NTL & SMS

I've bought a new cordless DECT phone which is SMS compatiable. (Dual Binatone GT10 I think QVC)

Will SMS work with NTL, do I need to active anything on NTL, what will this cost

AFAIK, Only BT supports SMS to/from landlines at the moment. NTL have not announced any plans to support it either.

Re: NTL & SMS

I've just tried texting my landline.
It did come through, but in voice format. And it said that the service was provided by BT. I'm not so sure about texting from a landline, but I'm sure you could get an official response from someone.

Doesnt work here... seems a bit pointless having it on your home phone.

Re: NTL & SMS

OK, it now appears to work on NTL.

You can text a NTL landline from a Vodafone or T-Mobile phone (maybe also 02) but not Orange.

The voice message does say that it is the BT SMS service and the number to ring to administer it is the same as the BT one.

So, I assume the text goes to BT who provide the service and ring the NTL landline number.

Re: NTL & SMS

I think you have to have caller display enabled for the text to work...which rules out a lot of the ntl estate.

And a BT SMS compatible phone - which rules out even more of the NTL Caller ID enabled areas, which use a different system.

Re: NTL & SMS

To view/send texts you need a BT line, an SMS compatible phone and be subscribed to Caller Display. It will not work on NTL regardless of caller display availability, end of story. I doubt NTL have any plans for it.

Yet another reason why I've got BT now :D

However, as said, you can received voice-mail versions on a landline via the service BT provide, though I'm surprise BT forward it to an NTL line.

Have you signed up to the BT Text service that handles the SMS messages for the Panasonic DECT phones ?

Doesn't the Amstrad use it's own service rather than relying on the telecom company's service? i.e. it doesn't work via Caller ID like the BT system?

I'd assume that when sending it calls some local rate or freephone number to send the message much like a computer would. On receiving, maybe it works like a fax machine, in that it listens for tones and then receives the message.

daxx 31-10-2004 21:54

Re: NTL & SMS

Sending an SMS on the Amstrad emailer phone works by sending an email to the gateway at sms.amserve.com which then dials out to the phone and sends the SMS.

I assume that the way the BT service works (and the reason that you need to subscribe to Caller ID) is that the phone recognises the BT SMS number and instead of ringing "downloads" the SMS (like a MODEM, hence the bleeps). Have you got Caller ID enabled on you line?

Nemesis 03-11-2004 13:05

Re: NTL & SMS

The panasonic DECT phones support a third party SMS feature ... this recently changed to be the BT Text service. You need to sign up with them and then you can send and receive SMS messages to your phone.

There is nothing that NTL need to do ..

I have some instructions on how to change the Panasonic phones to subscribe to the new service ... I'll post them

I beleive the way landline SMS works is that there is a message centre number programmed into your SMS phones. When you send an SMS the phone dials the message centre and transfers the message - BT charge 10p per call to this number.
AFAIK, for it to work on NTL all they have to do is allow your phone to call the BT message centre (which they may or may not) and then charge you for that call (I do not know how much).

There is nothing more technically difficult than that so there is no real reason why it should not work on NTL (receiving SMS to the phone as text is a different matter).

Nemesis seemed to be suggesting that Panasonic SMS phones were fully working on NTL, above.

I have just tried texting from my orange pay as you go phone to my NTL Landline and got the message in voice from the BT SMS System.

I dont have an SMS phone, but have caller display.

BT have a web page which explains the service and under the FAQ section gives the required settings for various phones. I would be interested to hear if anyone can get this to work to send SMS's.

The Web page is http://www.bt.com/bttext

bontrager 03-01-2005 11:10

Re: NTL & SMS

well none of my texts from the phone ever arrived, but its receiving the ones from orange okay.

Txt messages to ntl phones.

Messing around yesterday I sent a txt to my landline and was amazed to have it ring and a womans voice announce that I had a text. Since when have we been able to do this? According to the voice it was the BT service that sent me the text so I do suspect it may be restricted to O2 customers.

Anyone have any ideas?

shredder 28-03-2005 16:41

Re: Txt messages to ntl phones.

Hey fatboy, nope, it works on both my bt and ntl line and me and my fella were playing around with it and it worked from my vodafone and his orange mobile.

blackthorn 28-03-2005 16:48

Re: Txt messages to ntl phones.

I`m with vodafone, I`ve just tried it and it works on my ntl number.
Now that will be cheaper than using my phone to call home. Texts only cost me 3p.

ha ha, the woman never pronounces the words correctly! 3p? wow mine cost 12p!?

does anyone know if the woman understands text speak?

shredder 28-03-2005 17:40

Re: Txt messages to ntl phones.

i doubt it, she can't speak english! i put xxx at the end of the message and she said cross cross cross, if you use text speak she just reads out her own bizaare rendition

Yep, just checked the manual:
FD = could not connect to SMS message centre
FE = An error occurred (really helpful, not)
EO = number permanently withheld or not subscribed:td:

Try the old number 1470P09110235029 it worked for me ymmd. NTL tariff PG3 12p. Obviously some NTL areas don't have 17094009 programmed yet. There's a Telewest page saying the BT text system works, so maybe the merger will help.

Re: [Merged] NTL & SMS

The big Caller Id. / SMS question. Can anyone confirm the availability of Caller Id. (CLI) and SMS on NTL in the Aylesbury HP21 area (Bromley hardware if that is relevant)?

Also, can anyone recommend a suitable 'phone for use with NTLs Caller Id. (CLI) and SMS (if available)? Ideally a DECT cordless 'phone but even and add-on caller display unit would be of interest.

Félim
