Firefox Extensions

I'm gonna do it ... I've downloaded the AthlonXP version from moox, and am about to install it .... Now ...

What extensions are people using ... and why, please give links if you can.

There has been plenty of discussions on extensions in the "Firefox 1.0 - released 9th Nov 04" thread. Try a search in there. ;)

I know ... but noone has listed the extension and why, hence this thread dedicated to the extensions only.

ok, the basics you'll need are: Java, Macromedia flash and Shockwave. other extensions and themes can be downloaded from http://update.mozilla.org

You'll need the sun java, but flash & shockwave comes with the installer.

none of those are "extensions" as such, nem is asking for reccomendations.. anyone that has installed FF will know where the default site is

nem. I've listed my current extensions here: http://s1lv3r.com/ext/index.php
You can install them directly from the page... much better than trawling through page after page of extensions. I'm making the assumption that you'll have similar tastes to me ;)
Once you've installed any, do a "check now" from the advanced section in the options which will update them if they're not current.

Top picks are: Adblock, BBCode, Tab Preferences, Bookmark Sync and GMail notify. The others are more or less cosmetic rather than adding functionality.

http://www.extensionsmirror.nl is much more descriptive than the mozilla site and is generally more up to date.

<--- *edit, nem has the dubious honour of being responsible for my first golden ball thanks nem :D :tu:

Sorry to kinda hijack thread, but just wondered if anyone is having probs with WeatherFox (v 0.5.1) ??

It works at work on my Dell Win 2000 lappy, and used to work on my old Dell XP desktop, but won't on my new Evesham XP desktop.

I've downloaded it, installed it, set it up, but in my taskbar at the bottom, all I have is foxytunes ext, GMail ext and the resize thing in the corner.

Again, apologies for hijacking..... :p:

Where did you tell it to place the weather information or is it not showing in your extension list at all? I have 0.5.1 running ok here with Noia2. Are you running a theme on FF?

Re: Firefox Extensions

extensions I have:

Foxytunes: to play music through my browser, you need to have some kind of player though
Weatherfox: to display my local weather in the browser and get updates hourly
Gmail Notifier: to log into gmail autonatically without going to gmail, it will tell you if you have any new mail
bbcode: to add bb code to forums if you don't know bb code, but cable forum does not support it
tweak network: to make firefox browsing faster
adblock: to block ads, you can choose what to block.....this is one to have
html validator: in the view page source this goes through all html and validates it from w3c, helpful for your own webpages
colourzilla: a colour picker, helpful for web pages, goes throug rgb, hex

thats all i got

ik

p.s. I used to have fireFTP, but it was ok, not as good as Filezilla though, but filezilla is not an extension it is a stand alone prog from the people at mozila

Re: Firefox Extensions

Greetings Gentlefolk.
Firefox Extensions - I canââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t download any of them.
I have tried the extensions page, a mirror site, and s1lv3rââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s site. I can
access all the sites Home page etc, but as soon as I hit the download button - nothing, zilch, zero, the hamster dies and the wheel stops turning.
I have tried with Firefox and IE6 with the same results.
I canââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t see that it is my settings because I have happily downloaded and installed a load of updates to other applications over the last couple of days, but I have done the usual cache purge, proxy dance etc., with no result. I have previously downloaded ( but later removed) a couple of extensions so it has worked!
In IE6 I get error on page in the status bar, and in Firefox (void)Javescript installer
Any and all suggestions gratefully received, because I am completely comfumbulated.
I have XP Pro firewall, AVG7, ADAware Spybot, spyware blaster and all permissions set (as far as I know ) to allow the download.

Bookmarks and Favourites.
Slightly different question. One of the things I miss with FF is a shortcut on the desktop to Bookmarks. Iââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ve got one for favourites for IE and use it all the time.
I was looking at Favourites convertor export which would seem to do what I want (if I erver get to dowload) but the reviews range from abysmal to terrible with only a few votes for. Has anybody tried it, or any similar extension?

Thank you for your attention, and if anyone can sort it for me I promise to think of you at Christmas. (wonâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t do anything, just think of you)

TIA Joe.

Re: Firefox Extensions

so you have tried:

clicking tools then click themes/extensions whichever it is you want.
in this box at the very bottom right you will have a link Get more extension/themes (depending on which you clicked).
This should take you to a page for downloads. click whichever ext/themes you wish. then click the inistall button.

Now if you have FF1.0 there may be a sort of tab like thing that appears on the website, (at the top) which may say you cannot download/it is not trusted, just allow to download from the site.

if this does not work, the best thing to do would be to delete the firefox program, and its folder, (after you have downloaded a new copy) and then re-install it, you may have picked up a bug with a certain extension/theme.
you don't/wont get rid of themes or extensions, but I would write down what I had and get all of them fresh.

I have had lots of probs with Adblock, so I no longer have that extension and now my FF works like a dream.

EDIT: go to tools - options - Web Features and click on Allow web sites to install software make sure it is ticked.

I hope this helps.

ik
p.s. to thank people you should just rep them, not think about them, it will make their christmas even more merrier.

Thanks. I did all that - themes work OK, but extensions do nothing at all
Looks like reinstall will be the only option.

Re: Firefox Extensions

if you uninstall firefox and its folder your extensions and themes are not affected, because these are found in you documents and settings folder (if you have windows xp that is), and the fresh copy will find these ok, you may have to import though.

if this does nothing to your problem, try uninstalling and re-installing your themse and extensions, one at a time to find out which one may be affecting your firefox.

Not really an extension, it lets you create a backup of all your profiles for Firefox, Mozilla and Thunderbird.

This isn't an extension but a good tip I found. If there's a single url in the address bar drop down menu that u want to get rid of without clearing the history or looking for the entry, just highlight it and press shift-del.

Handy for getting rid of misspelled entries

Following on from what Opera did a few years ago to MSN, Firefox and Thunderbird gets it's own bork bork bork!

In Thunderbird, it turns all the junk mail into bork and in firefox, in View on the toolbar, you can change the text to bork :)

I don't know if the extension from Mozilla Update can work in FF, but you can get it via the author's homepage.

Im surprised nobody is using Flashblock, its a great little addon to your browser that prevents Flash applications from starting or loading until you let them

So all those frikkin annoying Flash adverts don't even get a chance to start.

Instead of the flash starting you just get a play button centered where the flash app should be - if you then click on it the flash will start - otherwise it wont.

I use it a lot and its great.

You can get it here - http://flashblock.mozdev.org/

Just make sure you are blocking the right content.
e.g. http://*.ads.adserver.com/* and not just http://img654.ads.adserver.com/banners/someimage.jpg

TheBlueRaja 16-05-2005 22:15

Re: Firefox Extensions

You can dowload my adblock filter list from here (right click -> save as), it will block pretty much all the ads you will come accross and save you a lot of hassle. Just goto Tools -> adblock -> preferences then click on Adblock options and select import filters - then load my file.

That should do it. ;)

Mal 16-05-2005 22:47

Re: Firefox Extensions

I had that flashblock well over a year ago and I found it more annoying than all the adverts.

It may block the adverts, but it takes the point of view that all flash is evil, so it blocks sites made with flash as well, which can be annoying clicking on all the links, just to see one page.

Tezcatlipoca 16-05-2005 23:03

Re: Firefox Extensions

AdBlock doesn't always seem to want to work with FF1.0.4 (some people have problems, some don't).

Some info here: http://aasted.org/adblock/viewtopic....3a7af47881cd9b

And a fix for if it doesn't install at all (I had the problem & this cured it for me):

it only blocks what you tell it to...great if you know what you want, a bit of a pain if you don't! and downloading someone else's list probably won't be exactly what you want...

Yeah I know that.

It's showing up in the extensions screen, the options work, but the Adblock thing doesn't always show in the bottom right of the window, and likewise, the context menu options don't appear. grr

Well it must have changed then, because it worked the other way, it blocked everything then you had to say unblock and then only for that session.

This is quoted:
Quote:

Flashblock is an extension for the Mozilla and Firefox browsers that takes a pessimistic approach to dealing with Macromedia Flash content on a webpage and blocks ALL Flash content from loading. It then leaves a placeholder on the page that allows you to click to view the Flash content.
from here

If you can allow sites you know, that may be good, but if you're surf a lot, to a lot of unknown sites, it's really annoying. So much that I'd rather put up with the adverts.

It's an extension to think about* before you install it.

*Not saying that it's something deep and meaningful ;)

Or you can type them in yourself and use the | pipe character to separate them.

Yeah, I use the pipe option... works a treat. The only annoyance is that if you press Alt + Enter to go to homepage, it opens the homepage on your current tab, but also opens new tabs. I keep on doing it by mistake and end up with loads of tabs open by accident.

If you use the Tabbrowser Preferences extension you might want to update it from the author's site, as the automatic update for it, gives a strange, large message at the bottom of screen.
