Raistlin 08-12-2004 19:13

Re: Set Top Box

So that would be VoD then?

Umm, Ok.

Well, :welcome: to CF.

If you want to know what STB my cable TV comes through then it's manufactured by Samsung.

Ok, just read another thread and I guess that wasn't what you meant. Sorry, haven't got VoD.

If you mean video on demand, then it's not live here yet.

It will be used through regular NTL STBs, which are manufactured by Pace and Samsung.

I've no more idea than anybody else. NTL say it will start rolling out in Q1 next year. We shall see.

Why do you think I'd know? I don't work for 'em! :)

Ah, well, you see, I didn't know that they planned to roll it out next year.

Apologies if I got the wrong Tristan.

As far as I know there's only one of me :S

Personally I think it will have to wait until the next round of software upgrades in Bromley areas, but I might be wrong :)

Re: Set Top Box

As far as I know, the only ones used by UK cablecos (NTL and Telewest) are manufactured by Pace or Samsung.

Re: Set Top Box

However. looking at a picture of the new PVR STB planned for release by Telewest next year, it seems to be manufatured by Scientific Atlanta (as far as I can make out from the picture).

Re: Set Top Box

Telewest already use a box made by Scientific Atlanta (the SA4000)

Alongside the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4000DVB they are now also using the SA Explorer 4200DVB

Re: Set Top Box

I think what Picolo is talking about is VOD over IP. The STB companies he mentions all make IPTV STBs for video over xDSL telco networks.
Sorry Picolo NTL uses the DVB-C standard on its cable network, it is not video over IP.:)

The 4000DVB is pretty much the same as the NTL Pace boxes but the card reader is on the right instead of the left, same display same buttons etc, has more memory though AFAIK.

Re: Set Top Box

Yes there is one Video over IP network in London operated by Video Networks called Home Choice. There are also a number of trials around Europe including a few limited deployments in Switzerland and Italy, but generally Video over IP is not catching on quickly. Most of the IPTV STB manufacturers are Europe based companies.

Re: Set Top Box

I think Kingston (may) use Video over IP not 100% however

Ohh thx!
Home Choice have a nice service, so many features in their packets...
Do you know which brand produces their set top boxes??

Well, u know Pace set top boxes, right? Are they good?

:)

MytchettMan 18-12-2004 06:26

Re: Set Top Box

Pace are good boxes, but I think Home Choice have changed to Amino IPTV boxes. And yes Kingston announced they were moving to an IP based network, but I'm not sure if at the moment it's just telephony or telephony and video, but it probably will be soon both.
