Can you live without the internet ?
 

So how long can you live without the Internet ?
I'm going away for a few weeks and I'm going to be without internet access. Its in a remote village in the mountains and its like going back in time to the stone age.
I am going to HAVE TO find some net acess somewhere in some ridiculously overpriced internet cafÃÃâ€*’© somwhere 50 miles away to access the net, as I think I will go insane without a PC.

So, can you live without it ?

Live without the internet? Err Not a reallistic option at the moment since it's how I contact my better half.
If I were living with her then I think I could survive for a while since we spend a lot of time away from the PC when we are together.
When on holiday in Orlando in 2002 I must admit I logged onto a PAYG terminal to send a holiday message to friends on another forum. Only did it the once and then I was Offline for 2 weeks ;)

i have only been online since 2000/2001 and i must say i could not really live without it, the resourcefulness of the internet is unmatched in the real world, it opens up a new road of information, shopping, creating new freinds and relationships, it can be a helpful network for a variety of things....

not to mention keeping in touch with loved ones ;)

I think I could, though I can't immagine any reason why I would go somewhere where I couldnt get access.
I used a computer recently without any form of network or internet connection, it was like a totally different machine, instead of bright and interesting like my computer, this seemed very dull & boring, I guess if it wasnt for the internet I wouldnt be as interested in computers as I am now.

i use the internet to keep my fella entertained while he is at work..... plus since i do not see him every day it is another way we have of keeping in touch,
when i was at uni i used the net a lot to keep in contact with friends and family back home, and now i use it to stay in contact with my uni friends....

sometimes i only spend ten minutes on the pc, others i spend a lot of time

No!! :D
I'm on the net for too much - not only for keeping in touch with people ;) but researching stuff for work - and it's so much better than dragging round the shops looking for things!
I think I'd get withdrawal symptoms if I had to give it up! :Yikes:

The net is part of my job since I run a number of websites for work, as well as servers for Digiguide. :)

I think I've used the net for many things:

- Chatting to Uni friends.
- Keeping contact with family abroad and doing cam and microphone conversations. Cheaper than calling on the phone.
- Buying CD's, DVD's, Gamecube games, Clothes, Electronic equipment, etc.
- Finding out information about places, booking holidays.

Its a great tool and also a great way to keep in contact with friends.
I'd be lost without it.

Yes i could quite happily live without the internet its just a case of breaking the habbit of going online once you have done that a long as you replace it with something else then you will not miss it :)

although i do acknowledge it is a very good way of keeping in touch with people and even making new friends as I have done on here!!

Thanks to my job i'm on it most of the day.......... and then i rush home to get back on it.....

While it's an incredible source of information and misinformation, educational and yet capable of misleading, a cheap form of communication and even socialising...... i believe that it makes us lazy and to a certain extent unsociable - this is still taking into account making friendships (if that's what they are) via the internet.
At the same time..... for those people that are incapacitated, socially or geographically challenged....... it's an incredible world........ i just hope i don't end up living here :)

There is a program/game Second Life that allows you to do just that....... have a second life online.......
How long will it be before we can become human peripherals and live online via usb? ;)

Bit scary..... but it's a Brave New World.

Webcams can also help in creating and developing new relationships....... or ending them :p:

Well............ i didn't say i couldn't live without it........ i just don't have to at the moment...... so i don't :)
There are many perfectly good reasons why i'd go without it........ if i had to......... bit like sex....... smoking............ alcohol...... chocolate........i wouldn't die without it...... but other people might ;)

Actually - my missus didn't see what all the fuss was about - and was a tad irritated about the amount of time I spent on the internet.

But then I built her a computer - and she's now a convert/member on here too :)

Most definetly........ but then it's really down to the people involved to decide what their priorities are...... if it's down to addiction then it might be more difficult but some people spend more time playing games or in chatrooms than with their partners and children through nothing more than choice :shrug:

The Internet is a double edged sword.......... no more no less.

I guessed as much :( and i know at least one person that has had to change or adapt to make their relationship stronger..... well to keep it alive really.
While i was a little humorous in my posts, i also hinted at the disasterous effects it can have on an individual....... well at least i mean to :erm:

Can i say that if i was lived with a partner......... i wouldn't be here right now........ unless he was with me.......therefore my home life would be very different but i work from home too, so i multitask :)

Total webaholic, even when I can't get to a pc I look at the forum on my phone, I am seriously thinking of upgrading again to vodafone 3, and a lappy to keep up on things, ( sad ) :shrug:

To me the internet is a great research and communication tool. Neither of which are priorities when enjoying holidays on some sun kissed beach or in a National Park.

However, having broadband i'll leave the pc on when i'm at home, and browse, participate in VR universes, forums etc when having coffee breaks during my normal routine. I don't need it, but like anything you get used too, when it's absent or not working then it's sorely missed.

It's a tool, an aide, but not my life.

It's good to know that there are people who are prepared to compromise, to strengthen or even save their relationship. Unfortunately for some, there are those who are either unwilling or are unable to compromise because of their addiction. And as a result, relationships with family and partners suffer as a consequence. Sad, but true :(

Ah yeah I think you have apoint there about the broadband.
In the days of early dial up I would only connect after 6pm when my service provider offered free access, but now on the "Always on" broadband connection the PC is on all the time.

I know I spend a little too much time on the net, but you can have some great conversations.
Even speaking with friends that you see face to face, there are some things you can say online that will be easier to say. You dont see the person and can talk and ask things that you might not otherwise mention normally.

I guess one of the great things for me has been the fact that I have family all over the place so it is great to keep in touch.

I know it is possible to live without the net but its just something I've got used to. I grew up with computers at school and have had the net for years now.
If I take my Mum however, she has never used the net at all, if at all used the computer. Some people are just not interested in computers and the net and although I think they ar emissing out, I can see they can lead a great life without it.

So, yeah I do need the internet, for the main reason that its a great wealth of information and for keeping in touch with friends and family.

So I too must stand up and present myself to the group.

Well when my BB connection went off for a couple of hours a while ago I had to talk and listen to people. :disturbd:

It took two weeks of Valium before I settled down again. :disturbd:


The truth is, when I am at home, I regularly go on line to browse a range of sites and I miss them very quickly when they are not there.
But when I am away on holiday I do not think about it much, except the niggling thought of plowing through all the junk e-mails after two weeks. :Yikes: (it would not surprise me if my box overflows this year with all the crap I get at the moment)

Well, I do use the Internet a lot (both at work and at home), and while, if the internet disappeared for any reason, I may well have to do some work :Yikes:, I am sure I could cope.

A car crashed into an NTL box on my street at the weekend about a year ago and my net was down for 3 days. I went absolutely mad !!!
I had about 5 ebay auctions finishing as well so I really wanted to win them.
It can be soooofustrating when the net just stops when you just need it.

My wife used to nag at me about the time I spent on the internet, until the day she decided that she wanted to find out something & started to use it herself. We now use it at home most days & the kids (& I) use it for Xbox live all the time.

Unfortunately since leaving NTL in May we have not got back online yet & its starting to show, almost no day goes by when we dont come up with a "we could find this out on the internet" comment.
I'm OK as I can use it at work (and my work use has increased a lot) but she has to grin & bear it.
I cant wait till August when I get to install ADSL. (but I guess I shall have to go fishing some more till then).

Well I need regular access to the net for business purposes, so even when I'm going to be on holiday I'm probably going to have to try to find a cyber cafe just to keep up to date.

As for discussion forums, I can give them up any time.

Not a problem.

Not at all.

Simple.

I just have to say "stop" and I can stop.

I could give up the internet at any time. Would it reduce the quality of my life? Yes it would. I'd have to speak to people and use telephone banking or actually go out and visit the bank!!

Not to mention all the things i look up and learn, this activity would vanish and therefore dumb myself down.

The internet is one of the best things out for many disabled people who cannot get about very easily and some would have no life at all without it.

Over the past few years I have had a much higher standard of living by having internet access, finding products which have saved me a fortune on prices I would have had to pay on the high street or by ringing around different companies. One of my best buys was four years ago when I got a 7 day self catering holiday for myself and the wife in the Canaries which costs us £42 and the accomodation was fantastic.

I just bought a new phone for £49.99 instead of the high street price of £99.99. Half price !

You hear stories about the internet corrupting peoples minds but I think it has taught me loads of things actually, and also is a great tool for keeping in contact.

I used to think that I couldn't live without the internet, but lately I'm thinking that I could.

If I didn't have BB access at home, I would go to my local library where you can use the 'net for free, then I'd just probably check my emails.

......When we go on holiday I don't miss it. If it's there I will use it. This forum has increased my internet use no end (don't look so surprised :D )
It's a nice tool but it is rather empty/hollow as you cannot touch anything on it, you are just an observer (no matter how/how much you interact with it)

Actually, A friend of mine was a member of a site British Airways used to sell late booked holidays. She bought 2 weekend return tickets to Venice for 50p (before you go asking for the address, it was a mistake on the site, but BA were going to honour the transaction). The irritating thing for her was that she had to sell the tickets, as when she worked it out, she and her boyfried didn't have enough money for spending money (wouldn't have been much fun in Venice without money for meals out etc.).
