e mail dead again

After days of erratic access ntl e mail seems to be dead, yet again, in Wirral, Merseyside. Or is it just me?

Perhaps it over ran?

Have you reported it to ntl, if so what did they say?

The server status page is currently reporting problems with sending email. But I've got no idea whether I can send or not, as I can't even connect (via webmail), and have been unable to receive anything all weekend :-(

I'm in Lincolnshire. I was just about to ask this same question, thankfully someone resurrected this "old" topic. :)

I phoned tech support lastnight (Sunday) in a bid to find out why one of my email accounts wasn't being recognised. Email was running exceptionally slowly then as well. I awoke this morning, hoping it would have been sorted out but obviously it isn't. Constant timeouts when polling the mail server. Lots of failed to authenticate messages and still one of my accounts isn't being recognised :(

SMTP flaky again

I've started getting the "error 452 - message rejected" (but may or may not have actually been sent..) thing again this morning (IG10 area) - anyone else seeing it...?

I thought we were supposed to be getting a 'new and improved' email system that would set the benchmark for a 'leading isp'. Or is this 'coming soon' still?

Email has been patchy all weekend for me, and I'm getting a little sick of it.

Well just to add another voice to record's chorus, e-mail down here in Portsmouth is acting flakey too!

Receiving appears to be working fine, but sending is incredibly slow if it gets out at all (assuming it *does* actually get out and doesn't get a "server not responding" message!)

Yup, same for me in Glasgow.

It's weird, last Xmas my Ntl mail was REALLY bad for about 4 months (only worked via webmail for that whole period and was iffy at that), then it's been mostly fine and all of a sudden in the last few weeks it's been very on-and-off again.

Coinciding with a huge upsurge in spam hitting ntl's servers. Plus, it's the summer hols. Untended spammed inboxes fill up, bounces soak up bandwidth, etc etc.

At a guess, I'd say all the endless "service poor due to maintenance" messages on the status page can be ignored as, well, lies. They don't have the capacity to deal with the spam they're attracting, and they don't have a strategy for dealing with the fact.

Or if they do, I'd like to know what it is.

Is sending and receiving not handled by different servers? It's a bit of a mare that they can't handle the spam, not their fault that it's incoming of course, but they really should have a strategy by now.

I've emailed two ntl directors and one chief executive of ntl today over these e-mail issues. I've stated that I do not find ntl's email service at all reliable and as such, advised friends to send mail to me via an alternative address. I'd consider myself lucky if I got a response but I just thought I'd do my best in bringing this ongoing issue thats been going on over twelve months now to the attention of those at the top.

I'm wondering whether this has actually been caused by the outbreak of mydoom.o that caused Google to have problems today.

Given the amount of virused mails that have been flying around it's possible it wasn't (for once!) ntl's fault.

The same as it wasn't for all the other viruses (virii?) that have done the rounds this year? ntl seem unable to learn any lessons (prob too busy spending the cash on the directors bonuses rather than the oft promised mail server improvements)

My ISP hasn't been affected by any of them, in fact I haven't had an enail problem since I ditched ntl in November last year (unlike all you lucky people!) ;)

Why oh why, do you put up for what is nothing short of an absolute rip off?

Well I finally managed to connect for half an hour or so first thing this morning - first time since Friday. Deleted most of the Spam, then lost the connection, and have been unable to log on to email (either via Agent or Webmail) since then.
And still no mention of problems on the server status page. (apart from the thing about sending email, which ironically worked fine when I briefly did manage to connect)

chopsmcp 27-07-2004 17:43

heads up: ntlworld losing mail

In case anyone hadn't realised, one of the less obvious symptoms of the current mailserver shambles is that mail is being lost. Stuff I sent myself from another account two and three days ago has yet to show up, along with mail I know was sent me by other people. Subsequent mail has arrived.

Of course, there's no acknowledgement of this on the service status page. But if it's important, don't rely on ntlworld. Get it copied to another address.

Chimaera 27-07-2004 17:46

Re: heads up: ntlworld losing mail

I found the best thing was to get a free Yahoo account - 100mb of space, great spam filtering and best of all - reliable !

You can use POP & SMTP as well if you sign up at the UK service.

Plus when (if!) you leave NTL, you don't have to change email address ;)

Cheers

I've set up a forward address to a non-ntl email account, so I pick up my ntlworld email from there instead.

Seems crazy that I have to do that, but at least it works and there's no delay on the fowarding of messages.

Interesting - how do you do that?

altis 28-07-2004 10:47

Re: [Merged] E-Mail dead again

You can set up various email options here:

http://www.ntlworld.com/help/custome...ilOptions.html

You can:
1) create extra email addresses (if you want even more spam :) )
2) set up a forwarding address
3) set up an automated reply (meant for when you're away but also useful for redirecting people when you change your email address)

Toreador 28-07-2004 10:54

Re: [Merged] E-Mail dead again

Thanks!!

P.S. 1) create extra email addresses - I've been trying to do this for several days now and it gives an error every time - "Your browser has issued a request that the registration server has denied"

I use Yahoo but there are many secure sites, i.e. banks, online shopping, etc. that won't accept web mail addresses. I use Yahoo to receive (or not receive!) copied e mails from ntl but you can't always use Yahoo to send e mail. Also there is the problem of adverts - most people receiving e mails don't want to see Yahoo adverts on their e mail. However, it is a very useful back up given ntl's e mail problems

If you use the SMTP & POP servers in your mail client (Outlook etc) then you won't see adverts and neither will the people you send mail to.
I've used their servers for months and haven't had any problems yet - I know that some places do restrict the use of free mail accounts though, for those you can use your NTL address and forward it I suppose, its a shame that NTL's email is so awful that we need to do all this, that and the measly 10mb they provide.

It's been exactly 1 week since my email service started erratically timing out or giving the "enter your username & password" screen while trying to access my mail. At the time I thought it had something to do with the planned maintenance displayed on the service status page, but that has long since been resolved.

My email problems are still just as bad as they were when the problems started last week, yet there is currently no issues concerning email on the service status page!

At least when this happened last time, ntl blamed virus attacks on their servers. This time they haven't even acknowledged that there is a problem.

This is going to sound strange but try deleting your account in Outlook Express and set it up again, for no reason I have ever been able to work out this does sometimes solve the problem

I totally agree with you. I am a CATV engineer, and, if my network was down as long as the mail servers someone would have my guts for garters (in the old days!)!. Bring back C&W, they investigated faults that affected x amount of subs. This mob (ntl) dont seem to bat an eyelid if the network is down for hours!?! :monkey:

There is no need for that sort of comment - the support people do not run the e-mail service, I'm sure they are just as fed up with it as the rest of us, probably more so as they get all the irate calls.

To answer the other question - the forwarding will not be affected by POP3 problems - that simply stops you accessing the mail on the servers - it does not prevent them receiving and forwarding mail.

LSainsbury 31-07-2004 23:35

Re: [Merged] E-Mail dead again

Forwading - waste of time...it'll only forward to another account when the servers are capable of performing the forwarding....if the ZX81 sorry servers are down, like they have been for the last 8 hours+ then no forwarding is going to happen....

Well if that's true, I'll put my hands up...I did'nt think it worked that way...but hey, I'm open to sugestions!

Think I might setup my own forwarder in that case!

your comments are valid for the e-mail service in general, but not relevant to the people on the phone lines :erm:

I forwarded one ntl account that had spam trouble, to my hotmail, last night, so far so good :tu:

Posted to NTL Service Status page - updated at 21:03

ntl Internet customers using the ntlWorld email service may currently be experiencing a degraded service, receiving errors similar to 'unable to connect to the message store' or 'invalid username and password'. Our engineers are aware and are working towards a resolution as soon as possible.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused

Geeeee - thanks.....we could have told you that....

What I'd like to know:

* What has happened - exactly....
* What are you doing to fix it....(ie...waiting for for a 16KB RAM pack upgrade)
* Estimated back in service time....

It's ain't f*****g difficult.

1. Yes we would.
2. Yes to the first bit
3. Agreed.

Why do you have to spoil a sensible post with irrelevant and stupid comments  - they don't do anything for the discussion, make you look a bit childish, and detract from some otherwise good points.

np - I got the message that spam filtering was available on hotmail accounts and forwarded my 'worst' ntl email address to my hotmail.

like i said, so far, so good, I've had some as 'bulk' mail, some as 'junk' mail, much less than the 'normal' spam, though :)

What beats me is if they work so goddam hard fixing it when is it less reliable then my next door neighbours car?

I mean it is hardly ever off the service status page in fact it should read

E-mail techinical problems ( like normal buggered)

I'm sick and tired and i use my ntl e-mail through outlook express and i would like to use a service I am paying for.

That is one area of NTL which is a blood boiler for me

Question...

How can I receive an email on one ntlworld account even if it was an hour and a half after it was sent, but on my other two addresses, Thunderbird states there's a problem with the passwords?

EDIT: Wouldn't there be a problem with every account?

Simcut 01-08-2004 00:51

Re: [Merged] E-Mail dead again

yep I've not had a single email in about 5 hours :/ which is strange as I get about 10 per hour on average :/

Re: [Merged] E-Mail dead again

What is really annoying me about these email problems, is that ... I use Outlook... when I get the errors popping up, they interfere with whatever else I'm doing...

I could be typing away at a letter then all of a sudden instead of typing in MS Word, I'm typing the contents of my letter into my password box for email.

Flippin annoying. Does anyone know a way of stopping these boxes popping up (I have at the moment disabled auto "timed" send and receive, but this is inconvenient)?

haven't been able to check my pop3 for the last 27 hours :(
the error message should say wait a few days and try again really...!

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'ntl', Server: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR mail storage services unavailable, wait a few minutes and try again.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

I didnâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t know they had upgraded the mail servers to the ZX81 I thought it was still on the ZX80??? Or was that the upgrade that took place???

Joking apart itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s back up this morning, but not one single email on either NTL account so being a sad person I sent myself an email with just tester in the subject line. The speed at which it left my outbox was like sending a 800kb file, the bar dragged across. Could that be they have forgotten to install the 16kb expansion card?? ;)

Oh the email came back so it is working, but not a single spam, have dear old NTL sorted the spam problem????

I tried to download my emails and got 40. Considering the time the email service has been off, that should be 400.
So what have they done with the rest? Will I ever see them?

yeah i've got the same problem it's back now but no mails timed during the outage.. guess the servers might have to get back in synch

Not sure if the "childish" comment was aimed at me or not - but that's happens when I get frustrated with something that's not working...and I fly info sarcastic mode....so appologies if I offended anybody!

Back to the topic - got 20 mails this morning - 18 spam - seems a little low on the spam count side - usualy get about 60, so looks like NTL still have work to do...

BTW - My money is on mail going down today at around 13:30 - any advances..? :Yikes:

There is only one downside to gmail is that it wants to open a new browser window for every single link clicked in an email.

So far I have 15 IE windows open, just waiting for my PC to scream out in agony. :D

Wow, just picked up yesterday's e-mail, ALL of it spam

Regrettably, some genuine e-mails sent yesterday has not arrived

Yup. Same experience here - and it's the third time it's happened this year. Judging by previous experience, what will happen is some of it will limp in over the next couple of weeks, and some of it will never show up at all.

If you speak to support staff, be aware that they're highly unlikely to acknowledge that they've lost any of your mail. They'll tell you it's "looping" - basically caught in a cycle, delayed but not lost, and you'll get all of it eventually. It's not true, but that's what they'll tell you. Presumably there are legal reasons they don't want anyone in an official capacity ever to admit to losing mail. (Has anyone *ever* seen an acknowledgment that mail's been lost on the service-status page? I haven't.)

Also be aware that some outgoing mail is getting delayed/lost as well.

HTH

Re: [Merged] E-Mail dead again

I reported earlier in this thread that I had contacted the chief executive of ntl, Simon Duffy, Bill Goodland, ntl director of internet and Aizad Hussain, Managing director of the ntl home division. I had not received a reply up until lastnight when I re-submitted my email to all three of them, because yet again the mail servers were down. An hour later I received a reply from the chief executive, Simon Duffy.

Quote:

Mick

I understand your frustration and apologise for the problems. The story is long and complicated, though I know that's not much comfort to you and others who are experiencing the difficulties.

I am currently in the USA on business, but I will ensure that you receive a response next week explaining the root causes of the problem as well as what we are doing about it.

To give you a quick overview now, the problem is a hardware one. We recently upgraded to the latest Openwave email platform at a cost of several million pounds. Openwave is the number one email platform worldwide, so there should be no problem with it. However, the (new) hardware on which it is running is not working properly. We are working with the hardware provider, who is one of the leading server providers worldwide, to fix it. I'll ensure you get more detail next week.

Apologies once again.

Rgds,

Simon Duffy.
I explained in my mail to them that its time for some answers and real action and I also said that any answers they give will be shared with the cable forum community.

I am not sticking up for ntl here but I think as a company I would be pretty cheesed off having spent millions on an upgrade only to watch it fail constantly. Still, like Simon says - its not much comfort to us who have had these email problems for a good while now. (Over 12 months) However, the response from Simon is appreciated. More openness is needed like this.

IanUK 01-08-2004 17:02

Re: [Merged] E-Mail dead again

Its certainly nice that you got an answer.

Lets hope next weeks more detailed response is positive !

So, instead of letting their customers know that there is a reason for the email problems, they again, treat us with contempt & keep us in the dark.

Why isn't there anything on the service status page about this?

I wonder what he means by "recently upgraded". Are we talking days, months, weeks?

Mick - this is interesting, and I'd echo what you say about the guy having the decency to give you a proper reply. Those of us who slag ntl off for its failings should give them credit when they do something like this. The one thing about his response that I find a bit - well, surprising - is that this problem with the new hardware should have coincided with a massive increase in spam (from the wanadoo porn dialer spammers) hitting ntlworld accounts. (As discussed elsewhere.) If you have further contact with him, maybe you could try and find out if the two things are in fact unconnected, or if the increased traffic is contributing to hardware failure?

Should I be worried that I can get mail to and from My Primary account but all the secondary accounts seem to get a message back saying...

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

Is this a normal symptom of a failed hardware upgrade?

My email was working briefly first thing this morning (first time in over a week). I got to delete most of my Spam, plus the 2 'over your limit' messages from NTL admin [what do you expect if email is down for 9 days]. Then it went down again (about 9.30) and has been unavailable ever since. I've got a forwarding thingy set up so can receive OK, but can't send or clear out messages.
