A useful little tool for you
I cant keep count with how many times we've all been asked "How do i know what region i am in?".... so, in response to this, ive coded a little tool for everyone to use that tells them ;)
Here is a tool where you simply enter your postcode, and it will go away and do its stuff. Hope this will be useful :) Comments appreciated... James |

useful tool... but the post a bit spammy?
also, your instructions say "Please enter your postcode with no spaces or dashes (eg. OL1 1ZZ)" note the example you give has a space in the middle.... |

Well...it works. A little ot but how come this thread disappeared (moved to mod only forum im guessing?) earlier?

Re: A little useful tool for you
We needed it to perform medical research on it. It then became apparent that we were not going to find the cure for male pattern hair-loss using the limited data we had strived to develop so we ended the study early and returned it to this section.

Re: A little useful tool for you
Being annoying, I put in a Westminster postcode, W1A 1AA, aka Broadcasting House - this is in the Westminster franchise, which wasn't Bromley or Langley (it was only developed post-merger and has no DTV from either platform, but the UBR is configured as per Langley but is EuroDOCSIS like Bromley areas, so it's a hybrid. Comes up as Bromley - would it be possible to make it come up as 'non-DTV ntl area' or something?

Re: A little useful tool for you
Thanks for the 'medical research' findings.
Has anyone had any problems with it so far? Quote:
I have also updated it to provide the ex. c&w / original ntl statement. |

I would check the list, but I actually live in (near) Bromley, so, er, don't really need to...

Re: A useful little tool for you
OK...call me thick, but how do you get to the ntl_region page from the home page?
There doesn't appear to be a link to it. |
Re: A useful little tool for you
it does exactly what it says on the tin

How can a Glasgow postcode be Langley too? Clearly G73 is not Langley!

Areas that were originally Cable & Wireless franchises (like Manchester for instance), are served by the 'Bromley' headend HTH. |
Re: A useful little tool for you
Langley in this sense means the 'Langley Platform', DTV/BB in areas that were run by ntl before the 2000 merger. Areas that were run by Cable and Wireless are known as 'Bromley Platform'. Both are silly and misleading names, IMHO.
e.g. Glasgow, Nottingham and Oxford were ntl before 2000, thus are Langley Manchester, Leeds and Brighton were CWC before 2000, thus are Bromley. Edit: Damn you Neil! |
Re: A useful little tool for you
Thanks for the clarification.:D

Re: A useful little tool for you
Updated the page to output "You are on the xxx platform", rather than "You are in the xxx area".
Cheers |
Re: A useful little tool for you
OOOOOR
Alternatively when the NTL rep asks that question you reply "USE YOUR DAMN POST CODE CHECKER FOOL!" It will give franchise area, CSR Centre (with internal and external contacts), faults centre (with internal and external contacts), and a whole lot more useful info! :) |
