Need Urgent Help

while using my pc over th lastweek ive had many problems, so in true stick fashion i decided to reformat! but during the format i got erros that files could not be copied to the hard disk. i instead used the quick NTFS format, this worked fine no problems.
Pc worked fast as usual for about a couple fo hours, i installed my programs off my backup hard drive, but i recieved this error as it stalled during files being copied.
This is one of the errors i have recieved.

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
*** STOP : 0x0000007A ( 0xE15A4796, 0xC000000E 0xBF919B35, 0x0C023860 )
*** win32k.sys - Address BF919B35 base at BF00000, DateStamp 3d6de5e5
Beginning dump of physical memory.

Ive heard it may be because of broken hardware... but im still not too sure, any tips would be great
ive allready reset my CMOS but that didnt do much!
My System is as follows:
Elite K7S5A
256 SDRAM
AMD Athlon XP 2100+
Seagate Barracuda 60GB
Another hard drive, 30GB
GF2Ti
Hercules Muse 5.1 surround
network card
Cdrw + DVD drive.

any more info needed just ask!
i really need help!
if my componetns are broke im resorting to replacements as they are still under warranty.

Stick

Could very well be your components. Then again it may be windows. I would suggest trying different memory as a starting point.

homealone 28-07-2003 13:58

Apart from a suspicion you may have a faulty hard drive, the K7S5a motherboard / XP2100 combo is extremely demanding of both memory & power supply.

With the extra kit you have installed I reckon the minimum power supply you would need for reliable operation would be a good make 350W.

Memory wise branded memory like Crucial works more reliably than cheap generic & the K7s5a allegedly works better with DDR than with SDR.

About the only other thing I can think of that could cause your problems is an overheating Cpu.

http://www.updatexp.com/stop-messages.html

take a look there, thats what i use at work for quick reference.

OStickO 28-07-2003 15:28

right i do have a 350W psu, thats a good thing :D
i do think that my cpu is overheating as it is running at 50C+ idle, when the case panels are off!
i am planning to upgrade cooling but this would put even more strain on the PSU! i have a psare psu that i may mount atop of this case to power all these new things im planning to get!

Dupre 28-07-2003 15:38

What power is your PSU giving off? 12v, 5v, 3.3v what are your actual readings? if they're well off that would drive your actual output down alot. (SiSoft Sandra will tell you in windows if you dont know how)

my CPU idles at 50oC and it has a Delta Screamer on it, noisey as hell, but it was the early 1600+ cpus, had heat problems. Get yourself a GOOD 400watt supply from overclockers.co.uk or ebuyer.com instead of goin for the cheapy ones, and/or a 2nd PSU.

OStickO 28-07-2003 15:51

ok, using mother board monitor 5 these are my readouts, i think.
3.3-3.24
5-4.92
12-12.89

having the case side panels could cause overheating because of disrupted airflow ;)

OStickO 28-07-2003 16:41

airflow? what airflow?!
i dont have any system fans, and wheh the case panels were on i sued to get about 60C+ but that was a v hot day.
i am planning to upgrade my cooling with about 4 more fans, controlled by a rheobus, a littlt off topic but i am modding my pc with a window kit and 2 cold cathod lights, should i get a mroe powerful or 2nd psu to power this lot? or will 35 be enuff as fans use very minimal poweR?

I've just upgraded to an Athlon 2200+ and a K7S6A processor (and a new PSU, new memory, new hard drive and new case. Hang on. I think that's called a new computer!)

To run this I went for the QTEC 400w PSU (which has two temperature controlled fans). What it *doesn't* have is a power out connection for the monitor (you power the monitor separately) which means it doesn't need to pull so many amps.

Also I went for the Coolermaster HAC-V81 cpu cooler which has a variable speed control so you can increase the amount of cooling when required.

Ok, I'm not overclocking or doing a lot of power hungry work, but it certainly seems to handle the load fine.

I got the stuff from Redstore.com who had the most competitive prices over all.

My Athlon 1800+ Palomino runs at around 35.C, did you use thermal stuff when you installed the heatsink?

Apart from that, sound like a HD overheating problem to me, those Seagate drives get very hot under load and when the glass disk warps (by a minute amount) due to heat expansion, the head sometimes has trouble reading/writing the data and completely loses track of where the data it just wrote is.

My IBM drive does it sometimes when copying large files, you can hear it make a click when the head skips, although it's only ever caused a stop error once.

hawkmoon 28-07-2003 18:13

This is what MS Technet has to say about it

"Stop 0x0000007A or KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
The Stop 0x7A message indicates that a page of kernel data was not found in the paging (virtual memory) file and could not be read into memory. This might be due to incompatible disk or controller drivers, firmware, or hardware.
"

Are you running NAV? I seem to remember that NAV can be responsible for causing this stop error.

It might also pay to run chkdsk /F on your drives as there might be some corruption - I have seen this put forward for the cause of STOP 0x7A as well.

OStickO 28-07-2003 20:01

right i reformatted! again, thats like 5 times in err 2 days!this time i left the old 30gb hard drive out and everything seemed fine! but while unzipping a file that was around 200mb, it crashed, of corse it did! so there is something still wrong, somewhere!
i am not running NAv, my psu is not powering my monitor, my hard drive does feel rather hot when i touch it. hot as in i think i could cook brunch on it!
i really need help quick i dont wanna take it back to the computer store to get new parts of the warranty as it leaves me without a pc and they'll charge to install it into the system!

OStickO 28-07-2003 20:02

i do not now if any thermal paste was used when the heat sink was installed, but i plan to upgrade my heatsink and fan as it seems rather small!

hawkmoon 28-07-2003 21:21

Stop errors are very difficult to interpret. The 0xc000000e part of the stop error points to STATUS_NO_SUCH_DEVICE - which actually seems to mean file not found under the win32 subsystem.

This could point to a problem with either the IDE controller or perhaps the IDE controller driver.

Have you run chkdsk over the drive to check for dodgy sectors? It could be that your pagefile is sitting on a part of the disk that has an error on it.

Virus scan the boot sectors of your drive as well just to make sure.

Just a thought... Check the EventLog if its XP, look for red warnings...

OStickO 29-07-2003 12:12

my hard drive was making funny clicking noises last night, worried me seeing it wa only 6months old, and seagate are pretty reliable! i thought the problem had been fixed by this 5th reformat, but no, i got the error at about 11pm last night, and being very ****ed off i just left the pc and got me some sleep, didnt get up till about 12 lol. well, im taking it to the pc shop where i got the parts from and who installed it so they can fix it.
will keep u updated some how.

Lord Nikon 29-07-2003 12:15

you could download SeaTools from the Seagate Website and run a few tests to see how healthy the drive is... also ALWAYS make sure S.M.A.R.T is ENABLED in the bios...

OStickO 29-07-2003 16:20

i used seatools and it said i had a defective drive, i am going to see if the shop thru which i bought it from will replace it, or i will have to send it back to a seagate place, the closest being in the nederlands!

OStickO 31-07-2003 12:02

well i took it back to my shop and said they'd have a look to see if it wasdefective and within 2hours i recieved a phone call that it was! speedy service :D and i got a replacement maxtor 60gb, so that meansi now have a new years warranty! w00

paulyoung666 31-07-2003 17:07

well sorted :)

OStickO 03-08-2003 15:05

yup thanks for all ya help guys :D
i appreciate it !
thanks !

Try re formatting and see what happens. it could be due to Windows or the components. if this doesn't help try talking to a technical support professional they offen help.

Lord Nikon 27-08-2003 19:00

Nice reply, slightly late WNA :D the drive was defective and replaced by the shop :D

Shaun 27-08-2003 19:12

Do you ever get the feeling someones trying to increase their post count by posting to old threads?

paulyoung666 27-08-2003 19:32

no im sure thats not the case ;) :p :p :p :p

Lord Nikon 27-08-2003 19:50

in which case...
