Unknown number block on ntl?
After receiving many irritating phone calls with numbers which are 'unavailable', I am becoming frustrated.
On BT, you can have a block on all unknown numbers which are incoming. Can you do this on ntl? And if so, are numbers from extensions masked? Normally, if you dial 1471, these numbers are unknown also. Are these numbers blocked on this system? |
Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
It's called Annonymous Caller Rejection - give CS a ring tomorrow and they'll do the biz for you.

*227# to activate #227# to deactivate *#227# to check if operational Some numbers can still get through without leaving a number ie if from a switchboard etc but they will come through as "number unavailable" rather than "number withheld". The system is not 100% accurate. |
Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
Some numbers (overseas call centres especially) have numbers that are 'unavailable' and not withheld.
Unfortunately ACR doesn't block these types of calls, it only blocks calls that are actually withheld. As Russ said CS can add this on free of charge for you. If you are getting calls which are silent for a few seconds and then the line goes dead it's probably a call centre of some description. You can register with the telephone preference service which should stop these by going to www.tpsonline.org.uk or dialling 0845 07 007 07 |

Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
Ok, I'm confused! In a digital spy forum, a guy said:
---------------------- To activate ACR on your NTL line simply pick up the handset and dial 1478, then hang up. To disactivate, similarly dial 1479. On BT lines you can dial *227# to activate and #227# to disactivate. Hope this helps. Regards Belial_co_uk PS some may think this is a scam or some form of illegal hack. It is not. Visit http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/network_codes.htm or http://www.telewest.co.uk/html/tele...yourservice.htm for more info on this and other codes you can use on your network. ---------------- And I am on an ntl line. It goes on to say: --------------------- This Service Cost's £3.33 per month on BT!!!!!!! --------------------- |
Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
It's ok, I downloaded a user guide from the ntl site.
Stop Anonymous Calls To stop calls from people who are deliberately barring their number dial * 227 #. To cancel this feature and reaccept calls from deliberately barred numbers, dial # 227 #. To check if the feature is in operation dial *#227 #. |

do note, though, that she did say 'in the NW', which you are - the same advice may not apply in other areas ;) |
Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
The problem with figuring out which code to use stems from the fact that the NTL network was setup by a variety of different companies, which were later bought by other companies.
As an example, someone in London may dial *227# to activate ACR, but half a mile down the road, someone else would be dialling *65 to activate it. Always best to trust the people in the know in that region. Well done, Debsy. :) |
Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
SO for those of us down on the south coast of Hampshire what would be the code(if any)?
Incog. |

Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
ex C&W - using ACR, but I can't remember what code does it ... or turns it off or checks - can anyone save me digging out the old welcome pack?
And yes, ACR seems to be a free feature across most (all?) of the NTL network, while BT charge .... for a change, 1 up to NTL. |

however this hasn't been added to the lines as in the NW region so if you haven't got it on your line then it would need to be added by CS Matth - same codes for you too if you're ex C&W |

For me it shows as: *227# = enable ACR #227# = disable ACR *#227# = check ACR BT also use these '227' codes. If you have a phone with letters next to the numbers you'll see that the letters 'ACR' are on numbers '227' ;) other possible codes I have found are: 1478 = enable ACR 1479 = disable ACR Just try them. The nice lady in the exchange will tell you if she doesn't recognise the code. Some more details on ACR here: http://www.ainslie.org.uk/callerid/cli_faq.htm#Q_17 |
Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
Thank you!!
Incog. :) |
Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
The codes it gives are the 227 ones, but *#227# says the service is unavailable - I KNOW I turned it on, as for quite some time, I was getting calls for the previous holder of the number! - and it cut some of the junk.

Re: Unknown number block on ntl?
A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to find my way through the NTL CS maze to a helpful operator who explained how to enable & disable ACR. I mislaid the codes after turning it on, & then failed to find an NTL operator to help me turn it off.
More or less by hit & miss I discovered that for my postcode (DA7 6JS) the codes are *65# to enable & #65# to disable. The DA7 postcode prefix covers a very wide area, so I doubt if *65# etc. is applicable to every suffix. NTL must have listings of ACR codes against postcodes available to their CS operators & it can't be beyond their competence (or can it?) to publish them, rather than leave it to their customers to slowly assemble them from odd clues left around, or take on the almost impenetrable CS system. I am an ex-C&W customer, & to be fair their CS 'team' was even worse than NTL. |
