What went wrong?

I suppose this could be put in gaming but more people read this part plus the problem is a hardware one.

Just installed Doom 3 but won't initialize. This is the error message:

I don't do gaming but the first thing that came to my mind was Direct X so I'm downloading it as I type - but if that's not the problem then does anybody know what it may be?

Anybody know what that problem may be?

Think that'l be your problem then m8, don't think it supports the game.

Could be wrong though, so may be worth upgrading DX to the latest version and seeing what happens.

Yes, thanks :)

Not compatible, I think. Check id's website to confirm, but I think you need a more recent card (even if it is campatible, it will run like a 3-legged dog, I'm afraid)

Re: What went wrong?

Same card as I have, if I had Doom 3 I could say if it worked or not :erm:

Re: What went wrong?

It would probably work at 320x280 on low detail*, you'd also need the newest drivers to ensure you have the latest OpenGL version.

*I've seen it running on a Voodoo5 in this forum before. :D

I've had it running (if you can call it that) on my laptop's radeon 7500 - at a whole 2 - or even 3 fps :)

I'd say that even if the card would run it - it would be virtually impossible to play...

OK I'll try and get some OpenGL drivers. Thanks.

Re: What went wrong?

Just an idea - are you running this from a shortcut on the desktop? Have you tried running the exe file directly from the install directory....

Re: What went wrong?

I can't be bothered lol. Far too tired. I'll try tomorrow.

I guess I'm just behind the times with my hardware.

Thanks guys :tu:

Re: What went wrong?

i had a similar error on another system, uninstalling the old graphics drivers and installing the latest ones from the web did the trick for a freinds system.

it even ran on a crappy 32mb sis card on a laptop, yes it was lagged! :D

Re: What went wrong?

Just installed some nDVIA drivers and it's working!

Thankyou very much guys! :tu: :)

Isn't too fast though!

Only just. I have that card plus Pentium 4 2.5Ghz and it's no more than 5 frames per second on a half decent resolution. :(

Richard M 28-09-2004 21:23

Re: What went wrong?

320x280 on low detail should be playable I hope.

EDIT: On that CPU you will get an awesome experience with a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro which cost £100 these days. (if you have more than 512MB DDR RAM) :)

Macca371 28-09-2004 21:27

Re: What went wrong?

Yeah. Anyway I'm thinking about buying a graphics card at the weekend, hoping that will drastically improve the speed of play.

EDIT: £100? I'll have to have a word with the old man. I have 256MB DDR at the moment, what will that be like?

Richard M 28-09-2004 21:30

Re: What went wrong?

Erm, "OK".
512 would be much better, 1GB would be excellent.
I run my main machines with 1GB of PC3200 DDR. :)

I have a 1.74Ghz AMD Athalon XP processor.

I think it's memory which is most important to be honest

Richard M 28-09-2004 22:12

Re: What went wrong?

Upgrade to 512MB with a Radeon 9800 Pro and you'll be fine. :)

Electrolyte01 29-09-2004 07:38

Re: What went wrong?

512MB memory is low on certain games these days. I have 512mb DDR RAM and I get a lot of disk activity in certain games because there isn't enough. My processor isn't too good either, just a Duron 1.8GHZ. Also have the GeForce4 MX420 though.
