Several mistakes in this artcile:

http://www.ntlworld.com/partners/itn/sport/491601.php

Man City 3 - 2 Middlesbrough.

Sorry ntl, but its the other way round.

Middlesbrough 3 - 2 Man City

Plus, they spelt Middlesbrough wrong. They added an extra o.

Also shows the same on the main page, http://www.ntlworld.com under Sport.

Oh, and while we are at it, how come the date is a dodgy format? 2004-12-06. Why not 06/12/2004 ?

Typical :o NTL getting it wrong as usual. (Why do so many people on here hate NTL? I have been with them for 2 years and never had any problems with them what so ever:confused: ) I take it you follow the blue half of Manchester then badnbusy? However their homepage leaves a lot to be desired anyway tbh!

Re: ntlworld.com mistake.

Just did a search on google and interestingly middlesbrough is spelt just as much middlesborough as middlesbrough. Not sure which one is right.

I always have spelt it personally middlesborough.

One of the definitions in the dictionary for borough is

"A medieval group of fortified houses that formed a town having special privileges and rights. "

I remember the difficulty of learning how to spell Edinburgh when I was a kid. I wonder if Edinburgh was in fact actually edinborough but it got misspelt in the days before spelling was standardised. You know hundreds of years ago people didnt have dictionaries and they spelt things as they sounded.

Brough is not in the dictionary.

The reason i am focusing on the ending of the name is because some places have these common endings i.e shire

The information on that page in the original post isn't supplied by ntl, it's supplied by ITN (as can be seen from the URL). So blame them. :p:

It is in fact spelt Middlesbrough and therefor the football club is called Middlesbrough FC, ive always wondered why the supporters of this club call it Boro  Perhaps they really want to support Peterborough United! :D :o :erm:

I think you'll find NTL got it right - it's just the real world that got it wrong ;)

Re: ntlworld.com mistake.

Middlesbrough was originally supposed to be spelt Middlesborough, but there was a mistake on a legal document which meant that Middlesbrough was spelt the way it is.

Also while we're talking - the number of people who spell Teesside with only one s! :p: ;):D

SMH, bit off topic but following the theme, my mum, who likes to think she's a bit posh having transplanted herself from Hartlepool to Hertfordshire, insists Hertford is pronounced with a silent 't'. Can you confirm or deny the truth of this apparently ridiculous assertion (she once suggested when I was a wee slip of an urchin that I have elecution lessons because I was picking up the Hertfordshire accent, if you-know-worra-I-mean-awright-mate!) She is a bit bonkers.

And hurricanes in Hertford (sounds like an elecution lesson in itself!)? Dunno about that but I once got caught up in a whirlwind in Letchworth!

Being from the area, I can confirm there is a hard 't' in Hertford - but with the accent, it does sound more like Hard-ford...

Re: ntlworld.com mistake.

My mum would have it Harford. But then she'd probably cleanse the place of any working class oiks too!

Jimbo, Let's face it, you pronounce the 't' in Hertford so it's not looking good :) . Don't worry I'll not grass you up to her. I'm common as muck too and us oiks have got to stick together!! :)
