Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

As i have mentioned in this thread http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=14312, i have been getting on and off connectivity, as from 28th Sept, it has become alot worse.
I play Ultima Online and get conn loss every 2 mins, struggle to connect to IRC/ICQ (keep getting dis con from these). Quiet a few web pages dont load up 1st time(they just hang) so i have to refresh them. My activity light hardly flickers when trying to play game.
Ive rebooted modem(motorolla surfboard) repaired line, took off SP2, called C/S (its my computer, not us).
I have a 213 ip addy. I have an Asus A7N8X mobo,AMD XP Athlon 2500+ 1.83 Ghz 512 MB ram, Raedon 9800 AiW, i use Norton Firewall and have XP Pro/SP1.

There is a problem on scunthorpe UBR1 at the moment...

Apparently its just an Intermittant fault? didnt see anything about packet loss....

zally... PM me the mac address from your modem (on the sticker on the bottom), or your external ip address and i will check whether you are being affected by the current scunthorpe issues, or whether it is an individual issue.

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

I to have been getting an intermittent service from NTL in SCunthorpe - I use www.toast.net to check my throughput and it is averaging 438K on a 1.5m connection - although it has has moments of showing 1.3m throughput.

NTL tell me it is my modem - or my firewall - and even had the temerity to send me 3 e-mails today telling me that I have adware and a virus on my pc. PAH.

I ahve doubled checked with a different pc and a different modem (my motherss) in my house - andam gettingthe same results.

This has been going on for 3 bloody months now and they STILL expect me to pay £37.99 per month for what is a ****ing crap service.

I get more annoyed with these "put offs" from NTL than the bad service - wonder how everyone else feels about it?

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Wheeeeeeeeeeeee great fun aint it folks. I could be happily playing online now, but CAN'T

just sent this email to ntl via their web page ....

Quote:

well hello again ... remember me from about 3 months ago ?? Problems with broadband connection that is 5 mins on, 2 mins off (repeat endlessly ha ha). started Thursday 30/9/04 (but could have been earlier as I was working late for the previous 2 days) and is still with us,(I say us because I am not alone in scunthorpe with this problem). The last time it happened it wasn't resolved until about Tuesday of the following week. Needless to say I am not happy at the prospect of another long weekend of non-active internet. I personaly don't give a hoot about the 600 to 750 upgrade if this problem is going to keep reccuring .... I just want a constant 24/7 connection so I can enjoy what I pay for.
I also tried to ring CS twice last week to cancel my TV but was unable to get through (disconnected after being shunted about), so this happening aswell has made me a VERY unhappy chappy. Thankyou for taking time to read my second rant, but remember ... 3 strikes and you're out.
I also got a full 1 month refund last time I sent one, so give it a try ;)

Its been going on since Tuesday at the earliest this time - and they are refusing to acknowledge anything is wrong - I'll try your approach - if I can get on - thanks for the tip :)

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Just sent the following

Again - after 3 months of intermittent service I am back tyo square one. Not only am I getting a 5 min on 2 min off connection - when you do deign to give me internet servide the average throughput is 438K on a 1.5 m connection. NOt only that i am getting the most blatent run around from technical support - the last time an engineer was called out - he never even bothered to turn up. Did I get an apology - No - I wasted an entire Saturday waiting for him.

After being on hold for 53 mins I got a guy who told me - after REPEATEDLY telling him it was your end causing the problem that he would have to check my saystem out - how trhe HELL can you do that - then have the temerity to send me 3 e-mails blamming virii - firewalls and spyware when my PC was SWITCHED OFF at the time???????

See this? ----* ??????? Its the end of my tether with your so called internet and your "Customer support" The greatest example of an oxymoron I ever saw in my life

I ran out of characters before I finished :) :)

lmao :D it really does annoy me that they always try to put the blame on the users computer, whether it be a virus/firewall/driver issue .... whatever

my missus has been chaffing on about going back to BT for ages, but I keep fobbing her off .... I would hate to give in to her, but ..... :p:

Its 12:55 on 2nd October - no response from an engineer and now they finally admit theres a problem in the DN16 area - wonder if its going to be a permanant fix or a touch of spit and chewy gum that NTL are (in)famous for?

There were some issues affecting the Scunthorpe area as a whole that are now resolved.

I find it mildly insulting that we are famous for a 'touch of spit and chewy gum' solution to issues, thanks for that. The network is massive, some parts work properly all the time, some go wrong. Sometimes those faults are complicated and difficult to fix and restoring customers to a decent service while the faults are being worked on is the priority. We certainly don't mess with your service for the fun of it or leave it any longer than is necessary non-functional or degraded.

If you would prefer that a fault that may take weeks to fix properly due to interaction with equipment vendors, awaiting firmware updates, etc be left affecting you rather than a 'touch of spit and chewy gum' solution be done to at least get you your service back to scratch in meantime please do suggest this.

I know Scunthorpe has had more than its' fair share of issues. These are worked on as they arise, always with getting the customers the service they expect and demand back as soon as is practiceable.

Apologies if it hasn't always been to your expectations, we do our best :(

:tu: Yeah we know you lot do your best m8, and we appreciate it, although it may not look that way from the bitter and sarcastic posts in many of the threads < insert hand raised smiley here > :erm: You probably get as frustrated and disheartened as we do too. I think most of the frustration on this side of the fence is the difficulty encountered trying to get through on the phone lines, and the repetative basic solutions offered when (if) we do.
Sign of the times now though, everything is going the same way .... if you take your car in for a service it comes back with more scratches and dents than if you left it in Morrisons car park during a chav meet  :p: /joke/

Thanks for the info and fix anyway

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

I've been having this serious net loss prob for 2 weeks, shows itself up mostly when playing Medal of Honour, loses conn for 10 seconds at a time rougthly every 2-3 minutes. But as of saturday morning it has been perfectly ok. I rang CS last week and they said they are sending an engineer out on monday, so I will quiz him to find out what they ahve done as well as check out my modem etc.

Tech support is very much appreciated, and would be even more appreciated if someone could say what the overall actual problem is specifically so that if it happens again we can report this to CS. As it stands it seems to magically fix itself without anyone saying what has been done.

I don't know if this is already available somewhere, but wouldn't it be a good idea for NTL to maintain a webpage showing whatever countrywide network problems are currently known about and being worked on? That way you would at least know if it is worth trying to ring CS

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Please define fixed. Its 12.53 on 3rd October and my throughput is STILL only 119K. on my 1.5 (so called) connection- assuming I can GET online - If that is your definition "of fixed" - then I really stand by my previous comment. If you read my previous comments you will find I have been having these problems for well over 3 months - so yes, especially given your admission that Scunthorpe has had more than its fair share of problems I do expect a fully working solution. And no - I am not blaming you personally - it was a comment thrown at NTL in general

Ignition 03-10-2004 13:20

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

You have a clear local issue I'm afraid and possibly you personally, not related in any way to the main issue that affected the area as a whole.

How have you helped yourself, have you gone through the fault process? Confusing though it is faults of the kind you describe are highly unlikely to be due to issues with national network and far more likely to be very local indeed.

Hunkytim 03-10-2004 17:20

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

I understand your comments - but last time I got these issues I tried it with another modem (my mothers) - and another PC - and any combination of the above. I also totally upgraded my PC in the past few months (Including a full windows installation) so am confident it is not my PC or my network causing the problem - it HAS to be either - as you say - the local server or a problem with my connection to the server. If thats the case - and I don't deny the possibility - it still doesn't explain why an engineer failed to turn up when NTL said he / she would - nor does it explain why I didn't even get a phone call to apologise or explain that the engineer was unable to attend (Makes all the difference to me). It also doesn't explain why it miraculously cleared up. It certainly doesn't explain why I seem to get the problems on a weekend then clearing by Monday morning, but it does go a long way to explaining my frustrations and anger.

I have the pleasure of knowing a few NTL engineers in this area, and know they are mainly well qualified, knowledgable and hard working people, so again - my comments are directed at NTL in general ( Mainly customer service - who again seem to be constantly rushed off their feet, bles them) and in no way would I wish to reflect upon the skills and integrity of the engineers.

Bubo 04-10-2004 10:12

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Just had the engineer visit me 2 mins ago. He straight away said there are problems with the scunthorpe UBR router which they are investigating but as yet don't know what the full problem is. He said it was affecting 2 postcodes in scunthorpe but had escalated to the whole of scunthorpe recently. As of saturday morning it has been fine for me but he said the problem was still there in parts of scunthorpe so I must be one of the lucky ones to benefit from whatever jiggery pokery they have been trying. He put a gizmo on my cable and seemed to think there was no problem with signal levels etc or my pc. Shame these couldn't have been checked when the problem was actually there so I could totally rule out local cabling and/or my pc but it looks as though it is a scunthorpe ntl hardware problem. I told him its been going on since June and he said yeah they've known about it for a while.

Its starting to Get real annoying tbh - i sat on the phone for 45 mins to support, in the end I gave up as noone could be bothered to answer --or-- it was that busy with people calling about problems, i was wayyy back in the queue.

I know scuthorpe aint the best place in the world but we went for years without a problem then in the last few months we have had nothing but UBR's dying on us...

Noticed web browseing was sluggish when I got home from work tonight, thought uh-oh. Tried gaming and it was pretty much ok. Tried browsing again and its now back to having to click a dozen tmes on a link to get it to fetch the page. Given that an engineer came out to see me on Monday and found no problems my end, its a case of just hope they fix it before we eventually realise its not worth paying 25quid for + 10 quid phone line.

well i havent been on the net at home for a few days, but jesus it was totally dead last night.

had to refresh the page about 5 times just to get google to work.

rebooted the router and modem.
no difference.

hopefully if you are right a new ubr will sort everything out.

OH FFS, its started doing it in online games now. How do you go about cancelling just broadband till they fix it proper?

Mauldor 07-10-2004 13:57

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Well I took the plunge and waited the XX Number of hours to get through to support. Though first I called the Status line just to make sure. Anyhow, reported the fault, which they knew about - so with any luck they might well "fix" it again (is this the 5th or 6th time now?).

Which leads me onto another question, NTL have the status page and the telephone status line - my thought on this was quite simple, if there is a known fault in a area, then people can either check online (if they can get online) or at worst call the status line. The theory of this is less calls to Support to take up a persons time going through a problem when in fact it is known about.

Now this is definatly not the case is it...not once have I seen or heard of the current problems people have been having even though everybody and there dog knows about it. What I could not understand is I went through the entire fault diag on the phone and then to be told "oh we know there is a problem in Scunthorpe - we are working in it and Hope to fix it" - so why waste my time and his going through the obiuos checking of power levels, my pc connection and go d knows what else when he knew there was a outage effecting most of Scunthorpe? Sounds daft to me..

I too have been thinking about swapping over to ADSL for some time, the problem is for years Scunthorpe Cable modem to me knowledge was fine then we have one problem after another, a 56k Modem can work faster and better than what I have now. Of course swapping to ADSL might well make it all better but there is no Guarantee that similar problems wont happen on that also.

jarrvo 07-10-2004 14:46

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

same here im in 2 minds whether to switch to adsl.

the last 2/3 months in scunthorpe have been stop start... kinda put a stop to my online gaming at the minute.

if it is sorted soon think i will take the plunge and get adsl, only problem is im unlikely to get any other than 512kb.
so its a bit of a step down.

come on NTL :D

please get it sorted.

Hi all;) ...new to forums so hope this works.I also live in the DN16 area of Scunthorpe and have been having the same probs since way back also. For the second time this month after a repreive of about 1 month the same old timing out errors are back!!!
Have made several calls to customer support (who can see that this is happening) to be told today that the problem is not worth reporting as a fault:td: !!??..after months and months of frustratingly poor customer service i am now at the end of my tether and am looking into changing service providers.
I was thinking tho..isn't it about time we undervalued Scunthorpe customers should somehow get together with a petition or something to voice our dissatisfaction on the whole with NTSmell!!
Was also told today that Scunthorpe is a problem area but that there is little that can be done for us:shocked: (quote from Nick at CS).
What do you think guys??...perhaps they want a bunch of us to cancel so that they are no longer over-subscribed??!!

colwilson 07-10-2004 16:20

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

maybe that's what we need to do, all kind of gang up on them. Maybe if enough of us can get together and tell then fix it or loose us. How many would be enough to make a difference? £3000.0 0 or so per month
100- 120 users.

You what?!? Well if that *is* true then it explains why it is all being kept hush hush, cos if they genuinely can't solve this problem then its guaranteed customers will be leaving in their droves. Please can someone tell me this customer services chap was just simply trying to fob the guy off, rather than having actual true knowledge.

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

In DN16 myself, and what was a good service has gone downhill fast. When I first got BB, Tech supp was an 0800 number with a person on the line and the fault was fixed while I went for a walk, followed by a courtesy call to ask me if service was restored.

The upgrade to 750K has been pretty meaningless.

Let's hope that the report thet the UBR is to be replaced tonight are correct, dare I hold my breath??

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Just got off the phone to CS again...have sent trace routes from several sites and they have finally acknowledged that there is a fault.
They say they have recieved 32 calls concerning this fault and are now looking into it.
Iknow it is a complete pain in the ass phoning CS but the it seems the more calls they recieve the more serious they take it.

i'm in scunny too and it has been bad for a couple of days, they told me that there was a minor fault in the area!!!!!

minor fault ???? ....... oh stop it, your killing me :p: :p:

well its phone for me tomorrow ....... no matter how long I'm on hold .......

I bet BT are laughing their socks off at this mess, it would be interesting to know how many sign up enquiries they've had in the last 2 weeks :D

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

what number are you ringing to get through to CS?
i tried about 10 times last night... the phone would ring for 10 seconds then go dead?

i sent them an email from there site...

i feel adsl looming.

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Would it be possible if some Techie NTL person who by mere chance passes by this site to maybe, if possible explain what is going on, today is now Friday 10:30am and still I am struggling to get sites up...

Surely if its a faulty UBR you have spares somewhere you can replace it with?

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

It's 10.36, DN16, and so for this morning it has not been to bad, (That is compared to what we have been suffering). So just may be they are starting to sort it out:rolleyes: . Fingers, legs and arms crossed:D

It is flagged as an issue on the Service Status Page as of 22.51 last night

Southampton's been showing this status on the service page since 30th April, so I wouldn't get your hopes up!

Online gaming cuurently impossible as well as web. Its queer but this time last night web was just as bad as it is now bit gaming was perfectly ok. Still not convinced it isn't just a case of there being too many people trying to access too small a hub or whatever.

The cable modem support number is 0845 6500121, the recorded message there has acknowledged that there is a fault since last Saturday AFAIK. Couldn't be bothered to hold on to get through to someone. Perhaps need to ring the other CS number 150 and demand a refund

hmm think thats the number i dialled.

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Deadline Sunday Night/Monday morning - then if it aint fixed, Freedom2surf will get me call. Ive had enough of this, im pretty sure this is about the 5th or 6th time now its happened. I asked what the problem was the last few times it happened and got told its a UBR fault - if that was the case then surely a New or working UBR would have sorted it once and for all, surley each time a different UBR gets put in and then as if by magic its fixed but then later it goes down again?

I noticed there is a few areas which are effected, not just Scunthorpe - maybe the "Ubr is faulty" is just a excuse and the network on the whole is a bag of spanners? At least now it apears on the Status list - question is, do we get re-embursed for lack of connection for XX Days? Probably not as its a home service and if it breaks then its not there fault....

It would be nice if someone, somewhere could explain what is the problem (real reason) and what is been done - been kept in the dark and hoping it "might" be fixed soon is not good really - each day that passes means ADSL is looming closer for me personally...

Carth 08-10-2004 23:00

Go for a refund ... I got one last time, and I'm sure as he.ll gonna try for another

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

GRRRRRRRRR:mad: Saturday and still no fix..looks like another weekend without games:bigcry: Thanks for pointing out the issues in Southampton(very encouraging)
Yes i was give a free month too last time and have been promised a refund for duration of problem this time, but surely we are all entitled to this and yes you should all be given it.If you havn't asked then you should.
It hardly compensates for our lost gaming pleasure  but if they are willing to give it to the few then surely we are all entitled to it... so claim it;)
As for the real reason..it seems to me that we are all being told varying stories from NTL when they eventually admit that they are at fault..i guess we will never really know..but i would put money on it happening again and that it why i have started the ball rolling and cancelled my telephone service:waving: ..that way next time i will be prepared and can fix up my ADSL provider swiftly.

Can you do that? Cancel your phone but keep the cable modem?

doogandmissus 09-10-2004 10:39

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

For now thats just the telephone changed over to BT.....30 days notice...then a further 7 days for line to be tested for ADSL compatability and i'm away

2pm on Sturday - Modem lost all connections for half a hour then came back on - looks fine (fingers crossed) - guess they swapped out that UBR -- nice

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Don't think they've fixed it, slow downloads & same IP address ( this usually changes when they change hardware or resegment). Surfing seems better, but is that because not as many are on line?

nopcode 09-10-2004 18:20

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

it does seem half fixed to me, loads better. Had no connection at all between 1pm and 3 pm, but after that its looking good. D/L speed is halved but if thats just part of the fixing process I can handle it (as long as it picks up again soon)

Im just glad they recognised there was a problem, to see it on the server status page was nice, also saved me from getting the "you have spyware / virus on your pc " excuse from CS

lets hope its a full fix eh :)

bonzoe 09-10-2004 18:55

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Fingers crossed!

As you say, it seems to be half fixed, let's hope all OK next week.

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

Well tried a download and a upload + playing games online + browsing web sites (even chinese ones) and so forth - speed is full for me on all accounts, some web sites remember may be slower than others for downloads.

Long as I can transalte using Babel tha im more than happy for now, games seem ok and no drop outs of MSN + Skype ..

jarrvo 13-10-2004 15:17

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

well according to the status page it is now officially resolved.

i email ntl to ask what the official problem was.... they replied with an email that said nothing at all.

going to try some gaming tonight see how it is.

hmm.. as i posted, another duplicate message has appeared. but it says the 12th oct.

weird.

NTL have been aware of this outage/ degraded intermittent connection since September 15th 2004, lets face facts NTL Tech Support have the technical ability of Lemmings, level 2s are not much better your best course of action is to send a SIGNED FAX tocomplain in office Ours to 0115 8421613 explaining if they dont rectify this ongoing problem you are going to contact OFCOM to take the matter Further by signing the FAX it becomes a legal letter make sure you place your address and contact details all of them on the fax if within 2 weeks you dont get a satisfactory response you can then contact OFCOM and let them deal with it on your behalf.

Ask around on this site.... i help a lot of people in my spare time on here, and i am sure there are plenty of people who will say that i am good at my job, and have indeed resolved problems that others couldn't, but hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I just hope you didn't come here for help because you aren't likely to get it with an attitude like yours. In fact, why did you come to this site? surely an IT manager would realise that frontline call centre workers are not responsible for the management of an hfc network...? So the "lemmings" are telling you that there has been an issue with degraded service, but it is not the "lemmings" who go out and fix the issues- and there is no need for them to be given the technical details of what is going on. The network management team are the people who will sort out the problem, and rest assured that they are working to resolve the problem as sson as is humanly possible.

Okay enough is enough - Pop's no more of the lemming remarks please and keep this thread focused on the issue of this topic. Name calling is associated in school playgrounds not on this forum thank you.

Re: Bad connection in Scunthorpe (again)(long)

I wish to add the Monkeybreath has been a big help to me perosnally in the 5/6/7 times it is now the problem has came up - To save me starting threads, i posted him a PM to check if there was a problem known about - not the reason why there is a problem or how to fix it - but simply "is there a problem that you know of" - this saves loads of threads been made when in fact it might have been a simple Proxy problem and so forth. I have spoken to a few on support phone line who know what they are talking about - as with every company, not everyone who works there knows what they are talking about - I think you can point the finger at the company rather than the people though, as if they had the information at hand (such as problems with equipment and so forth) then they would not have to be tech heads to answer problems - even with all the knowledge in the world, if you as a support person dont know a server or router is dead - then you can only hope to second guess the problem.

Scunthopre on the whole is working, for now - it is still touch and go in my eyes with me having to force yet again a fresh IP to solve my "cannot browse any web site using NTL Proxy" problem. My patience to be honest with NTL is wearing ver thin on the gorund - I personally think another outage like the last lot and no more hoping it will be fixed but rather a phone call to a ADSL to get hooked up while at the same time a call to NTL to cancel my BB - i think enough is enough with these problems - the last time for example a 56k Modem faster and better then this "10x faster Broadband".

monkeybreath,
can we have an update on the official reason for the outage/degraded service?

i know someone mentioned a knackered ubr... and it was going to be replaced.

is this the truth or is it something else?

cheers.

Ok i appologise for my outburst and yes the name calling was a little oTT, but please bear in mind i have phoned BBS every day since the 30th of Sept given the run around on so many occasions it was unreal ive had managers phoning me back saying they have no idea why or when it is going to be repaired and the usual tactics of trying to assosiate the problem with my computer eg firewall, router and modem i even had one BBS guy say that he had no idea there was a problem when 1 its on the Status page and 2 theres a automated message saying that dn15,16,17 and ng are having connectivity issues. so please forgive my venting.

Just for the record the FAX Number to send in a compaint has been changed and it is.

I can understand your frustations but you have to be a tad careful not to take it out on others who do want to help or sweeping everyone with the same brush will only lead to further stress and tensions and the problem still unresolved. :)
