[Merged] ITV3.

I've read a number of threads that indicate that there isn't much room for new channels (I don't know how many channels NTL can do:confused: ). If ITV launches a new channel(see link below) would we get it, or would it simply not fit.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertain...io/3832477.stm

I'm new to posting threads, but this forum has always answered my questions before i've asked them.

Re: ITV3 - Would we get it?

Hey Chris,

Apparently it's going to "Evolve" from Granada plus, which probably means it'll replace it - meaning there's room on the network for it.

It'll be on freeview as well, so should be mixed in with the base pack. that's "Should" not "Will" - i'm no authorty!

EDIT: More info in this thread

Re: ITV3 - Would we get it?

The real question should be, would you want it? I find ITV2 to be the biggest waste of space in my channel line-up.

But to answer your question, I would imagine ITV3, because of being an ITV channel that will be heavily promoted on basic analogue terrestrial ITV1, will have to be carried on all digital platforms including NTL.

Will it be on FreeView though? I thought there was no more room on that platform...

I think most of the gaps have now been filled with the TopUp TV channels.

Re: ITV3 - Would we get it?

Thanks for the replys, so i guess it will probibly be on ntl and freeview then. As for whether it will be worth watching is another matter. I'm not even sure if i'll still have NTL at that point due the to the competition of freeview versus NTL's Base pack, after all the interactive is better and the some freeview now come with a digital recorder built in and better sound options.

anyway thanks.

the interactive is better how??....wow you have BBC NEWS 24...however you only have two screens...when ntl gets this ntl will have more...and with BBCi for such things as wimbledon with ntl: you have a choice of 5 courts.

When top-up TV started it completely screwed my box - and removed ALL my bbc channels....

It was sorted via a box software update a week later - but I hope the same thing doesn't happen if they add ITV3 to freeview.

Aah. 'Coming soon' then. :D I've had ntl digital for three years now, and BBCi has only just, in the last couple of weeks, begun to look as good on ntl as it always has on the other platforms. As for the other channels ... still no interactive at all on most of them.

So ntl is better because, for two weeks out of the entire year, you have a choice of three tennis courts to watch that you can't get with Freeview? Sorry, that just doesn't stack up at all. So far as I'm concerned, 'interactive' is the single most disappointing thing about the so-called digital revolution. But somehow I suspect I would be a lot less cynical about it if I had been using any digital platform other than ntl.

Exactly- now that Langley has CR3 we will now get equal treatment. The 'i' services are rolling out almost weekly!

The BBC has a public service obligation to treat all the delivery platforms equally, as far as possible. Remove that obligation and leave cold, hard business to decide what level of support to give the various platforms, and all of a sudden nobody's interested in NTL. I wonder why. Actually I know why, I met a couple of people from Endemol a year or so ago and got talking about interactive TV. Neither of them could utter the word 'liberate' without sneering.

Can Sam B or anyone from NTL confirm whether or not we will be receiving the new ITV3 channel that starts on November 1st please?

There are a number of threads discussing it but no official replies.

Any information greatly appreciated.TIA.

Yes I think it is coming to NTL on 1 NOV after the bill an ad for the new channel appeared and said if you miss the bill catch up on ITV 3 coming to ntl Ch118.

It makes sense as it will be next to ITV2.

For those of you with a freeview box apparently there will be a promo reel from monday on the itv3 channel...

[QUOTE=chrisinbolton]I've read a number of threads that indicate that there isn't much room for new channels

er . . . well . . . . .

these messages about NTL Cable being 'FULL' are TOTAL misinformation

There is loads and loads of space - in America 300/400 TV channels is commonplace on very similar kit - the PACE box has 1000 channels available . . . . . . . !

Its all a question of finance - the smaller channels don't get a look in because the revenue stream is wrong

HOWEVER ITV 3 is a sure_fire winner with its constantly revoloving 24/7 mix of Repeats->Drama and Detective progs

Have you looked at the EPG numbers ? - ITV1 is No 6 -> No 7 No 8 No 9 and No 10 are free for ITV 3 ITV 4 ITV 5 and ITV 6 :-)

[ No 11 is BBC 3 ]

Roll on 1st November . . . . .

RJ

Slightly off-topic, but doesn't this just speak volumes for how far NTL have not come in terms of Public Relations??
An advert was on ITV stating a channel number yet NTL still wouldn't confirm the channel was going to be available until today?
I can understand not giving confirmed dates about things like software updates or BBCi News Multiscreens(Please be soon :) ) but in this situation is NTL silence wrong?

It's no different. Even launching one channel is not trivial, and things can go wrong (remember SSX?). There would be call centre meltdown if a channel was announced for a particular date then, for whatever reason, it didn't happen.

Are you sure? Channel 7 is the Front Row Preview channel, 9 is Channel ntl (although I know this is being replaced by my ntl home on 119), and 10 is BBC News 24.

Plus, I'm sceptical of them even being able to fill the 3 channels they've got, let alone another 3 ;)

ITV3 will launch on Digital TV on Channel 8 (Bromley) or Channel 118 (Langley) on Monday 1st November at 9pm. It is not available on Analogue TV. It will be available to all Digital customers as it will be part of the Base Pack - another entertainment channel at no extra cost!

ITV3 is also launching on Telewest and Freeview on 1st November, however it is not launching on Sky until an unconfirmed date in 2005.

Channel content will include:

The best of ITV1 drama - Inspector Morse, Touch of Frost, Midsomer Murders, Cold Feet, Rosemary and Thyme

ITV1 'catch up' - catch ITV1 shows such as Parkinson and The Bill that you missed first time round

US Drama series - The Practice, LA Law, Hack, Karen Sisco

I suspect they have developed a seige mentality, with the business being in such a parlous state over the past few years. Once you get that culture of secrecy, keeping your head down and saying nothing, it can be difficult to break, even when sticking with it actually makes you look the idiot you are trying to avoid being.

If NTL's Press Office is not capable of wording an annoucement that takes account of that sort of eventuality, then none of them should be doing that job. In the world of PR, saying nothing is very rarely the right thing to do.

Which is gramatically correct, but as a value statement it's worth very little unless the channel has content you would actually want to watch. I find little enough to interest me on ITV1, virtually nothing on ITV2 and so by the law of diminishing returns I predict absolutely nothing of any consequence on ITV3.

I still prefer to draw attention to the fact that this channel is likely to be so chock-full of tripe that exclusivity is probably not something to shout about. Does anybody really expect $ky subscribers to come over to NTL in droves just for ITV3? ....

ntl will never make an exclusive statement which has to include freeview as it will possibly push ppl to freeview. to be honest the reason ntl aren't excited abt it and telling everyone is cos its not going to be a big crowd puller so to speak!!

TiVo can never get it right.

If they are early then people say "they jumped the gun".

If they wait until launch then people say "why can't TiVo add it early so we can setup the Season Passes".

In any case - the message on you TiVo is to say "ITV3 has been added to 118 on TiVo" - not that ITV3 is now on 118 on NTL.

118 is the confirmed number for original NTL.

Just seen the schedules for ITV3 in the Radio Times and it looks like it's going to be one of the better digital channels.

I guess it's all down to personal preference, some will prefer the kiddie/sci-fi fare on Sky One, others the laddish/yob violence on Bravo, or perhaps the supernatural goings on at Living TV. But the more discerning viewer may actually want to watch quality tv, and apart from maybe the terrestrial channels, Hallmark or the BBC digital channels, there's very little of that on TV today.

Can't comment on anywhere other than where I live and work. But I've certainly noticed an increase in the number of people getting ntl recently, several of them cancelling Sky in the process (no surprises there, I did). Could be many reasons for this, the local channel (best local news in the uk) is not on Sky (or even freeview) and is heavily advertised in the local press as being exclusive to ntl (or via analogue terrestrial, but very few can receive a half decent reception), not to mention local ads offering better deals than sky including the family pack for £19.50 with 12 months free phone line rental. etc. ITV3 is just another nail in Sky's coffin, but the death blow will be in 2005, and the introduction of VOD.

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

ntl sometimes have adverts in the radiotimes. for the family pack and free phone line.

and sometimes, ntl have an advert cover over our local newspaper, offering all the services and all the BOGOFs.
ntl do advertise, but not much. they add plenty of customers each quarter anyway, so the ads they do are enough (for now?)
:)

Just had a glimpse ... the line-up is vaguely reminiscent of G-Plus, except the programmes aren't nearly as old. There is very little 'ITV Drama' that interests me, but I might find the odd programme to watch on it.

As for the death of $ky ... I don't think ITV3 is a nail in anybody's coffin. It would have to have a schedule full of the kind of original programming that a large number of $ky's core sub base would actually want to watch before any significant numbers of people would switch (basically, it would have to be like Sky One, and that aint gonna happen).

And a death blow? I think not. Sky is here to stay, for the forseeable future anyway. VOD will be nice to have, but absolute must-have? And don't forget that half the UK is probably never even going to be able to get cable TV.

A commet by Proppin' over on digitalspy would suggest that it won't appear until the launch, or at least the day of the launch :)

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

Ok so would we see a place holder by now? Because every time I tap in 118 on my remote, it goes back to the channel I've just switched from which tells me IMO that 118 doesn't exist.

did they have a place holder for "smash hits" .... or for living tv +1?.............no.

I switched it on my freeview box at work today to watch the promo reel they were supposed to be running - I only got audio. I hope that's just them and not my box unable to pick it up properly.

I did a retune just in case.

Just checked now and have the transmission on Channel 8 on the Bromley platform here in cloudy downtown Manchester South.

Be interesting to see what it's like once the actual programmes start at 9pm tonight.

:)

Also here on Channel 118 for Swansea on the Langley network. Just showing a static ITV3 graphic right now.

and i think everyone will agree when i say , the programs for a launch night are very poor.

Graham F 01-11-2004 14:14

no ntlrocks i think they are good actually :)

Lew 01-11-2004 15:21

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

Same here. There's at least 2 programmes tonight that my parents will tune to ITV3 for.

ntlrocks 01-11-2004 15:34

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

yes, the programs are very good, but for a launch night? .... maybe a movie premier would have been a bit better

Graham F 01-11-2004 15:39

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

why would they want to broadcast something on opening night that will not normally be shown?!?!

seems pointless as there is enough intrest in the channel without having to do that

quadplay 01-11-2004 15:42

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

But they will be showing films (though not premieres)! Midnight tonight, for example, is "In the Heat of the Night", and at 9pm on Friday, there's "Father of the Bride".

Graham F 01-11-2004 15:47

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

yeh i knowthey will be showing films, but they aren't showing premiere's though so why would they on opening nite!

Seems Granada Plus has been given the bullet to make way for it on Sky.

Seems a very sudden shutdown.

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

Ok so I was checking a program for the missus just now and itv3 was listen on sky channel 119

I thought sky weren't getting it 'till next year?

Derek 01-11-2004 17:18

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

Looks like ITV have shut down G+ to take it's EPG position on Sky.

So much for the exclusively on Freeview then exclusively on Freeview and Digital Cable advertising. It was nice of them to give everyone some advance notice.

1701-e 01-11-2004 18:57

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

So thats why they stopped showing the trailer earlier on - it always referred to the freeview/cable exclusivity!

ITV3 is now showing a countdown as of 8pm.

Does anyone know what all this means for analogue cable viewers. I know we weren't originally meant to get ITV3, but might it be a direct replacement for Plus on the platform? And if so will it join the base pack?

So will a blank screen time-share with Men&Motors? That would be a waste of bandwidth (very NTL :D )

Re: [Merged] ITV3-coming to ntl??

Try channel 8 - depends on platform.
