Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

Do you have a firewall running? What operating system are you using on the PC?
Have you tried the user name in lower case only as it and he password are case sensitive?

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

I am running Zone Alarm
Windows XP home
User names exactly as given etc.
Thanks
JOHN

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

Have you checked in Zone alarm that upload.ntlworld.com is not being blocked?
Might also want to make sure that for now the windows xp built in firewall is switched off just in case it is blocking it.
Other than that have you confirmed that the password you are using is the password originally given for the account?

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

1,does not appear to be blocking it,but I will try it tonight turned off.
2,where do I find this?
3,All confirmed by NTL tech support

erm not a good idea but if you want to try it quickly then you need to select the option to not have it start autmoatically when you restart the pc and then reboot. If you just tell Zone Alarm to turn itself off you will often find it leaves processes running that will cause you problems.
Quote:

2,where do I find this?
One way is:
Start menu
Control Panel
Network Connections
Right click the connection you use to access the Broadband feed, select properties,
Click on the tab marked "Advanced" and the firewall settings should be on that tab.

John
Confirmed by them but you still cannot upload? This would make me look at your firewall logs to see if the upload.ntlworld.com address is being blocked. Do you know how to get to your firewall log and check it?

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

Now there are days I wish I still ran Zone Alarm LOL Do you know which version you are running? I'm downloading the .pdf manual as I type but I think there is a tab within the Zone Alarm control panel that asks if you want to keep a log file and the link to view it is on that tab too.

johnniepk 18-08-2004 15:27

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

You probably guessed I have the free version and I got it about 3 months ago.
I am not at the home PC at the moment.
John

Paul K 18-08-2004 15:35

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

Thats ok the free version is still a good firewall. At a guess I would say Zone Alarm may be disrupting the connection to the upload space.
When you double click the icon in the taskbar area (bottom right corner of the screen) it usually launches Zone Alarms control panel.
If it's the new version the tab for the logs is the bottom tab on the left of the main screen according to the manual.
If you want to wait till you get home to be stepped through the process then no problem since there is always someone on the forum to help ;)

I would take up monkeybreath's offer for him to check out your webspace for you. You can always get one of the mods/admins on here to confirm he does work for NTL, if you are unsure, but I know he has helped several people with webspace issues in the past :)

Make sure you do it by Private Message (PM), though, don't post any of your details 'in public', on here ;)

No luck last night at up to approx 8pm. Then I had to go off line

Nice man from CF (see above) advised a bit later he had ironed out a few problems at that end. I have tried quickly this morning but it did not work but I was rushing it a bit so will try again when not rushing later today.
Feeling hopeful.Will post latwer.Thank you

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

have you tried using internet explorer to just ftp into your webspace to see if it works.
if you haven't try this
open internet explorer in the address bar type
ftp://username@upload.ntlworld.com
username being your original ntl issued username, changed ones or second email address names don't work.
when prompted enter your password
again only your original ntl issued password will work.

if you get a blank webpage and no errors you should be in and can now use copy and paste to transfer whatever you wish into your webspace.

nope its just the user name bit not the whole email address needed ;) For example I would put
joe.bloggs@upload.ntlworld.com if my account was in the name of joe bloggs :)

Hi, I've been having similiar problems to the original poster of this thread, so I've followed the replies with interest, however on the above point, I've got my blank webpage, but when you say copy and paste to transfer whatever you wish into your webspace... I originally created all my stuff using MS Frontpage - is it just a matter of copying and pasting the stuff I've created in Frontpage to that blank webpage??? And then you have your website?? It's my first attempt, sorry to sound like a novice

Hi

ntl webspace does not support the Frontpage Server Extensions

there is some more info in this link

http://www.microsoftfrontpage.com/co.../nofp_ext.html

- however, if your site works without needing 'server side' functions, you should be ok. - I'm not familiar with Frontpage, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a facility for it to handle the upload of your site via FTP.

- good luck :)

np - ntl webspace is fine for 'flat' html sites, but for anything else you will need to look at 'proper' hosting, which unfortunately needs to be paid for. It's not that expensive, though - a 'co.uk' & basic hosting using I-Web's special offer to CF members can be less than £15 per year. :)

I've only got a basic one-page website :D that I want to put on the net, but hopefully in the future I will make a better website, and take advantage of the offer you've just posted, and pay for a better service, hopefully with FPSE. (Front Page Server Extensions)

However, all I want at the moment is to get this basic website(page) ;) uploaded to my free ntl webspace.

Just one question though, you know when they give you the free Web Space and it's something like http://homepage.ntlworld.com/firstname.secondname is there anyway you can change it's URL so that it's not showing your personal name details???

And when I do got to my personal Web Space web page it's says

I think you can have it changed by phoning Tech Support. AFAIK, you'd have to create a new ntlworld email address, & ask Tech Support to change your webspace to use that instead of your current main account name.

It's something people should be more aware of - that their name will appear in the URL. I don't think NTL warn people though :erm: I very rarely use my name on the web - it's always dwarfinleopardskin. If I want an email address that's my name, I can always create a secondary account in email options.

The webspace directory is the same as the username you chose when you regestered your internet connection, it will also be the bit before your @ntlworld.com email address.

eg, myne is
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hellochris00/
and hellochris00@ntlworld.com.

you can just copy and paste as you say and it should work.
you can also upload with frontpage to the same ftp address, in frontpage,
open your web in frontpage, click file - publish website and input the ftp address into the where box then just enter your password when prompted.
hope this make sense, if not I will have another go at explaining it later.

I tried to upload using the ftp address NTL gave me (ftp://firstname.secondname@upload.ntlworld.com/docs/ when I first signed up with them but when it did ask me for Name and Password it came back with;

Unable to open ftp://etc...etc...
1. The web server may not have FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
2. The web server may be temporarily out of service.
3 If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be incorrect.
4. An error may have occured in the web server.

try it this way
ftp://username@upload.ntlworld.com (notice no docs on the end)
also username is the first original username ntl gave you it's the same as the begining of your original email address changed or second address's don't work.
when prompted enter your original password, if this does not work let us know at which stage it generated an error.

sometimes when you change a password from the one generated by ntl - it changes - but leaves the webspace one the same in SABS (subscriber and billing database system)

this is often overlooked

Okay I finally got my website to work, using a ftp client - but as previously mentioned I'm not too happy about being directed to a webspace homepage that ends in my firstname.secondname. I've got nothing to hide, but, would you don't your personal details up there for the world to see.

I did phone Technical Support and they initially did try to change my NTL Webspace free homepage to something of my choosing, but it didn't work. In the end he gave up and said it didn't look like it was possible.

So it looks like http://www.i-websolutions.co.uk/cfhosting.php is the next step for me. ;)
I dont' mind paying £10 or so a year, and you seem to get much, much more with that package. Can you choose a domain name of your choice though, with i-websolutions?

I-Web are great :tu:

You can choose a domain name of your choice, although the cost is separate to the hosting.

You can either buy a domain name from somewhere like http://www.123reg.co.uk/, & point it towards I-Web's nameservers, or you can get the name via I-Web directly.

If you don't want to pay for a domain name, I believe I-Web also offer hosting where you simply have a sub-domain within i-web. I think Incognitas has that.

I have paid for a domain name from 123reg and have been invoiced for this, just checked and it has an holding page. So I now thought about signing up with I-Web-Solutions to take advantage of Cable Forum member discounts, however when I go to order I notice that the page where you enter your personal details and credit card details is not encrypted with SSL. i.e. it doesn't have padlock at the bottom of the screen and when I right click properties it says it's not encrypted. Am I being over cautious, but I thought that any page were you have to enter your personal details and Credit Card number should be SSL??? :Yikes:

when I paid for my hosting account with I-Web, it was via Pay-Pal and was definitely SSL encrypted - I wonder whether it might be to do with the problems that Pay-Pal have been having, rather than I-Web, themselves?

- you did the right thing by not risking your details, without being sure they were safe, though :)

iweb don't take credit cards, paypal or cheque? Most websites don't go secure until you have got to the input card details page (which I web don't have!).

That doesn't make them sound like a company you should use.
It makes them sound like the nigerian scammers ;) "send us your bank account number and we will give you money"
I would not deal with any company online that does take credit cards or paypal, it is the only way you have any sort of insurance when buying online.

It makes them sound like the nigerian scammers ;) "send us your bank account number and we will give you money"
I would not deal with any company online that does take credit cards or paypal, it is the only way you have any sort of insurance when buying online.

I wrote that badly didn't I. It should have said...

Iweb don't take credit cards. They take pay pal or cheque, both are done offline of the initial order capture transaction. The capture transaction creates an electronic invoice which you settle by mailing in a cheque or by sending a paypal payment to them. Whenever you send a cheque to someone you are sending your bank account details to them. This does not make cheques insecure. Signing a DD mandate to a company you were unsure of (some think this of NTL) would open your account to them, but to get DD collection authority you need to be vetted by the bank doing the processing so are going to be legit.

So if you want to pay by credit card you will be handing your cc details over to paypal not iweb.

I've 3 sites hosted and about 15 domains (pointed to) them, they've been great and respond to support tickets promptly too. Reliable email with spam trapping too.

So they do take paypal, i've never used the PP option but sent in cheques. TBH i can afford to take the £9.95 hit if I get scammed. They are distance selling compliant and their website has full contact details etc. I've sent them three cheques so far, and had no problems.

Remeber it's this .co.uk not one of the many similarly named competitors/site developers.

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

Just an update I did get a little confused, indeed you are correct; i-web took my paypal payment and promptly invoiced me for this.

I was probably getting a little paranoid when I went to that personal details page sign-up and it wasn't encrypted, you never know who could be lurking out there looking at what your looking at :Yikes:

Anyway I am now signed up with i-web and and took advantage of the discount deal for Cable Forum members. :)

So NTL Webspace was no good to me, because I could not choose my individual and unique domain name.

P.S. Is it easy to get i-web who now host my website to point to my 123reg domain name???

It is indeed.... logon to your account with 123reg and change the name servers (dns servers) to the ones that i-web supplied you. nb it may take upto 48 hours for the domain name to resolve to your iweb hosting.
