What kind of phobias do people have here?

I hate heights, deep water, and going through clouds.

lack of control - May be an odd one that, I dont need to be in control of a situation (Im not a control freak), I just can't stand beeing completeley out of control in any situation.
And another slightly odd one... Medium sized spiders (I love the tiny ones, and the massive ones but those ones inbetween like the biggest we get in this country freak me out)

Moths, well anything that is small and flies really. I think its the hairyness of moths which gets me!

I'm not to keen on heights (but did manage the London Eye a few weeks ago without too much of a panic) but until a short while ago even driving past an airport was a no-no. It's not a fear of flying - just the planes! I have even been known to run for cover if I see a low flying one. :Sprint:
I am trying to overcome my phobia now - I have set a target to be able to go on holiday abroad later this year - I've had a trip to Heathrow just to look :sick: and can drive on the M11 without freaking out when I pass Stanstead and Duxford! :D

I think you will find actually going on a plane, quite exiting, the acceleration during take-off will come as a surprise, for a start. Once flying, it isn't much different to being on a coach, except for the view, which is great, except over the sea, which is a bit boring. Landing is not as scarey as you might imagine - the worst bit is the pressure change affecting your ears, usually the cabin staff hand out boiled sweets, which can help to 'pop' your ears & equalise the pressure. :)

Funny thing - I don't like heights, but looking down out of a plane doesn't seem the same as, say, off the edge of a cliff - you'll love it :tu:

No phobias as such but the ocean unsettles me......something to do with watching Jaws when I was little

Spiders, dentists *shudder*, cows (was chased by some when I was younger) and any flying animal - birds, moths, butterflies etc.

Would love to know where these "irrational" phobias come from though!

Dunno if it's a phobia or not, but I can't stand clowns :eek: and never have liked them. I think it's the film of IT and the awful harlequin thing in Poltergeist - put it this way, I don't think I'm ever going to the circus!

I love heights, I love getting really really high and then leaning over and feel the adrenaline .

My fears ares snakes and also diseases like motor neuron deseases, HIV, and a painful from of cancer basically anything where when the doctor says you willl die from it and especially the first one where it is painful and will mean that the last few weeks people have to wash you and such taking all all dignity

Cotton wool; I don`t know why, it`s something I`ve been afraid of since childhood. The thought of it right now sends shivers through me.

Not bothered by spiders at all, in fact have picked them up if they look friendly :D :D

It happens all the time.You speak to people on a regular basis once twice a week and get to know them and their life history.They in return cannot ever remember the smallest detail about you and you have to repeat everything that you have told them time and time again.It is that gives me a sort of phobia about joining any organisation.Started when I took my kids to mother and toddler groups and when I joined the National Childbirth Trust.Found it just goes on and on.

Some might say it's clique issue but I think it is just rudeness.

I have a few but my latest one is the phobia about petrol pumps!


others are spiders, the sound of bees/wasps, crowds.

Caves & similar dank/ dark holes in the ground (even Wookey Hole which is huge and illuminated gives me the shudders - but I have been) and clowns 'cos I think they are sinister

I have flown - twice - and managed not to get hysterical although it was a near thing. It's not the flying that bothers me particularly (ok well it does then!) but actually SEEING a plane flying past and having to get close to one - I'm sitting here now on the verge of panic just thinking about it! :Yikes:
When I went to Cyprus a few years back we had to walk across the tarmac to the plane - I had to be carried inside! :rofl:

oops - sorry, I didn't realise you had flown already, I didn't mean to sound so patronising :dozey:

I suppose I got 'weaned' early - my first plane flight was apparently made slung from the roof in a carry cot, aged 18 months. I don't remember that, but since then, especially with my dad being in the RAF, I have been as much a fan of planes as you are of TVR or Aston Martin.

I suppose thats the thing about a real phobia, other people find it hard to understand, but I know it is something you can't just be talked out of.

Anyway I hope you enjoy your holiday, despite your fear :)

Wasps (stung once as a kid, sat on a not quite dead one in shorts ... what it was doing wearing shorts, I'll never know).

And in the weird category . . . . . . . . beetroot! Aaaaaaaaargh! I can honestly say I find it so disgusting in taste, smell and texture, I cannot stand to look at it (red pickled stuff in jars) :Yikes:

Interesting fact that most of you probably dont want to know.....
Ive got that disorder that makes the die from beetroot come out in my pee, not many people get it (Quite scary the first time, thought I was peeing blood :eek: )
I also get that thing with asparagus, that less then 1/10 people have, where you can smell it stronger after you have been for a pee than you could when you where eating the stuff :eek:

Well now that ive grossed most of you out, I'll get me coat :)

The worst thing in my opnion is the take off as thats where the most things can go wrong, as with the landing too.
Once you are up there, you are cruising all the way.

public speaking, celery and labradores spring to mind, but lately my daughters phobia has been passed on to me. she always scared off wasps after being stung when younger, each year gets worse as summer comes, now the phobias extended to anything that flies near her ....... and this has now been passed to me :mad:


oh and just remembered another one that makes me go mental at the thought ........chinese burns :cry:

Good thing you've never flownin the back of an RAF 'Fat Albert' then, when they make a tactical landing. I remember the landing in Sarajevo airport, when I was on UN duties there. Power on steep decent (about 30 or 40 deg. decent, doing 200-205 knots) on short final, then slapping the C-130 into the tarmac doing about 160-180 knots, and then throwing all four engines into reverse and braking HARD. Ended up with all sorts of kit flying around the cargo hold. Ouch. I swear we didnt land, we crashed. :disturbd:

i'm not overly keen on wasps..... and wasn't impressed that my long hot soak in the bath was disturbed last night by a wasp trapped in the bathroom :(

my mother is scared of anything that flies, especially wasps...when i was young she was in the garden sunbathing on a sunbed, she saw something fly past, freaked, and ended up rolling backwards off the sun bed which folded in half, was rather funny, especially as it was only a butterfly

Never been on a plane or any other flying device for that matter - don't really fancy it. I'm a bit of a nervous passenger regardless of the mode of transport. As for wasps - right with you there. Not that long ago I found a queen sat on my air fresher in the bathroom. I had a fit. I always know where the fly killer is :D Creepy crawlies and non-stinging flying things don't bother me too much so long as they're in small quantities. I once had to tackle a good few hundred house flies at my mate's flat :disturbd: Never seen anything like it - real horror movie stuff. Red ants I avoid. I do have a problem with escalators in that I'm scared of using them and much prefer lifts and stairs. Usually it's a deep breath and I leap onto it, hang onto the hand rail for dear life, then leap off the other end :rolleyes: Food wise - well other than 'nanas I can't stand bones and gristle in food. Makes me chuck. I can't go on eating neither - the meal goes in the bin. Oh and mould - the really furry ones. Usually gets me shrieking like a big girl :rolleyes:

i have a fear of walking over water on a bridge, i get the feeling i will be blown off the side and will drown...

suppose by that definition i also have a fear of drowning ;)

I think the world land speed record would be in serious danger.

I've also got a "thing" abouts toys coming to life, so ridiculous I know. I've never been able to watch Chucky or Bride Of Chucky not even from behind the settee. Also that bit in Poltergist when the clown doll comes to life :erm: :eek: :Yikes: :Sprint:

Mines heights. Trying everything to combat it such as going up the Eiffel tower, CN Tower, KL Tower, London Eye, Bucket in the roof of a cave but i still get a jelly feeling in my knees. Even get that feeling sitting in the gods at a west end theatre.

Everyone is scared of that sort of thing from time to time.

Actually, I did have a bit of a phobia about computers (I know, it's ironic as now I work on them for a living and love it). I think this is probably due to several films I saw when I was younger that all involved meglomaniac computers taking over the world. Of course, that sort of thing couldn't happen now? Could it? :disturbd:

Me too - but heres the thing - planes, no problem window seat and all - go figure.

And why is it that i always want to challenge my fear, yet never overcome it? I managed the second platform on the Eiffel tower then said - no way. Was recently on top of the tower on the big hill in Prague (if anyones ever been there) though, and my knees were knocking like crazy.

Even got a headache from the shock when i came back down, i would do it again - but it wont help my fear.

i have no fear of heights in planes either. I think its because you dont have any height perspective as its too high. I didnt go up the tower on the hill in Prague but i did go up the communications tower there, that wasnt too bad as it was totally enclosed.

I went up to the 99th (top) floor of a building in Shanghai - awesome! Fortunately I have no fear at all of heights, but any sort of dark hole in the ground gives me the creeps

I fully agree there, Just got back from crete and the view from 36,000 feet is pretty cool when the sun rises below you and the alps peak out from a thick blanket of cloud.

My phobias, Spiders and Dams.

Dams dunnoi why, I just cant walk across them, but can go over them in a car.
Strange. But I also know a bloke who is petrified of toilet cisterns.

I actually get a painful headache when up at the top of a tall building, ive been told its a stress headache due to fear :disturbd:
I remember trying to go on a very high up water slide in Ibiza (anybody who has been to the waterpark by the airport will know wich one im talking about), I got halfway up and then had to walk back down like a total wuss, the staircase scared me more than the slide :shocked:
