email problems started today
Hey everyone, not sure if this is the correct place to put this thread
I am having problems today with my email. This is a strange one actually. My thunderbird program, says that I have "no new messages on the server" and it looks as if it has contacted the server and found no new messages, so I tried to send a test email from gmail, which did arrive. So it looks like I only have a problem sending messages now. I noticed this when I was trying to send an email this morning, and it took forever to try to connect to smtp.ntlworld.com, then I had a pop up asking me to input my password, which I found strange, thing is when i put my password in, then I get a sending of messaage failed. please verify that your mail & newsgroups account settings are correct and try again. can someone tell me what is going on? is there maintenance going on? is there a problem with the server or is my program at fault, which I think I can rule out. ik |
Re: email problems started today
Uh oh...
Not the mail servers falling over (again)? |
Re: email problems started today
According to the Service Status page, there is an on-going problem with one of the e-mail servers
|
Re: email problems started today
I too can't send email. I just get a constant time-out error. :(

Can't send - SMTP password required
Just tried to send mail and was asked for password - windows pops up titled "Mail Server Password Required: Enter your password for robert on smtp.ntlworld.com"
This is not only a new one on me, it is a new one on a machine I use every day. Something wrong at the ntl-end? I thought I saw somewhere in this forum a link to a page with the Broadband status, but I can't find it on the knowledgebase. Anyone care to give me a hint? Thanks Robert |
Re: Can't send - SMTP password required
Ok, found the Robin Walker page and found the status page from there.
There is a service outage affecting sending e-mails, reported today at 16:00 Not me then Robert |
Re: Can't send - SMTP password required
There's also a link to the status page near the bottom of this page (one for NTL, one for Telewest)

Yeah, the email is playing up again  I'm glad I gave up on ntl's email service ages ago. Quote:

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
im not having problems sending e-mail but I am having problems receiving it! :(
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
I can receive email OK, but I havent been able to send any since yesterday.
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
I can receive emails ok, not a problem, but I am still not able to send any emails, out, it asks for my password, and failing to connect with the smtp,
thats been 4 days now for me I know the server status page does say other wise server status page as of 11 Nov 2004 08:00:00 http://www.geocities.com/ikthius/ssp.jpg ik |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
....same here, still can't send any mail. Just about had it with NTL.
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
There are some problems atm, and they are on the case.
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
one interesting side effect of this is that the re-direction from my ntl address that receives the most spam, to my hotmail addy, which filters it, has not been working. I had 189 spam messages in the inbox yesterday  - shows how well the spam filter on hotmail works, I suppose. ;)
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
I just sent an email with Outlook Express and it worked OK (I tired it last night and it didn't work though), it looks like Thunderbird isn't working properly for some reason.
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
...damn looks like im going to have to go back to the dreadful Outlook Express.
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
damn......thats weird, only Outlook Express will send mail, no other email client will work, i just tried using Mozilla Mail that didnt work either.
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
go into thunderbird...
go to tools > account settings > outgoing server (smtp settings) remove the username in there if there is one and untick username and password you should then be able to send mail ok hope this helps thunderbird automatically ticks username and password as default it appears even though there is no username in there and something that has happened while upgrading the ntl smtp servers has caused anyone with these settings ticked to fail :S |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Thanks, that worked !!!!!!!!
How did that setting change? I haven't made any changes to Thunderbird - very weird. |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
its not you, ntl have changed the outgoing smtp server to esmtp, which i believe they were not using before (correct me if i am wrong) you have always had it ticked and it has just accepted a blank username, however the new server software that they are using does not accept this and will then force you to enter a username and password which the server is not using and will ultimately refuse.
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
why does the new server not want a username, I take it they know who we are from the IP address and phone line, instead of just a username?!
it takes a wee bit longer to send than last week, is this due to the upgrade? ik |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
the old server did not want a username either just like this one as you are allowed to send an email via it as long as you are on an ntl ip range otherwise it will not allow you to send anything, the previous smtp server ignored the fact that there was an empty username, whereas this one does not and you need to untick it :s
as for the server upgrades i know there is a lot of testing being carried out for a couple of new features to be released soon which will please some of you ;) this could be causing it to run slower than normal |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Maybe they should divert some of their testing resources to fixing current problems? I have been having problems receiving emails for 5 days now - some arrive, others do not. NTL assure us that they will all arrive once the problem is resolved, woopy doo, it would have been quicker for the sender to use a carrier pigeon. And I can't send emails by SMTP, just via webmail (which is subject to frequent 504 timeout errors).
Grrr. |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
That worked a treat. Thankyou so much

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
the testing is important, and integral to making the platform more stable ultimately with the introduction of the new features
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
I'll believe it when I see it, if I live that long.
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
lol maybe ;) who knows.. i guess only time shall tell
|
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Cheers nostra
worked for me too. Crypto :D |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Hello,
I just managed to d/load my email - but it looks like it has gone down again in the last 10 mins... Anybody else having problems? Lee PS - Sorry admin for posting a duplicate link! |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Still no outgoing email via Outlook. Service just times out. Ntl's Server Status page said there was a problem on the 9th Nov 16.00. 3 days on still not working. Is there a fix or does anyone know when NTL are likely to solve the problem?
Cheers |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
I can't send email from Outlook to NTL either although I do have a simple solution ...
Change the outgoing SMTP server to "mail.tesco.net" and unclick the requires authentication checkbox |

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
I have phoned NTL - there is an ongoing problem with outgoing outboud email. You should be able to access your mail @ webmail.ntlworld.com - spooky though - that actaully works - which surprised me!
Also - they are in the middle of a major upgrade - which should be finished on the 18th. (Don't think that upgrade is affect the current mail issue though). Does that tesco smtp thing work then? How? I thought you would need to have some sort of authentication? *Edit* - Just changed my smtp address to mail.tecso.net - still not sending! :Yikes: |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
even the webmail isn't coping very well getting a lot of unable to connect to the message store on there which is a generic webmail busy / failing message
and i cant see why you should be able to access smtp.tesco.net as this is for tesco.net customers and the ntl ip range should not be allowed to use it, aless tesco.net allows ntlworld.com ip ranges. never tried so not sure, but shouldnt be?!?! |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
220 ESMTP server ready
250 dircache03-winn.mailhost.ntl.com 553 Authentication is required to send mail as <test@tesco.net> Hmm looks like authentication is required on tesco's smtp server. However, it is accessable from ntlworld ip ranges... probably because tesco.net is run by ntl ;) |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Yes once again no e-mail service. Even web mail hopeless. We will just have to be patient and hope the service will be up running again soon.
;) |

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
The Tesco bit works for me with no authentication. I was surprised when I did it a couple of days ago that it worked and it still does
lsainsbury - make sure you have spelt Tesco correctly! NTL - don't you just love'em |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Yes, stmp.tesco.net works for me too. Nice fix. Thanks guys. Don't you just luv ntl customer service. Post a message saying they have a problem & think they've done their bit !!!

so they are coming... just slowly |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Every time I try to log in to my email it says password not valid,
has this happened to anyone else? Gaz. |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Not sure, but webmail is down again which is usual indicative of a more general problem

am having problems with webmail
but pop3 server seems to be working fine! |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
I also haven't been able to have e-mails forwarded and deleted from the server, having set up a rule for both my ntl mail accounts via webmail.
I wondered why my yahoo account was quiet, and logged in to webmail to see hundreds of mails just sat there  Trying to access webmail tonight is a waste of time, it just times out, the useless piece of poo that it is :td: I hope they get it fixed soon, as this is a nightmare, and I think once it's back to some kind of 'normality' I'll change every record of ntl mail to yahoo, as at least that is reliable and spam free... Edit to add: Quote:

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Anyone know if NTL: Business's service is any more reliable than NTL: Home's? They offer a 750k broadband package for the same price (£24.99 ) but with a service guarantee - six hour fix or compo I believe. I'm thinking of switching (cos too much hassle to get a BT line back in, though believe me I'm tempted). The compo element suggests to me NTL: Business servers may be more robust and/or the engineers more incentivised!

Nope. I'm just a humble freelance. I think I can see where you're going. It's going to be £24.99 plus VAT isn't it?!

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Ok, now I have been very patient for the past week waiting for today the promised day when the e-mail service etc is to be restored.
Trying to access mail via Outlook Express, yes and settings checked but server refusing me access to receive or send. Even web mail as dead as the dodo. So NTL techies what is going on? When can we expect normality to be restored? :erm: |

I used to be with Powergen ISP (which was then taken over by Breathe) but I still managed to send and receive my e-mail when I switched to AOL. But when I went to Tesco I could only receive, not send. I didn't want to use Tesco's webmail or change my existing PGen address so I spent hours on Google looking for a solution to the dreaded "Error Number: 0x800ccc0e" messages. I'm just annoyed that Tesco don't seem to have some relevant FAQs, just a helpline where I couldn't speak to a real person after holding for 35 minutes. Once again, many thanks. Gerry |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
ohhh god...here we go again - unable to connect and download email to Outlook but webmail is fine (but slow)....
I'm getting really fed-up with this now..... :disturbd: :disturbd: |
Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Anyone having issues with messages failing to arrive in their inbox? Someone who emails frequently is insistent she has sent mails which haven't arrived. But I still get mail from her. Yesterday she sent two mails a couple of mins apart but only one arrived. She's using BTconnect, I'm using NTLworld. Could messages be being blocked by NTL's new spam blocker?
Andy PS. For those familiar with my previous posts, the lost mails aren't in my spam folder this time! |

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*
Beware. Turns out I'd been blacklisted by something called SORBS (Spam & Open Relay Blocking System) purely, it seems, because I have, in common with all other cable users, a dynamic IP address. I've contacted SORBS to request delisting but spotted an article on the internet which suggests they may not be that co-operative. Personally I'm not sure that this kind of vigilantism is the right way to combat spam.
Incidentally, thumbs up to NTL Tech Support who provided some good and prompt advice. If other NTL users suffer similar problems let's hope the company jumps on SORBS from a great height. Cheers |
