Drivers and new build problems

Success !!!
I've booted up and Im in Windows.
I now have two CD's....one came with my graphics card and has the drivers for the Radeon 9800 Pro and then I got one with my monitor.
Do I need to install both ?

Thanks.

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

the monitor should be plug and play , but the graphics driver , i would look for the latest one off the internet :)

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

Before you rush ahead too much to sort drivers out, especially if using the new PC to connect to the internet, get your antivirus software loaded and updated. You could get a virus very quickly otherwise, especially if you dont have a good firewall.

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

The monitor disk may include "Color Profiles" (ICM or ICC extensions) (See color Management in the advanced settings) - I use them for my LCD (EIZO L985) and the clarity of the colors are great when using graphics packages.

Not connected to the net as yet. But after spending this much on my new PC, dont worry, Il be making sure I protect it with firewalls and anti virus galore.
Thankyou.

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

Have you installed the motherboard drivers, Halcyon ?

- if not, you'll need to do that before the graphics card drivers.

- it's sounding good, so far, though :tu:

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

Not installed any motherboard drivers as they are not needed it seems.
Put in my ASUS CD and it had drivers for RAID etc, but I dont need them.

I'm fairly sure you will need the AGP/GART drivers for the graphics card to work properly ;) :)

Am I right that theres no point installing my Keyboard "Intellitype 2.2" and Mouse drivers if they run perfectly fine without ?

Only if your mouse has extra buttons that are activated by the drivers--imo....

right well according to the ASUS set up menu there are these options for drivers:

- Intel Chipset Inf update program. (Used for plug n play INF support)
Do I need this ?

- Intel Application Accelerated Driver (If using Win XP this driver allows RAID 0 configuration for the SERIAL ATA channels).
Need this one ?

- Promise Fast track controller (This installs the Promise fast track 378 driver for Serial ATA and raid features.) *** I think I did this already by doing F6 at boot)

- USB 2.0 Driver (Got that already thruogh Win XP)

- SoundMax Audio Driver and Application. *** Installed this already ***

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

Just had another problem..... I knew it would start going wrong !!!

I have a Seagate Barracuda set up in SATA.
I partitioned my drive in the windows set up and now Im actually in Windows its not visible. I only see C: drive at the size of the partition I created.

Is it becuase it is not formatted and Windows only formatted the C: partition ?

aaargh - I'm going to bale on this one, - I reckon you do need the 'chipset inf update program' - but I'm not sure enough to recommend you to do it, sorry - I think the last time I had an intel chipset, it was a P200 mobo. :)

1 thing i will mention , it might be a bit late in this case though , remove your cable from your sacm/stb if you are on bb , if you dont then you run the very real risk of picking up a very nasty infection before you know it :disturbd:

Yes, install from Here, make sure you do this before installing the ATi driver.

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

Have a look in control panel > system > hardware > device settings. That will put a "?" against anything that windows XP hasn't got drivers for.

Sometimes though the basic XP installed drivers won't give you the full added functionality as if you use the manufacturer's own install routines. They certainly wont damage your PC if you try and install, just might add things that you don't really use.

Oh dear.
I've put the ATI drivers first.
How much of a mess am I in ?

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

No idea, but can you uninstall the ATI drivers before doing it the right way round. Alternatively try installing the intel drivers and then the ATI ones again. The software either will or won't let you do it.

Don't worry, install the Intel chipset drivers and then re-install the ATi driver. Otherwise you could end up with AGP Texturing disabled ;)

well, is the card properly shown as the primary display adapter in device manager? Is the agp showing as 8x in the advanced display properties?

If it works, as above, i would not change anything until you come across a specific issue, that may need a further look.

<edit> to point out that jamesclarke555 is the bloke who knows what he's on about, here, not me ;)

You ever played a game with AGP Texturing disabled? ;)

Halcyon, you can check the status of the above by typing dxdiag in the Run command box from the start menu and clicking the Display tab.

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

Thanks James and everyone else thats helping me out.
You guys are awesome.

Thats one problem out of 3 out the way.
Now theres just this thats bugging me:

1) I created 1 partition on my SATA drive when installing Win XP Pro.
Once in Windows I only see C: drive with the 55GB I allocated to it.
The rest of the drive of the 120GB is not seen.
Where has it got too ?

2) At boot up I get this error:
"No drive attached to FastTrak controller, The BIOS is not installed"
It then continues as normal with boot up.

Thankyou again :)

jamesclarke555 16-10-2004 21:54

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

1) Right click My Computer and select Manage, click on Disk Management. Can you see the 120GB partition in there?

2) You need to disable the onboard Promise controller if you're not using it.

Halcyon 16-10-2004 22:16

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

1 Attachment(s)
I've sorted out the error at boot up.
Thanks for that. Thats another worry out the way.
The partition thing is the only problem now.

Its a 120GB drive that I was hoping to split into two drives.
Its obviosuly done the first one but not the second.

See pic attached.

I see, o.k.

Right click the second partition and you should be able to format it :)

Re: Monitor and graphics card drivers

Sorry to keep on asking questions.
I promise Il try and hold back once this is sorted.

I've right clicked the unallocated section and ther eis not an option to format. It just says "New partition".

It needs to be NTFS like the other one.
Do I click new partition then or is that likely to make a 3rd ?

Thanks once again.

Yes, sorry I should have been more specific. Create the new partition in the unallocated space, and from there you can format it in NTFS.
