Unable to Visit Websites
Hi.
Not sure if this goes here. If it is the wrong place, then I appologise. I am on NTL Freedom on normal dileup. using XP Home Edition 10 days ago a website hosting company change from one server to another and since then I have not been able to visit any website hosted on their server or check any email. One of the websites is www.laserservices.co.uk . The old DNS was 213.249.249.148 The new one is 83.166.160.60 A freind of mine use NTL cable and she can get the pages ok. Has anyone got any ideas as to why this could be happening. Regards. Jim |
Re: Unable to Visit Websites
go to a dos window (start-->run--> "cmd"--> enter) and type "ipconfig /flushdns"
you could also try purging your browser cache... but the first thing I suggested should do the trick :welcome: by the way hmmm .. looking at this: http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/lookup...s.co.uk&type=A it seems whoever changed the DNS record has made an error somewhere along the line, my guess is that "ns2.blueboxtechnology.com" is the only nameserver responding to requests... but doesn't have the record, whereas "ns1.blueboxtechnology.com" probably is set up correctly but doesn't seem to be responding to requests |
Re: Unable to Visit Websites
in fact both of those nameservers are reporting that there isn't an "A" record.. which is pretty terminal as far as DNS resolution goes. You might find that your ISP DNS server has cached the wrong address, but your friends ISP has cached the correct one.

Re: Unable to Visit Websites
Hi. Thanks for the response.
I have done as you said from the CMD and still the same. I have forwarded the information on to Blueboxtechnology for them to sort it. However, if I log on with another ISP instead of NTL Dialup, I can get all the sites, very strange. |
Re: Unable to Visit Websites
I am using NTL:Freedom and i am getting the same problem. Some days I am able to access websites and other days I am not. I have cleared my cache and everything and the same problem.
Grr... I haven't much faith in ntl to sort this problem out so I guess a new supplier it has to be. |
Re: Unable to Visit Websites
Hi.
I have been talking to technical support, but have not been able to solve it. However I have come across something that may be relevant to the problem. Over the last couple of days, I have been able to get the pages, at times. I can log on in the morning and visit the page, I can then close the dialup connection, reboot the pc, logon again, only to find I can't get the pages. Thinking this was strange, when I was connected and could get the pages, I opened the dos prompt and typed, ipconfig /all , I wrote down the ip address and the dns addresses. Now, when I was connected and couldn't get the page I did the same thing and again wrote down the numbers. Straight away I spotted something................ When the ipconfig /all showed my ip as 82.7.136. ??? and dns 194.168.4.100, I could get the web pages, but when the command gave me the ip as 217.137.150.???. I couldn't get the pages. How is it I get 2 different ip addresses when connecting with ntlfreedom? would appreciate any help. Quote:

Re: Unable to Visit Websites
Hello there,
I've just noticed this problem last week when I was unable to connect to a friends game server while others had no problems joining at all. I then ran a tracert and pings and saw nothing but "Request Timed Out". I also found with the tracerts, that it didn't show any routes through NTL. I therefore came across this post and tried to get to the website www.laserservices.co.uk and also had no luck viewing it where other people I know were able to. I flushed the dns as well as clearing all the cache without any luck to solving this problem. I'm also on NTL:Freedom with the ip range of 217.137.xx.xx and I've been unable to view these sites or connect to a friends game server. I just then connect to NTL:Freedom a little while ago and found I could connect to the friends server and view the site mentioned above as well. I thought everything was fixed until I re-connected and found I was unable to view the site again. A Friend sent me my previous IP address which turned out to be 213.104.xx.xx. I can only guess something is not right with the 217.137 subnet and this is becoming a new problem for me and I still have few months til activation of broadband. Any planned fixes or are we to suffer until it's stumbled upon by many other users? Thanks, Daniel |

edit: you may want to try specifying a different proxy first in case it a cache issue. |
Re: Unable to Visit Websites
Could somebody try this site for me as members in a group I belong to say there is no problem with access but all I get is:

Thank you for trying it and hopefully a few more might try it. I have a feeling it might be NTL that is blocked from that site. Am going to try my ukonline dial up to see if that works. |
Re: Unable to Visit Websites
"you are also blocked
go figure" :erm: |
Re: Unable to Visit Websites
Well this is interesting.
I just disconnected my SACM and re-connected via dialup through ukonline. Bingo. No problem with access at all, apart from very slow due to dialup. Perhaps somebody with technical knowledge could have a look for me. |
Re: Unable to Visit Websites
blocked here as well
sounds like the site have blocked the ntl ip ranges will have a look in work tomorrow |

Re: Unable to Visit Websites
Interesting thread.
I also have problems connecting to some sites recently. These are hosted on 4surehosting on the server http://84.233.151.227 Using a different connection than ntlworld dial up, I can see a login page, but IE reports "server not found" from home. I did manage to connect by setting an external http proxy, but this is slow and does not help with my ftp connection. Specifying the IP address directly should eliminate any DNS issue. I finally got a call back from the Gaz in Wales, but the best suggestion was to try an alternative, pay as you go ISP ( go figure!!). My current DHCP address is also in the 217.137.14.*** subnet. |

it's not unknown for hosts to block the IP for a NTL proxy server, rendering all 'users' of that server impotent. However that is not relevant to ftp traffic, which is not cached  |

When i connect on 80.0.???.??? I can't get any pages at all. Sometimes I have to connect and disconnect 4 to 5 times before I get anywhere. I was emailing tech support about it, then they stopped replying to my mails. Not going to pay for phone calls when it appears to be their problem. |

I hope I havn't misunderstood, but, as you say, going for the direct IP for the site should eliminate DNS issues, FTP having problems as well, should eliminate it being a normal proxy server problem. So the only thing I can think of is IP range being blocked - you could try resetting your default 'transparent' proxy to an explicit one from another area & see if that works? http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...trancache.html :) |

Sorry, don't think I explained myself very well. It is by just connecting to NTL Freedom, this may help:- Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : ??? Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.25 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 80.0.???.??? DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 194.168.??? 194.168.???.??? --------------------- When I connect and can get websites, the isp I get is in the range:- 82.0.???.??? There are 2 others I get sometimes where I can't get certain websites, but above 2 are the main isp I am getting. Does that help? |
