AVG free Version 7

AVG Free version 7 is now available for download from HERE

and here
Downloaded and installed it last night, a lot better than the old version and you can use the scheduler to change when it scans and checks for downloads now so you can pick the times that suit you.

The new version is just a straight forward download and install this time, no serial numbers sent by email or registration required. AVG has yet to let me down on any of the PC's that I have installed it on and that includes one that was prone to virus infestation due to a click happy user :erm:

Really? I never really looked in the settings too deeply on the older version but I can't remember being able to specify a fixed time to check for updates  I know you could adjust the time it scanned the pc but didn't realise you could change the update time.

It's in Control Centre -> Update Manager - I've just put v7 on so I can't tell, you can do it though.

v7 is ace, works in t-bird...

the new version is not as fast as the old, but maybe that is because it does a more thorough scan.

Hello again,

I had a look at the new support forum for AVG version 7 free and noticed that quite a few people with ZoneAlarm have been having problems with AVG e-mail scanner.

I have ZoneAlarm free and wondered if anyone else here has had any problems with AVG 7 free/ZoneAlarm free and AVG e-mail scanning.

I am eager to try AVG 7 but wanted to check re any problems experienced beforehand.

Thanks

Do you still have version 6 on your pc? If so just un-install version 7 and load version 6.

You alway could with version 6, but the check would only happen if the PC was online at the time set in options. However, in version 7, if the PC is not switched on at the specified time, the check would occur the next time the PC was started. This goes for the schelduled scan as well. :tu:

No problem here (well, one problem sorted) With the default setup email failed.
My firewall was blocking the communication between the email client and AVG - after respecifying firewall rules, A-OK

You are advised to disable mail safe in Zone Alarm to avoid conflicts.

Support for AVG 6 stops on December 31st 2004 which is why AVG 7 Free has replaced it.

AVG 7 free no longer allows installation on Windows Server 2003, I had to purchase the File Server version. Excellent value with a 2 year 5 user licence costing just £50, btw I use Outpost Professional firewall with it.

Re: AVG free Version 7

Just noticed one problem. With the default installation, Eudora's incoming emails were not being scanned. However after reinstalling using the advanced setup option and selecting the "personal email scanner" plug in as well as the auto matically installed "Eudora" plugin, email is now both scanned and certified by AVG.

With regard to switching off Zone Alarm Pro mail safe, with Eudora at least, some messages from eicar (virus test) were not intercepted as they were downloaded while ZAP mail safe was on. However with ZAP mail safe disabled, all the test messages were intercepted. One thing to note however, even when messages were downloaded with ZAP mailsafe on, AVG did identify the messages when I attempted to open them within eudora.

ZAP mailsafe has now been disabled.

Did you run the AVG scan first before removing it? It act's in a pro-active way 24 hours a day and then scans every 24 hours at the time you tell it to. Seems a bit harsh removing it unless you allowed it to scan first and it found nothing. Any clues as to what virus it found and where it was hiding?

Yes - it scan's every night when I went to bed as well. It didn't find anything, I didn't note down what they were as I uninstalled it at that point as it wasn't doing it's job.

Unfortunately no anti virus is 100% accurate and find 100% of viri, there have been times when scanners such as avg have found virus files where norton has missed it. Use whichever you are more confident in or more comfortable with :)

Agreed, the recent Bagle virus recently slipped past NAV on my work PC, it was only my suspition that made me submit it to Symantec who confirmed my suspitions. A quick manual update soon fixed NAV. By the time I got home my AVG6 was updated and was able to spot the virus. I think a lot of it is in timing. I tend to out of habbit check my email at home around 6-7 pm, which is why AVG is set to update arounf 5 pm.

AVG??? Wouldnt trust it, I constantly got warnings of Virus attacks, mostly trojans that it could do nothing with, half the time the files it said were infected didnt even exist. Nothing ever appeared in the virus Vault and when I installed Nortons again I was absolutely riddled with damned viri.

Sorry but its not worth the risk, I value my data. £30 for NAV is better than data recovery and lost data anytime.

How do you know? You can't exactly check with your virus scanner can you ;) If after 3 months your system is still free from cookies, tracking data etc then I shall green rep you myself :D
When was the last time you scanned your system for spyware, viri, malware etc?

Well, I just did a scan with Spybot and it only found 4 things (which are the usual ones I find even from using it in a week)

The ones it found were:

"Possible" Extenstion High-Jack

Which I have now just fixed :)

Might want to download and run adaware too, it seems to pick things up that spybot misses and visa versa. Not bad though ;)

I watch what I do, I don't go to websites that I don't know about, I don't accept files that I havn't been told about (like in emails), I don't accept files off messenger unless I know the person is trust worthly (which can take me up to a year).

I always check for updates aswell, but since I'm on 2000 it's very rare that any pop up :)

I'll download and run Ad-Aware actually, might do a virus scan on F-Prot aswell just to make sure (since I havn't done a virus scan in 3 months).

I'll be totally amazed if nothing is found, at least I know the way I work and keep my computer secure actually works :D

Also try....

Spywareblaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Helps "immunise" your PC against spy-/ad-ware in the 1st place.

But it's still *really* worth using an AV prog too Scott.

Spywareblaster is an excellent tool and if you load it on a clean install it can dramatically reduce the ammount of rubbish you have to keep cleaning out :)

I don't like AV software, it uses far too much I/O activity up and causes CPDN to slow down, which I want the max speed out of it. It also slows down the speed of my HDD's as the buffer is being used all the time (which can be bad in games).

You don't have to have it running all the time (e.g. "Auto Protect" in Norton).

You can just do manual scans of things you download etc., & do full weekly scans.

No need for it to hog everything.

Or, at least do an online scan regularly.

It may slow your pc down a little bit but a virus will slow it down even more ;) Just install one and do a manual scan once a week like Matt said, at least that way we'll stop moaning at you for not running one at all :p: Sometimes it's better to be careful and have the tools to hand than to get caught out and have no way of getting access to the help you need :)

So installing some protective software and manually running it when you want to is increasing your start up menu how? You can choose what software loads at start up and what doesn't ;)

Can you not remove un-necessary entries or idy up the menu by creating folders to group different tools/ software into? I took a badly cluttered menu on a mates pc from 3 screen lengths to 10 folders in about 5 mins ;)
I used to have a piece of software that allowed you to control the start up programmes, This is one and it's 2000 compatible too :p:

Mine is working fine, it has just sucked netsky straight from an e-mail into the virus vault. I didn't even know until I just checked it was working.

That must be a very boring interent experiance. Not surfing the web for new sites.....going to a site that may actually have questionable content but still finding one of those little gems that make the net worthwhile. Talking to someone over MSN and them giving you a funny vid or picture....I take it you vet people with some kind of questionaire after the year is up :p:

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring

Maybe you should just read magazines....no risk in that ;)

Why do you want to do that???
it only takes a few seconds and it is an added security measure to help protect you.

Anyway I cannot find a setting for that but if I find one I will let you know.

The PC I want to disable it on is K6-233MHz, so it adds to an already very slow boot-up time. Therefore anything that doesn't need to be on during boot-up, I'd prefer to turn off.

Also in AVG 6 it could be turned off so why isn't there an option in the 'improved' version to do it? Surely the user should be in control of the level of protection!

Re: AVG free Version 7

I understand your point about the speed of the system, but they have tried to address the situation that a very high percentage of users set up and forget the AV software.
One of the major problems with internet users is that they get some AV software and promptly think that they are protected 'for life' with what is installed, so the AV companies are starting to take users out of the loop with updates and scans. This hopefully will start to impact on the volume of virus that are still in the 'wild' after many months or years, when they should have been killed of in a few weeks.
I agree that there should be some way for 'advanced' users to configure the setup to their own requirements, but with free stuff you take what you get.

I always recommend uninstalling, reboot, download newest version and reinstall into a brand new location when things like this happens. You can spend all night trying to resolve the problem or you can try a clean install that will take 5 mins and may resolve the problem as well as giving you the most up to date files.

You will find that it is because NTL are having probs with e-mail again (surprise surprise) AVG seems to keep on looking for files that are not delivered before the time-out.
I just ignore it.

I'd ditch it. I used to use AVG but now I use Avast, I think it's better tbh.
