email problems started today

Hey everyone, not sure if this is the correct place to put this thread

I am having problems today with my email.
This is a strange one actually.

My thunderbird program, says that I have "no new messages on the server" and it looks as if it has contacted the server and found no new messages, so I tried to send a test email from gmail, which did arrive. So it looks like I only have a problem sending messages now.

I noticed this when I was trying to send an email this morning, and it took forever to try to connect to smtp.ntlworld.com, then I had a pop up asking me to input my password, which I found strange, thing is when i put my password in, then I get a sending of messaage failed.
please verify that your mail & newsgroups account settings are correct and try again.

can someone tell me what is going on? is there maintenance going on? is there a problem with the server or is my program at fault, which I think I can rule out.

ik

According to the Service Status page, there is an on-going problem with one of the e-mail servers

Can't send - SMTP password required

Just tried to send mail and was asked for password - windows pops up titled "Mail Server Password Required: Enter your password for robert on smtp.ntlworld.com"

This is not only a new one on me, it is a new one on a machine I use every day. Something wrong at the ntl-end?

I thought I saw somewhere in this forum a link to a page with the Broadband status, but I can't find it on the knowledgebase. Anyone care to give me a hint?

Thanks

Robert

Ok, found the Robin Walker page and found the status page from there.

There is a service outage affecting sending e-mails, reported today at 16:00

Not me then

Yeah, the email is playing up again

I'm glad I gave up on ntl's email service ages ago.

one interesting side effect of this is that the re-direction from my ntl address that receives the most spam, to my hotmail addy, which filters it, has not been working. I had 189 spam messages in the inbox yesterday  - shows how well the spam filter on hotmail works, I suppose. ;)

go into thunderbird...

go to tools > account settings > outgoing server (smtp settings)

remove the username in there if there is one and untick username and password

you should then be able to send mail ok

hope this helps

thunderbird automatically ticks username and password as default it appears even though there is no username in there and something that has happened while upgrading the ntl smtp servers has caused anyone with these settings ticked to fail :S

efossa 11-11-2004 12:57

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*

Thanks, that worked !!!!!!!!

How did that setting change? I haven't made any changes to Thunderbird - very weird.

nostra 11-11-2004 13:01

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*

its not you, ntl have changed the outgoing smtp server to esmtp, which i believe they were not using before (correct me if i am wrong) you have always had it ticked and it has just accepted a blank username, however the new server software that they are using does not accept this and will then force you to enter a username and password which the server is not using and will ultimately refuse.

ikthius 11-11-2004 14:59

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*

why does the new server not want a username, I take it they know who we are from the IP address and phone line, instead of just a username?!

it takes a wee bit longer to send than last week, is this due to the upgrade?

ik

nostra 11-11-2004 15:01

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*

the old server did not want a username either just like this one as you are allowed to send an email via it as long as you are on an ntl ip range otherwise it will not allow you to send anything, the previous smtp server ignored the fact that there was an empty username, whereas this one does not and you need to untick it :s

as for the server upgrades i know there is a lot of testing being carried out for a couple of new features to be released soon which will please some of you ;) this could be causing it to run slower than normal

Toreador 11-11-2004 15:25

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*

Maybe they should divert some of their testing resources to fixing current problems? I have been having problems receiving emails for 5 days now - some arrive, others do not. NTL assure us that they will all arrive once the problem is resolved, woopy doo, it would have been quicker for the sender to use a carrier pigeon. And I can't send emails by SMTP, just via webmail (which is subject to frequent 504 timeout errors).
Grrr.

I have phoned NTL - there is an ongoing problem with outgoing outboud email. You should be able to access your mail @ webmail.ntlworld.com - spooky though - that actaully works - which surprised me!

Also - they are in the middle of a major upgrade - which should be finished on the 18th. (Don't think that upgrade is affect the current mail issue though).

Does that tesco smtp thing work then? How? I thought you would need to have some sort of authentication?

*Edit* - Just changed my smtp address to mail.tecso.net - still not sending! :Yikes:

Re: [Merged] EMail Problems *Again*

even the webmail isn't coping very well getting a lot of unable to connect to the message store on there which is a generic webmail busy / failing message

and i cant see why you should be able to access smtp.tesco.net as this is for tesco.net customers and the ntl ip range should not be allowed to use it, aless tesco.net allows ntlworld.com ip ranges.

never tried so not sure, but shouldnt be?!?!

220 ESMTP server ready
250 dircache03-winn.mailhost.ntl.com
553 Authentication is required to send mail as <test@tesco.net>

Hmm looks like authentication is required on tesco's smtp server. However, it is accessable from ntlworld ip ranges... probably because tesco.net is run by ntl ;)

I hope they get it fixed soon, as this is a nightmare, and I think once it's back to some kind of 'normality' I'll change every record of ntl mail to yahoo, as at least that is reliable and spam free...

Anyone know if NTL: Business's service is any more reliable than NTL: Home's? They offer a 750k broadband package for the same price (£24.99 ) but with a service guarantee - six hour fix or compo I believe. I'm thinking of switching (cos too much hassle to get a BT line back in, though believe me I'm tempted). The compo element suggests to me NTL: Business servers may be more robust and/or the engineers more incentivised!

Fortune smiles on you. We cannot access our e-mail at all for over a week now, neither can we access web mail and neither can we get into our account. So I suppose I'll have to call CS this morning to get assistance though I'm not excited by the thought.

Many thanks to pad for suggesting changing the outgoing SMTP server to mail.tesco.net - solved a problem that's been bugging me since I switched to Tesco Broadband !

I used to be with Powergen ISP (which was then taken over by Breathe) but I still managed to send and receive my e-mail when I switched to AOL. But when I went to Tesco I could only receive, not send. I didn't want to use Tesco's webmail or change my existing PGen address so I spent hours on Google looking for a solution to the dreaded "Error Number: 0x800ccc0e" messages.

I'm just annoyed that Tesco don't seem to have some relevant FAQs, just a helpline where I couldn't speak to a real person after holding for 35 minutes.

Once again, many thanks.

Gerry

Also had a response this moring from the postmaster at one address I sent to with a group mailing yesterday, saying delivery to other recipients (with a variety of ISPs) had been delayed. Beware. Turns out I'd been blacklisted by something called SORBS (Spam & Open Relay Blocking System) purely, it seems, because I have, in common with all other cable users, a dynamic IP address. I've contacted SORBS to request delisting but spotted an article on the internet which suggests they may not be that co-operative. Personally I'm not sure that this kind of vigilantism is the right way to combat spam.

Incidentally, thumbs up to NTL Tech Support who provided some good and prompt advice. If other NTL users suffer similar problems let's hope the company jumps on SORBS from a great height.

the reason some mails get through and others don't is beacuse when someone sends a message it will routed through one of many servers. it only takes one or two of these servers to be blacklisted to cause this type of problem. If they were all blacklisted then no mails would get through.

can you post the exact returned mail message minus the email addy's?

Cheers - that's what NTL Tech Support said today. The problem is that I'm not getting messages returned (and as far as I'm aware neither are the people whose messages are failing to reach me). So nobody knows what's getting through and what's not.
