User name and password????

I currently connect to ntl broadband 600kbs through usb, as i didnt have an ethnet port when they connected it up for me... i wasnt given a username and password and also wasnt given a setup disk or anything of that nature...

when i want to go on the internet i just open IE and it works, when i want to reinstall broadband i just plug it into my usb and without setting anything up it just works automatically.

i have just got a ethnet port so i tried connecting my braodband connection to it and when i open IE it goes to a bright green screen asking for my username and password, which i havent been given...

also on ther site they state that you get a free email address with ntl, i havent been given one as far as i know,
thay also say you get some free web space... same with that.

i connect through my tv set top box

could some one help me out... am i using a different service or what? i emaild NTL about 4 weeks ago about this and they didnt even reply... i gave them my number like stated and they didnt even call me! if i dont manage to ge it working i will probably ring them but does anyone know what is going on??

Thankyou

Ryan

I will try and sort this for you.

It sounds as though you're in an ex-cable & Wireless area, if so, then I can help.

PM me your account details and I'll look into it for you.

You would have been given the username and password on your first registration, but if you don't have these details then you need to speak to ntl.

try calling t/s on 0845 650 0125... no calls waiting at the moment because of the football ;)

as soon as you have the details fill them in and it will then register the computer with ntl

what should i say when i ring up and what info will they give me?
also would it still work as they connected the internet to my old pc, but i got a new one and i am using it on the new one

also would it benefit me in any way changing to ethnet than usb?

They will give you a PID number and a password.

When you try to get on the web, you should be presented with a 'Computer provisioning log on screen'. If you don't get that, try typing
start.ntl
in the browser's address bar. then just follow the instructions on screen.

Ethernet is generally more stable and a teensy bit faster than USB (though the average user is unlikely to notice the speed), but if it's working fine as it is, then leave it.

More info on ethernet here:

no need for the abuse thank you. The data protection act says that information can only be given to the account holder subject to satifying of certain criteria.

I am sure the "******" had a good reason for not giving you the infromation- infact your PMs to me confirmed to me that you were not the account holder, how would your feel if someone broke the law and gave your personal information to someone else?

no need of the abuse, it is people like you who tempt me to leave this site. I am not going to break the law so i can help one person who i don't know from adam.

Even if they did give you the account number and address you should STILL not divulge passwords etc. You should validate the persons identity using information that is not printed on the bill. For example a telephone password, mothers maiden name or the answer to a secret question.

Otherwise anyone could pick up an NTL bill and then get access to that persons account.

as if people read them things!! man anyway you cant define a word like that, just because some people wont like that word dont mean its wrong to type it! a word is a word it can not be classified

If you speak to us at tech support then we'll help anyone with a problem, not just account holder, but wont discuss anything account realted with anyone but the account holder.

The guys are not taking things seriously, they are answering you in a mature manner. You may need to grow up a little before posting in adult forums?

Everyone is not turning against you, its just the way you reacted to having your post edited by a mod for something they dont think is suitable for thier forums.

Just relax on here a little more, and post a little more sensibly and youlll get on fine :)

well isnt it strange that when i rang ntl last time when there was a problem they helped me, they rang me on my mobile phone and helped me with the internet and that included account details as long as i have permission and i have proof of that they dont seem to mind!!
and also that word i used was not related to you at all, so why bother about it?! i was purely nice to everyone before, and i continue to do so!!

no i want to have a sensible discussion about this. it isnt the fact that i was bothered having it edeted it is just when he eddited it he seemed to turn against me!!

i may i just say something....

you cant go around 24/7 censoring everything in the world so people can not see it, soon lots of things will be accepted. im not saying this is right or wrong i am just saying it because this will happen and that theres more to life than censoring words. and i understand that that is the forums t&c, but i have done nothing to go against that only by accident that i misspealt a word!! or used a word that can be found in a theasourus. people do things in life that they wish they didnt but it still doesnt mean they should be neglected, or turned away... furthermore they should be helped and encouraged not turned against!! and i would like to be friends with people on here but because i wrote a word that is neglected and i gave my own opinion that isnt going to stop me

Have a read of this Data Protection Act

this is why i will not give you the account details. As i said in my earlier post, i am not going to risk my job and an unlimited fine for acting illegally. Someone else may have discussed the account details with you, that is their problem.

I find your abuse of staff unnecessary- how would you like it if i started dishing out your personal information to other people?

Why don't you just get your mum to ring and stop moaning on here about it.

In your first post you said "i wasnt given a username and password " this is personal information about the account holder which you are not entitled too.

You are not the account holder

Well said MB. Your not the account holder, its not your service so get your mummy to fix it :)

I think your forgetting you named the thread "Username/Password"

Have a read of my reply to your PM, and again, calm down with the responses, noone is trying to get at you, just have been trying to help all along, and the responses direct at you have only been prompted with your replys to a sensible suggestion.

family relationship? remind me how that is relevant. you obviously didn't read the link i sent you to the data protection act. Find me the section that said information can be given to family members.

You WILL change your tone or action will be taken against you.

Irregardless of what your mother does or does not know, SHE is the account holder and unless she contacts ntl directly and gives you permission to act on her belhalf, you do not have any rights in this matter. You don't seem to want to accept it but it's the law.

Data protection act doesnt even allow husband and wife to be given each others information. Perhaps you should understand things before spouting off.

br3ach they are ganging up on me i only asked a simple question! i could ask on another forum and there would be no problems...

so does this mean that i cant accept help for anything computer related if my computer is registered with someone else? NO!

Russ 25-06-2004 20:13

Re: User name and password????

NTL advise about computer problems, they advise you on the internet connection. This is registered on someone's account. If you are not that person then they could be prevented from assisting you due to the data protection act.

All it would take is for your mother to write a letter to ntl saying she gives consent for you to act on her behalf, could you not arrange that?

poolking 25-06-2004 20:13

Re: User name and password????

rreed87,

No one is ganging up on you. You didn't help yourself by being abusive to people trying to help you.

I suggest you read the DPA (data protection act) as suggested and also re-familiarise yourself with the rules of this forum.

yes i understand that, but the advice given to you suggested that the problem was caused by the device that is connected to the service having been changed, as you dont have the username and password which you pointed out yourself you will not be able to reconfigure. Also pointed out to you this is information that is protected by the data protection act.

All people have done is advise you of the facts in an adult manner. However your reaction has been less than adult.

Im sure people are still happy to help you out, but i do thing the NTL employees (not me) that have tried to help you deserve some sort of appology and everyones opinion and input to your problem should be respected.

So why not calm down, and start again.

br3ach 25-06-2004 20:14

Re: User name and password????

rreed87 you will see if you read the thread over again that it started fine with TWO people offering their spare time whilst at work to help you out. NOONE ganging up on you then.

Then you returned to the thread posting a word that was not acceptable to the board. They removed it. NOTHING unfair there either, and they just gave you a warning that laguage cannot be used like that on this board as members of the board and youngsters here could be offended by it. PERSONALLY I couldnt care about the word, but there are rules.

Then everything got out of hand because of your immature and over the top responses to everyone elses advice on trying to calm you down.

Now this thread has just turned into one big argument and is getting nowhere.

Seriously m8, just let it drop and start a fresh.

Russ, the DPA does not require written authority for someone to act on their behalf. It is acceptable to have your identity validated by telephone and for you to give authorisation that way.

This would help sort the issue faster.

I know but IIRC correctly this is the method that ntl recognise - they won't aceept the account holder giving verbal permission apparently - it needs to be in writing.
