I'm getting fed up with BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/3097533.stm
Has it occurred to them that some teenagers are trust worthy and not stupid? |
/me thinks i could get heated in this topic
*sarcasm mode no remember all young teenagers are dumb irresponsible people who shouldnt be trusted at all they all drink take drugs and steal  |

Teenagers always over estimate how well they can cope and always under estimate just how evil others can be.This NOT because they are stupid but because they LACK LIFE EXPERIENCE. However I take your point about media hysteria.I too have been wondering where the famous BBC impartiality in their news reporting has gone. Incog. |

 No I still agree with him:eek: Some parents feel their children should be given more freedom at that age. If they don't give out information or meet someone nothing could possibly happen. This is worse than hacker paranoirer. |

not wishing to sound cocky here but i always have been mature in the respect that i know whats right from wrong and what to do and not do in certain situations given that its you making the decisions its your fault if things go considerably pear shaped........... |

All this and other reports suggests is that Parents need to be aware of what their kids are doing on the PC so that they can help keep them from harm. |

also i am looking at it from a parents mindset what i think to seeing it the report people can react diffarently to things |
LMAO
Did you actually read that article? It is simply reporting on a survey carried out by the independent Schools Health Education Unit. They got their information directly from teenagers. How can that be classed as "blatant scaremongering"? |
It is the duty of teenagers to rebel and the duty of parents to let them do so safely.
I did not prevent my teens from accessing the internet at all.I just made sure that the only PC with access is in the living room where everyone can see what you are doing. I also asked very searching questions as to where anyone was going and who they were meeting and I always asked for addresses and phone numbers. I've never however listened to all the hysteria as I don't believe in a nanny state.I firmly believe that parents MUST accept responsibilty if their children go to meet a stranger that they have only 'met' in a chatroom. To hell with privacy when safeguarding your childern. Why do parents allow childern to use the internet unsupervised? It beats the heck outa me. Incog. |
Why does everyone assume people use the internet to meet people and swap personal information.
All we do here is debate issues and help with technical problems - what could be more wholesome than that. |

excuse me for thinking ahead  Quote:

but seriously why not if im having a conversation on MSN with my freinds i wouldnt want my mother peering down at me wondering whats being typed privacy is needed just like everyone else needs privacy whats diffarent if your mature enough i see no problem |
[rant]
it is scare mongering as they have added the dramatic effect that were all gonna die if we go online (a little overblown but not much further than what they say) I think its wrong what the media have done recently about this thing they have blown it completly out of proportion. whoopdie do if x many children are not supervised on the net. I for one have never been supervised for the past 6 years i've used it, im still here arnt i ? I wouldnt be without the places i chat through, it litterally opens up the world to my doorstep. I now have friends from all over the world, incl sweden, norway, netherlands, france, hungary, australia, new zealand, japan, malaysia, argentina, canada and the usa and others. So what because some person thinks he knows best for everyone that i should not be allowed to make such friends ? i think its rather ignorant of them to think that. Either that or there part of a conspiracy against everyone the british. until you get to know what its like in other countries you dont know just how badly we are treated by the rest of the world ! But that report is about the use being made by SOME young children and the fact that for SOME that use could lead to problems. In fact the report even highlights the more positive uses of the net for children such as education it just points out that as well as being a tool it carries some dangers too. |
Ok you win!You are so much smarter than every adult you ever met.
Incog. |

And I think that is uncalled for. I was only saying that not every teenager is a looking for trouble and irresponsible. |

If parents taking a more active interest in their kids as a result saves just one child all this reporting will have been worth it. If a few "lads" cant access the porn sites as readily as they can now as a result or have to stop hiding away in darkened rooms surfing all night, sorry I wont lose any sleep, and to be honest neither will they. |
I let my kids on the net unsupervised. But, they are 'net savey'.
They don't use chatrooms at all. If they want to chat to their friends it's done through MSN or Yahoo. I like giving my kids the freedom on the net and they like me for it. BTW, I have adult sites blocked by my firewall, but I doubt my kids would be looking for it. I also have a log of all the sites they have been to and all conversations over MSN / Yahoo. The understanding is that I won't ever read them until I have fair reason to. Kids can be perfectly safe on the internet as long as they see it as being outside in a park but blindfolded. Anyone you talk to could potentialy grab you and run away. OK, on the net it's not as easy to grab, but the ease of deception kinda balances things out. That's how I explained it to my kids and they have a damn good understanding of it. |

Agreed! Incog. |
I agree with Stuart, you explain the dangers, as I've said before they are not stupid.
Has anymore information been released about the american and that girl? The media has moved on to the next flavour of the week, the doctor kelly ordeal. Quote:

Well said Stuart !!!!!
A perfectly well balanced set of rules and freedoms. I applaud you and I bet your Kids will grow up to be good parents in their turn too as a result. |
