Who do you most admire?
 

If you have to choose one person who you admire for what they have done/what they stand for or for whatever reason, who would you choose?

It can be a person who is dead or it can be someone who is still alive, please give valid reasons as to why though to make it more intresting!

For me it has to be Winston Churchill - Purely for how he pulled this country through the second world war to make it the place it is today

Stephen Hawking, because he is living proof that people can become successfull despite adversity. He is also proof that although some people may look funny, they may well be smarter than you, so don't judge by appearances.

i admire a lot of people... from my personal life, my aunt for putting up with so much but still smiling, my dad for getting on with his life, my fella for his attitude towards life and not letting much get to him....

famous people: aristole and Plato for having amazing minds and coming up with some interesting theories, some were beyond their times

Leonardo da Vinci

I don't think any one man, since, has managed to contribute so much to Art & Science, as he did. He was talented enough to have been famous for his work in either field, but both at once, was extraordinary.

casting an eye at the 'time travel' thread, it has been speculated that Leonardo was a time traveller, who was unable to put some of his more advanced 'inventions' into practical use, due to limitations of materials & technology in that era.... - dunno, myself, but he was one clever bloke :)

in addition he sent thousands back to certain death in the USSR....with full knowledge of what would happen to them. Sorry, I just have a very different view of him. :shrug:

Yes he was a genius but sadly so much of his 'controversial' work has been lost or destroyed because of stupidity and religious zeal.

He was also inclined to be jack of all trades master of none.If only he had paid more attention to preserving his paintings especially those done on plaster and some of his oils....So much has been lost. :(

Most of all, it has to be my Mum. She has gone from being a cleaner to a nurse, then a Sister and now specialised Lymphodemia Nurse in 10 years. Her Job is now part sponsered by the Macmillians (which is always what she wanted) whilst raising 3 children. She is also running the great northern run this year, and most of all cause she loves me.

Emmeline Pankhurst - She and her daughters fought (literallly) for women to be treated as equals to men, us girls owe them a debt of gratitude :tu:

I do admire and respect Tony Blair for some of his policy's, and especially for his work in Northern Ireland.

However I think I'd have to chose Dmitriy Mendeleev, for his astounding work in constructing the periodic table and his contributions to science. Not only did he manage to come up with the categories for elements that had already been discovered he also predicted the properties of unknown elements since found. :D

I cannot choose just one person, I look up to people who excel at what they do best in whatever field they stand.

I agree with Stephen Hawkins, he is a man who has managed to carry on under the most severe challenges. He manages to lead in the field of science and the universe by introducing the whole topic to the 'average Joe' in a way that all can understand.

Also I admire Richard Branson for his skill and ability in business matters. I know many people who work for him and they all have met him on a personal basis. They all say that he is still your average guy who is not afraid of getting his hands dirty when mixing with his employees. He is also know for his kind generosity in dealing with people that he meets.

Also for business is Sir John Harvey Jones. He is well respected for his business acumen and is not afraid of laying the truth down to any and all chief execs of any company and putting them straight when it comes to getting things going again.
If he was given a go at sorting the health service we would see a huge and rapid improvement in the way that things are run. (from the top, not from the workers)

I could go on but I will keep it short(ish)

Personally my choice is Colonel Blare 'Paddy' Maine. The most highly decorated soldier in the British Army. Co-founder of the SAS in North Africa with Captain David Stirling. He was also a pre-war Ireland rugby international. A giant of a man.
