Price Rise in September

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but just been on Digital Spy and they have said that a reliable source has indicated that NTL are upping prices again in September this year due to the new Sky increases.... can anyone confirm if this is true or not?

As they say, the key to comedy is all in the timing. Good one, ntl!

It looks like ntl has been forced with this rise if sky have raised their prices recently as its always the case when Sky does this.

Whn was the last rise? June wasn't it ????

Jeez - I know NTL are bound by Sky's prices, but surely they must have SOME bargaining leverage - that's two price hikes in only a few months :(

Are we NTL customers or Sky-by-a-middleman customers?

Re: Price Rise in September

The last price changes were on the 1st of June.

From reading through the Digitalspy messages it seems to br bringing all the phone charges in line with BT (reducing the cost of the 6p - soon to be 5p plan) and adjusting the feature charges.

I can understand the Sky induced changes but can't see why the features are increasing again.

I would suspect that one of the price rises was Sky induced, the other was ntl's own doing-Sky have never put their prices up to the cable companies twice in a matter of months before, so I can't see why they would do it now.

Still-gotta pay for those director's bonuses somehow I suppose....

I am surprised at you, making such assumptions.

Sky have increased their prices to both their customers and to ntl twice this year. They may not have done that before, but they have now.

Maybe you should ask them why they've done it, rather than assume that they haven't done something because they haven't done it previously.

Sorry Sam, I actually did think after I'd posted it that it was a bit harsh (even by my standards)

I take back my comments re director's bonuses, & bow to your superior knowledge of Sky/ntl's relationship. :tu:

Thanks for the info that it was Sky behind the price rise(s) though, much appreciated. :)

It's such a moral dilemma. Get annoyed with ntl due to constant price rises and leave to go to the very organisation that's forcing them to increase prices? Eesh, it's like a greek tragedy...

Re: Price Rise in September

Why doesn't ntl create their own movie channels like NTL Movies? - they have a 50% stake in Front Row with Telewest having the other 50%, why can't they set up their own little movie network pretty much like Front Row is set up now? Having Sky Movies is not all that great IMO, with them only showing decent movies weekends or Friday nights. Sky have got a monoply here and someone should break that as two price increases in one year, there is no justification for it.

seaneeboy 27-07-2004 10:31

Re: Price Rise in September

Mick - I'd imagine they wouldn't get the licenses because (once again) of the limited customer base - Sky movies can tell studios they'll be an option to all digital and analogue sattelite customers, all NTL and all telewest customers...

My Sky bill hasn't gone up for donkeys- it's going to up to 41 quid in September, but that's the first time for about 18 months.

It would not surprise me if everybody on the 321 plan get it "automatically" just like BT have done with their basic customers.

I believe NTL "Absorbed" the price increase for about 6-8 months... it's quite possible it's only the premium channels going up, in chich case the base/family pack subscribers like meself will be ok...

Sky Digital prices have increased every year for the past few years and twice this year.

Sky Digital Family pack + Sky Sports & Movies

2001 - £34
2002 - £37
2003 - £38
2004 - £40
2004 - £41

Sky box office movies have also gradually increased from £2.99 a film to £3.50 and then £3.75 (£4.75 if digibox is not connected to phone line)

Sorry matey, I could have worded that better - I'm actually on Sky (had loads of problems with NTL digital, so switched) so, if Sky had put there prices up direct to customers, I should have had a rise (especially 'cos I have the full package), but it hasn't done for a while :)

I've had Sky for about 3 years so, judging by this, I should have had bills that started at £34 - however, I started at £37, went up to £39 and am now going up to £41. This means that, apparently, I was paying too much to start off woth, and have been paying too little this year

Unless NTL decide to scrap the basic 321 plan and move everybody to the 5p plan, like BT did, which would mean everybody would have to pay £1 more.

This is really annoying, 2 price increases in one year !!

The 1mb broadband is already very overpriced compared to the competition :(

Perhaps its to fund their free xbox offer with all new 600k & 1mb subscribers..

Charming !

i don't think ntl will because they've been advertising that they have the cheapest line rental in the UK. so it would be a bit silly to increase the price, to make one of the most expensive.

:)

Yes but they could increase the price by £1 and it would still be the cheapest line rental (same as BT).

Sam

It was all to do with Sky wanting to get their revenue per customer upto a certain level before the year was out so they were only going to achieve this by putting the prices up. They have said that there will be no price rises in January but they wouldn't rule out increases later in 2005

and selling SKY+ which costs an extra £10 a month or gives people an incentive to upgrade to premium channels.

Neil,

I think you may have misread etc's post, I think he is taking into account the fact that if you subscribe to the premium channels that the £10 fee is waived.

I'm sure I read this week (On the BBC website I think), that NTL were thinking of reconcidering the price increase for 1MB, after another ISP were droping theres price to 30 quid.

will try to check where I read this

that's cos you must have 2 or more premium channels. my point is... the sky + sub makes people spend more which is what they are after... regular income.

Nothing on the BBC website the last NTL related article is this one:

That was back in May.

Edit: My post was in response to david.ewles post. :)

I don't know about the BBC, but CF had a news story on the 2nd of July saying that the price of the 1mb service is apparently under review, due to BT Yahoo's 1mb service going down in price to £29.99

See here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/...-service-price
