Redundancy: Redeployment Unsuccessful

Many of you will know that I am due to be made redundant by ntl in October.

Sadly, despite my attempts at getting redeployed into one of the many new jobs at the Manchester site, I learned recently that the last of these attempts has effectively been unsuccessful.

There is, therefore, no job for me at ntl for the future, so I will be leaving the company by the end of the August. At that time, I'll simultaneously be leaving this site, as I won't have anything to offer and I'd rather make a clean break.

Re: Redundancy: Redeployment Unsuccessful

I'm sorry to hear that - but please don't go, Mark. :( There's plenty else to talk about and you will still have a lot of experience and knowledge under your belt. If you really can't bear to hang around in ntl-related threads, come and spend time in the basement instead. There's plenty of fun to be had there.

Thanks, but honestly when I leave ntl I want to put the whole thing behind me and move on. That's no reflection on the excellent management of the site, it's just a personal thing.

Mark I kinda know how you feel, when I left ntl I went through the same feelings but you might find you feel different abt posting on this site once you leave and get a new job. I know i did :)

Mark ... You have invaluable knowledge that will not dissapear from your head when you leave, and as we have seen you like helping people.

Methinks you can't just walk away from a needy customer ;)

Think about it ... :D

sorry mate that is a ***** outcome for you :(

like others have said , there is no reason to leave this site though , having lived through the threat of redundancy i know how you feel , i was one of the lucky / unlucky ones who are going to stay where i work , no help to you though , mind you , you still have some time to look around for something else :tu:

Mark,

Your knowledge and experience wont evaporate overnight, you would still be a valued member of this community.

You could choose to not participate in the exclusively NTL related threads.

You could choose to register under a brand new name, and not tell anybody.

I mention the 2 items above to show that there alternatives to simply abandoning a forum you've chosen to post in over 300 times.

I know the pain of redundancy and not getting redeployment. It hurt me like hell after 25 years service. Live goes on though.

Hope you find another job, and hope you choose to remain with the forum.

I can categorically state that that is not the case.
My manager knows I operate on here. She sometimes reads it too. I have even used things I've done on here as evidence in reviews, interviews, etc. It's just been treated like any other form of customer contact, as long as I follow common sense rules.

As far as ntl are concerned I'm just assisting customers and solving problems, they don't care how I picked up the issues in the first place.

I realise this is going to disappoint the conspiracy theorists, but that's honestly the way it is.

The reasons I've not managed to get redeployed are mainly because I wasn't going to take a paycut, but also because I am utter rubbish at the roleplays that have to be done in these interviews. Because I already know the company, I tend to stray from the script and behave as if it's a real call, sadly that is not what is looked for as a rule.

I have numerous skills, I am probably one of the top few Harmony people in the region, but I'm afraid all my knowledge is going to go down the plughole.

A great shame, but I hold no grudge against ntl for it. It's their call, after all. I believe they will be slightly poorer for not having me, but nobody is indispensible...there are others like me who are staying.

Hey Mark. I did the same thing when i left ntl. I stopped using .com pretty much the day i left. I never really got involved with all the non-ntl related things that went on. After a while i came back on, and to honest now i don't pay attention to the ntl things on the site. If you do leave then i wish you all the luck. :)

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. I am sorry that I really won't be carrying on here after I leave...I do need to make a clean break.

My knowledge and skills will actually be of little use if I don't have access to the ntl billing systems, so in fact I'd be next to useless.

However, I'm still here for at least another five weeks!

Good luck Mark and you are a valued member of this community that has moved on from just ntl community.

I can relate to that  I regularly come across jobs that I know I can do but I also know I'll never be able to demonstrate that I can do the job. Recruitment has become too Americanised, with far too much value placed on aptitude tests, team exercises, and role playing. I remember a job interview with Norwich Union in which the guy running the interview had a piece of paper with his questions on - he couldn't ask me a question that wasn't on the bit of paper. Equal opportunities apparantly. More like madness to me. What happened to the days when an interview was little more than a chat with management so they developed a gut feel for your suitability.

Hey I was one of the few trainers that knew Remedy, SABS and Onyx as well as the Nortel CVX platform, but I left and the company kept going ! (much as I beleived that it would crash and burn)

I, like many, left the employ of ntl: and I stil visit here and post here. But if you feel that you feel leaving this board will help you make a clean break then farewell, but remember many here have made their feelinsg clear on how much they want you to stay.

BTW, which region are you ????

I hate the way this country has become Americanised, and how key skills have been pushed to the back to concentrate on BS. I find it difficult when I have been involved in interviewing people and HR have made it clear which candidates they prefer, these people are usually the weakest technically and sometimes are the biggest BS merchants you will come across.
I am amazed that many HR people seem to have the attitude that finding suitable employees is a chore, and they just want to get the first person who answers the HR type questions correctly.

I went for a second interview with a company last week, but still not heard anything yet.

I went to a second interview last week and was interviewed by a couple of managers and their senior engineer, the senior engineer was the typical ex-army bulls****er. He tried to ask difficult questions and became unstuck when he was trying to be clever about things he obviously knew very little.
I had already told them I was not interested in the position before the interview, but they still wanted to chat about other positions that could be available. The ex-army guy had taken an instant dislike and possibly saw me as a threat so I had nothing to loose anyway.

Some of his questions were very funny, and he asked me things that he thought I wouldn't know because those skills were not listed on my CV.

Re: Redundancy: Redeployment Unsuccessful

Hi Mark B and Escapee,
there was a little period of time when we all thought ntl may be changing to value the customer. This was of course very short lived. The number of good people and great talent this company has wasted is unbelieveable.I don't know what kind of a script ntl uses to deploy resourses but it's the wrong one. When the talents of good people like you are thrown away like this it is such a waste.
The reason for this in most companies now is all based on cost.Everything priced down. You will get employment but it will not use your talent because of the people running companies now.I'm a time served Electrician and I work in a cinema. No one wants to pay for your skills anymore.I'm an old wrinkly so it don't bother me but I feel so sorry for all the highly skilled young people who are losing jobs.
I wish all the luck in the world to the people in ntl who are and have lost their jobs.Hope you all get employment quickly.
Best Wishes, George.

Just becouse you dont work for NTL any more does not mean that you can not continue to be a valued member of the forum. There are many many issues that users need help that do not need core NTL network access to fix !

Re: Redundancy: Redeployment Unsuccessful

Thanks to all for their kind words.

My notice formally went in today and I'll be finishing late August. I should have alternative employment secured by then.

After then, I will be leaving the site, as I have nothing to offer outside of ntl and in any case need this to be a 'clean break'. That is no reflection on anyone at the site or the management team here, who do a fantastic job. It's just the right decision for me.

However, I'll still be here and at ntl until then, and will continue to assist wherever I can up til then. Obviously as the date gets nearer I'll take on less because it might spill over to september when I won't have any access to the ntl systems.

I shall deactivate my own Harmony log in on the last day. That will be sad :(

When I've left other jobs, I've invariably arranged to 'phone in sick' on the final day because it all gets a bit emotional and I prefer to give it a miss. It will be a truly sad day as I really thought I'd be able to stay at ntl. I wanted to.

Yes.

But I can't face continuing to work for a company that does not consider I meet its standards, so I'm off. The schoolkids can have the jobs, that's who they are employing instead. I'm best off out of it.

none of my business - I know :dozey:

but,

think about explaining that to a future employer, could 'made redundant' be a better reason for leaving, than 'resigned', on a CV......

scrotnig 30-07-2004 00:37

Re: Redundancy: Redeployment Unsuccessful

Probably true, although current recommendations seem to suggest not putting reasons for leaving on CVs at all.

The company are effectively telling me I am useless to them. I can't perform well under those circumstances, and I just want out. At the moment, working at McDonalds or sweeping the streets would be preferable to the current situation.

However, I have at least one iron firmly in the fire at another company, and I have discovered today that I have one last interview within ntl which may or may not lead to something. I hope so. Despite all that's gone on, I'd still be delighted to stay with them.

Sympathies to all those being made redundant at this time. There seems to be too much of it at the moment.

My husband has survived and been taken back on at a higher wage scale because they really wanted to keep him.Sounds like they have done some culling of the regular staff who weren't up to the job and gone for higher skilled agency staff.Still not a good position to be in though!

If it's the same system that miraculously never has details stored of conversations/things promised to customers by lame ntl employees, then I think it's fair to say you will be safe.....;)

Yes Guv!

Na ntl don't have a clue lol - i heard once down the grapevine that someone who had left ntl quite a few weeks previously, just walked into the building swipped their card to get in logged into their PC, logged onto whichever system they were being billed from and credit'd their account. Never got done for it and this was years ago - don't know how true it is but nothing surprises me.

But seriously their fools, the company let good people go either by making them redundant or with the poor salaries/working conditions. For anyone still working for ntl - If you can find a good job outside of ntl go for it. I was once loyal to them but theres only so many times they can kick you in the balls before you finally say sod the loyalty.

Best of luck for those job hunting!!

I feel sorry for the people who are being made redundant and I hope they find suitable positions as soon as they can.

I have been one of the ones slated by ntl employees in the past for sla**ing off ntl as a bad employer, I think many of these people have now found themselves in the same position and now probably feel the same about the company.

I felt, and stated before that more redundancies would be on the way. I feel this because ntl has done very little to really improve the way the company operates and the only way they can keep shareholders happy is to cut jobs.
I feel it will be detrimental to the long term future of the company, and I hope the people who have taken the company line in the past will realise that ntl ie: CableTel has treated the majority of employees badly since they arrived on these shores and started employing in 94/95.

There is such a bad morale in many ntl departments/regions and I felt long before I left ntl that too much permanent damage was already done. All that has happened sinse that time is the errosion of benefits and the pressure increased on employees to meet unrealistic targets, all so the management can keep themselves in a job.

As an example none of the employees earning over fifty thousand pounds a year in a position requiring a company vehicle lost their car/van fuel entitlement!

Does this mean that any engineer that turns up to repair or sort out my system could possibly arrive by bus? :)

No :D

It means all the employees earning less than 50K lost their personal fuel allowance, the lucky ones earning over 50K kept the perk. It was a big issue with some of us due to old agreements that ntl agreed to honour.

They have also taken cars off network engineers and given them vans in my old region. remember when we complained about other regions having better pay we were usually told. "Yes, but you were given cars with personal use as part of your package instead of vans" It goes wothout saying they have taken the cars away but not increased the wages of those affected to compensate.

I am not trying to take it off topic, but if you were in one of the meetings that I was in and heard HR's attitude towards employees it was disgusting. I do admit to having a little smile when they made all of HR redundant though, and these people had a taste themselves because they couldn't see they were nothing special to ntl management either.
The big joke of it was that HR was moved centrally, I understand that didn't work so it was moved back into the regions again. That's just typical ntl departmental re-orgs, they last about 18 months and when it's clear they are not working its all change by mixing the same ingredients they have used before to come up with a different flavour yet again.

Trouble is they all tend to leave a sour taste!

I am sure ntl will be looking to recruit in certain job functions in the future as they cut things to a level where the company ceases to function, but one things for certain is the best candidates are the ones that already have the experience and not many of them will touch ntl again out of choice.

And so......goodbye! (long boring post)

Quote:

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
Finally, the time is approaching that I never thought I would see. The time at which I leave ntl for good and, hopefully, start a new job somewhere else. Where, I do not yet know.

As I announced recently, I have handed my notice in at ntl due to my failure to secure an alternative role to replace my own when I am made redundant at some point towards the end of the year.

I have numerous skills and experience within the company, but I cannot jump through hoops at a role play interview and say the right buzz-words. I simply can't. I've tried, but I've failed. So the end looms. Today my team leader persuaded me to try one last throw of the dice & very kindly put me through a 'mock interview' for my own existing job to see if we could shed any light on it. I failed the interview. I cannot even pass a role play for the exact job I already do. It is a hopeless case. I knew as I was speaking that I was fluffing it. It's bizzarre, I just can't do in a fake situation what I do every day for real. But they can't make special rules for me. I don't cut the mustard at the interview, and if that happens, you don't get the job. Period.

Although I have some shifts still to do, I shall be using up some holiday time during my notice period. On top of that, I hope nobody takes offence when I say that I don't really intend to do any more than the bare minimum during my last few weeks at ntl, so offering any further assistance on here is not really an option. I'm truly sorry about that, but it's realistically the way things are.

I don't know what I will do on that final day. I am no good at them. They are bad enough when you DO want to leave, but I've never done one where I *don't* want to leave before. Leaving my now-famous desk knowing that I shan't be returning ever. Taking home the large collection of spider plants that I have become eccentricly famous for. There's so many I will have to do a couple at a time. It'll be like a countdown to the end. And I doubt any other employer would actually let me have so many. I tend to favour not coming in on the last day, but not deciding that until after you've left the previous shift. Then your last day only becomes known as your last day retrospectively...if you see what I mean.

Losing my ntl services as well. Because, for the same reasons I can't keep posting here, I can't keep them either. Actually having to use BT for broadband and Sky for TV. What have I ever done to deserve this? I've used cable since 1994! That's 10 years.

I'd like to thank my own department's management team, who really have done their best to get me coached in role plays so I could get another job, but I think perhaps they thought I was exaggerating when I said I was crap at them!

I'd also like to thank the team at this site for the great job they do in here, plus I'd like to thank the members here for the banter, the fun, the arguments and the atmosphere. I hope I've been of some use to those I have tried to help. I'd like to thank Bill C as well who has unswervingly gone round to fix all those customers with horrendous broadband problems in the NW for me...there may be one or two more to come from my remaining time but after that you'll be free!

Believe it or not I'd like to thank ntl! I've had, overall, a great three years with the company. There's been ups and downs, and downs again, but overall it's been great and I'm desperately sorry not to be staying on as the company moves into another new era.

I think perhaps I was a little niave in assuming that because I knew the job, the systems and the company so well, I'd walk into another job with them. That's not the case, and it brought home with a bump that however good you think you might be, there's always someone better. Better people than me are replacing me, and that's got to be for the best ultimately I suppose. I'm a bit of a loose cannon, I speak my mind and I occasionally break rules to get the job done. I don't think they want people like that any more, and if I'm honest I can see why. My time has passed.

I hope everyone here understands my reasons for leaving the site altogether, and realises that it's not indicative of any problems or dissatisfaction on my part. I just need a clean break. I don't want to be coming here and be constantly reminded of how things were, and how things could have been. When it's time to move on, you cannot leave bits of you behind, and that's the way it has got to be.

Finally, good luck to all the great people in Coventry who got their 90 days today. Ironically, that's where my job is going to go later in the year! And good luck to all the colleagues I'm leaving behind. For most of them, the end draws ever nearer, but THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!
