Tivo.

If ntl have any sense at all, and if there is a god, then they'll give us a box with two tuners based on Tivo series 2. All other PVRs aren't fit to use that name ;-)

I can see that the Telewest box (according to the linked pdf) has three tuners; are you saying that the ntl one will too because it will be the same box due to the upcoming merger that's being talked about. Or are you just guessing?

looks like sky+ will soon be having something chasing its tail!

excellent news as this hopefully means NTL will be competing with SKY and no doubt good competition will mean SKY might drop their PVR subscription costs.

I would imagine this would happen, you find yourself on a legacy tarrif, you can stay on it for as long as you want, but onece you have moved off you can't go back.
This is how Orange work on their legacy tarrifs.

now they got this cash from selling broadcast stuff maybe we will actually see Leicester get same standard of service as other area's digital tv and full speed internet would be nice :)
