Anyone seen this software from NASA

http://opensource.arc.nasa.gov/software.jsp?id=13
By all accounts with this free piece of software, you can view extremely high resolution photos (satellite and topographical) of almost anywhere in the world. I'm still downloading it, (250MB file) but someone on Neowin has managed to find some amazing shots of his home town that shows little things like swimming pools, cars etc
CPU intensive programme so if you haven't got a good spec I would avoid running it :)

So my 1.04 Ghz Athlon would be useless then?Anyway I have a feeling that I'm not up to dealing with it reading the very brief distribution notes. When they are that simple it means it's NOT that simple. ;)

It has to be said that the NASA servers do not seem to like the increased traffic lol You may need to be patient with the servers :(

This looks a very interesting piece of software..its just from what i read the servers are down for it. It just keeps attempting to connect every 2 mins for me but failing :/

edit: nevermind, got it working for looking at the us through usgs, pretty good, cant wait for landsat to work :)

Beh paused the download by accident, wont be done till about half 10, will report back then.

Will be annoyed indeed if I cannot connect to the server either....

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

This would be a lot smaller if they didn't package the .net distributable within the package (idiots!) why not just say you need this installed to run our software and give users a link!

i reckon you are right, i reckon it will be pretty damn cool when it works , i wonder if it will be any better in the morning before america wakes up , i say that because where i work , the system slows down around 12-00 pm which coincides with america waking up :disturbd:

So what / who have you been able to see so far, I had a dabble with something similar years ago but it was pants :(

Paul 09-10-2004 23:46

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

Well I kicked the download off a minute or two ago and 7% so far, chugging along at 184KB/sec atm.

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

We cant look at the uk atm, the landsat server is down, though you can have a look at america on the usgs server.

Have a look on the forums if you are interested, there are a few caches up of northern england.

Yeah it miles quicker just now... :)

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

I've tried it. Looks good, I can't zoom in though.

I'm just stuck floating 12, 000, 000 metres above the land.

Nevermind, just found it. You have you use the mouse wheel.

I zoom in, but the picture doesn't change. I just stays static green

Tricky 10-10-2004 12:42

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

It'll stay green until you turn on some of the other settings on the toolbar (try the USGA 1Mtr for max effect) - BTW only the states is done in this way (shame!!!) I wanted to see my house

punky 10-10-2004 12:48

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

But according to the site, the Landsat 7 takes great photos of things, thats what I had it on

Keeps saying can't connect to server, so I thought that was it. It doesn't say when it IS connected though...

That 1 metre thing worked nice though. I can see my parent's development in Florida really clearly. The house is a bit blurred though.

OK figured it out and finnaly found Tamworth. Only thing is it can't connect to the server, so I can't look at Tamworth from 25,000 metres :(

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

OK then just what system are you all running this software on?Will my Athlon 1.04 Ghz cope?Or is the novelty value likely to evaporate after about 5 minutes? :)

Incog.

Electrolyte01 10-10-2004 15:32

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

Well when looking at 10,000 metres my mouse keeps skipping along and I have a Duron 1.8GHZ, so I think your Athlon 1GHZ may struggle.

Maggy 10-10-2004 15:37

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

Well it doesn't really sound like my cup of tea anyway.I frankly can't think of anyone I want to spy on. :)

Thats because the landsat server is down, which holds the rest of the world! You can only view the us using the usgs server!

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

For those doing screen shots - there is an option to save a screen shot (1st menu) and it gives the option to save as a variety of type (bmp, jpg, pgn, etc) - Default is bmp which created a 4.5mb image for me!

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

Also for colour go into

tools>layer manager>Images>High res>

Once in there uncheck all except USGS urban area ortho-imagery

This gives a more detailed colour view, though seems to use up more cpu.

Heres a view of soldier pier in Chicago, just wanted to show it because its something I know from being there so can feel a bit more about the scale, for instance that boat is about 60m or so and the ferris wheel isn't a huge one.

Also I was thinking, they would only release something like this when they were much much much more advanced, makes you wonder what they can see...

Tricky 10-10-2004 21:15

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

Excellent Image Kliro, Apparently they are able to read the brand on a cigerette being smoked/held!!!

Now why cannot we have access to that and live feeds!?

Electrolyte01 10-10-2004 21:22

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

Live feeds would cost FAR too much money, as they would need to put hundreds of more satelites into space.

That is because it is urban imagery. Only cities are included. Bit annoying as it has Tampa and Orlando, but not my parents place in the middle which is shame. Have to put up with the blurry black and white view.

Doesn't have Miami though. Weird.

Top spot ... Downloading now... It's nearly maxing the bandwidth so they must have sort their servers?

That link is currently down - I have the files but I'm sure the site mentioned something about using version 1.2c (I've got the 1.2b to 1.2c patch but it errors on install - 1628 - Failed to Complete Installation)

EDIT : AddOn Packs seem to work though :)

i dont think everywhere is covered yet , didnt scott mention something about dl'ing the maps for the uk earlier :)

punky 15-10-2004 17:06

Re: Anyone seen this software from NASA

You can download the UK maps and cache them (see post #64).

The res is very low though for the UK. It is at best, A-Z standard. Nothing like the USGS stuff.

For what its worth you can get aerial pics of uk locations from multimap they're not bad, the high res ones a pay on demand but at least on the low ones you get an overall view of your area :)

I have looked at these and they are interesting but, in the case of my area, around 5 years out of date. Sometimes it takes you quite a while to figure out exactly what you are looking at as everything looks so different from above
