Firefox 0.9

A release canditate for firefox 0.9 has been released: get it here

You may wish to back up the profile folder.

Which is in: C:/documents and setting/[your username]/Application data/Firefox or pheonix/

OR windows/application data - for 98

I'll post again when the complete release is ready and I'll whip together some instructions for optimising firefox to specific system specs.

The zip file attached contains user.js files (to be placed into your firefox profile folder) for various system/internets specifications. Read the read me for instructions.

I made this using information from this thread.

To eliminate complications you may wish to wait until the full release version of firefox 0.9 is released and installed before you start experimenting.

People are welcome to proof read it and send me corrections. :dunce:

Actaully they were all designed for 0.8. I'm told the version number should make little difference.

You need to make sure hidden folders are shown.
To do this open My Computer then go to Tools>Folder Options>View.

I'd say that's high end but, try both and see which you like best.

I 'upgraded' Firefox to the latest 0.9 release yesterday only to find that the 'back' & 'forward' buttons are disabled in the browser totally (javascript previous page links no longer work, buttons on keyboard or mouse no longer work, etc) but after uninstalling & putting 0.8 back on, it now works fine again.

I have to say that the new theme is terrible.
It's not too bad on XP but when you switch to the Windows Classic theme it looks awful.

That's why I like the linux version, it picks up and uses the system gtk theme so looks good. I've not tried 0.9 yet, they haven't done a source tarball and pulling the uncompressed cvs tree on 150k is painfully slow.

I've seen reports of other people with ad-block not working with 0.9.

The worst problem that I have been having is that they mispackaged the source code for 0.9 by putting the thunderbird source in instead...doh!!! :)

You need to install the lastest version of adblock - just export your block list and uninstall then reinstall. If that doesn't work copy your bookmarks cookies and passwords and wipe the profile folder.

It's got some nice new features with the login by url thing eg http://user:pass@somewebsite.com it checks with you first that you wanted to login and then subsiquent pages it checks that your not being decieved and such. Nice feature but it wont trust a website so every page you goto in the secure connection it keeps asking you over and over.

Both myself and my housemate have changed the theme already as soon as we installed it !

Havent had any problems with ad block as i dont use it, in my experience no need it's built in popup blocker does a good enough job.

Isn't the adblock different to the popup blocker? The adblock stops the ads, like what used to be at the top of this site and the popup stops pop-ups.

Re: Firefox 0.9

I finally finished building it, had to work through several problems but got there in the end. All I can say is ...Zooooooooom! It's that much faster than 0.8. I don't know whether it's because I built a highly optimised version or it's just better generally but the startup times are about half of what I had with 0.8 and I don't know what people were complaining about in the switch from IE thread about the rendering times...it's extremely fast at rendering a page.

The only problem that I have been having is that when I download and install some extensions it won't restart and I have to uninstall the extensions manually.

The easiest thing to tweak is the nglayout.initialpaint.delay, just edit the user.js file from my optimisations and alter the value. The smaller this is the faster the page will initially appear, however if the page is not completely rendered it will then take slightly longer to finish. It's up to personal preference if you want to see a partial page sooner or see the completed page. The slower the computer the higher this number is although lowering it will not harm anything, just play about.

You can set it to 0 however this can cause flickering as it renders a page with different sized images in columns.

the best values to try are:
750
500
250
0

It's quite fast on mine, but you could try prefetching it (xp only). Change the shortcut target to has

/prefetch:1

at the end

I.E.
Code:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" /prefetch:1

Another thing...

I looked in the help, but couldn't see anything....Is there an easy way to get it to open a new tab when you click on a link, instead of having it open in a new window? (rather than right-clicking on a link & selecting "open in new tab"?)

Use CTRL + click or press the middle mouse button.

BTW Downquark, prefetch is only for special pages, it should have no difference to startup time.

I think downquark's talking about XP's application pre-fetching, not page prefetching.

http://iamnotageek.com/articles.php?...=prefetch_apps

Quote:

Prefetch Applications to make them load quicker

If you have lots of RAM like I do then you can prefetch a number of applications by using the /prefetch:1 switch. This will load the application into your RAM for MUCH faster startup times. Be careful on how many programs you do this with because it'll eat up your RAM if you do it too much.

Right click on any shortcut you want to speed up and select properties. Look in the Target. At the very end of this add /prefetch:1 to it.

For anyone interested in optimized builds, this page has some optimized binaries for windows users, you need to select the one that is right for your cpu. I've had good success building my own optimized version and do think it runs faster than a non-opt build. The only thing I'll say is that the ones with the -O3 flag (highest compiler [gcc] optimisation) might be unstable, mine is with O2, O3 kept segfaulting on me and I've seen reports from other people with similar results.

IIRC (not an xp user) you have to change the shortcut target to:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" /prefetch:1

not that the path is in speech marks, but the prefetch:1 part is outside. From the error that you are getting it looks like you have all/none of it in speech marks.

I had the same problem when upgrading from 0.8 to 0.9... uninstall firefox from the control panel, delete the mozilla folder and run a reg cleaner (if you dont have one, email me and i will send you one). Then download and install the latest firefox version from mozilla.org and it should install properly. This should also be picked up by spyware blaster.

As for the pm box, that is a feature of using firefox, when you hover over the private messages link it will show in white. It is less annoying than the flashing red IMO.

And i still haven't had time to reply to your email but i am getting there ;)

There is no need to run a reg cleaner.
Just uninstall, delete the directory then install the newer version.
Don't delete anything in Application Data because this will delete your profile.

BTW - the PM blink hack doesn't work in Mozilla because whoever wrote it only tested it in IE.
It is not a "feature" of Mozilla, it just doesn't work properly... :p:
When I've got the time I'll rewrite it properly and to standards.

Permission to worry you yet again

I have done every thing that has been suggested I have removed Firefox and made sure that it is gone but when I re-install ver 1.9.1 which shows as ver 0.9.1 when you view help/about on the newly installed version which still has the little red exclamation mark bottom right telling me Critical Updates available which want to load 0.9.1 would you believe, any clues to whatââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s going on??????? If all fails read the instructions: It is strongly recommended that you uninstall any previous version of Firefox first. Installing over the top of an older version may cause unpredictable problems.

This I had done three times, I found it to be the profile file that was causing the problem,(the one firefox can't see) this can be located: C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

I deleted the profile folder, reinstalled Firefox and hey presto the little red exclamation box was gone. The problem with Spyblaster is still the same it reports Mozilla Firefox is not installed Dââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢oH This seems to be a problem with the profile folder, but I know it's there. Question has anybody got 0.9.1 loaded and is using Spyblaster, is it doing the same?????? is it something thant can't be fixed with this beta version.

Mal 01-07-2004 10:44

Re: Firefox 0.9

Goldini, did you have any previous versions of firebird/firefox? If you did, did you delete the previous profile?

Just that with me, spywareblaster recognises firefox, but when you look in the cookies exceptions, there's nothing there, when on ff0.8, there were exceptions put there by SpywareB.

With FF0.8, the profile folder was still called pheonix, but with FF0.9, it's now called firefox, so spyware may still be set to check for the old name. I haven't deleted the pheonix folder, so that may be why it's showing ff but not actually doing what it should.

That's my theory. I don't know if it's right or not.

Thanks for the info, yes I did have ver 8 and 9 which I deleted I also did a reg scan and deleted all the FF bits re-booted and reloaded FF. I then looked on the FF web site and read the instructions, while it did not say delete the file in fact it said if you delete this file all your FF setting will be lost. This I did and it got rid of the new updates pling. It would seem you may be right about Spyblaster looking for the wrong name as FF ver 0.9.1 is beta

Re: Firefox 0.9.1 Beta

With FireFox I was forbiden to view, so ok I have IE6 and I get:

Your browser is unable to display the Live Match Reports feature. The Live Match Reports feature is optimized for Internet Explorer version 5.5 (or greater). Please download Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 (or greater) to experience this portion of the Web site. If your browser meets this requirement and you are still unable to display this feature, your connection to the Internet may be behind a firewall that prevents the display of this page.

Now call me thick :dunce: but most sensible people these days will be behind a firewall apart from the DH who wrote the code for the site.

A few months ago I got an email telling me that the name Wimbledon is copyright and I must remove the information from my old school web site. It also went on to say they have no records of our school supplying ball boys. Funny that as we were on radio 4 on Saturday New Balls Please!;)

The name "Wimbledon" is a part of Surrey though!
Hmm...maybe I'll just copyright the name "Cardiff" and make my millions in rent.

But to do this you would need to become a DH! :D

I want to use two profiles but what would be nice is having two icons on the desktop which both open firefox in different profiles. Any ideas on how to implement this?

Re: Firefox 0.9

I don't know how to automatically switch between them but I know you can modify the shortcut to force the profile manager to appear on startup.
Just right click on the shortcut, select properties and in the target box put "-ProfileManager" on the end so it becomes something like:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager

Yeah I already did that, it just seems a little inconvenient to have to select it.

To answer my own question you can use following syntax in the shortcut:

"[Firefox directory]\firefox.exe" -profile "[profile directory]"

e.g.
Code:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profile "C:\Documents and Settings\[NAME]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[profilename]"

At the time I was trying to get some tickets for some of the old boys so I bit my tong, two weeks later when I got in the same week a email saying they could not offer any tickets as they had all been allocated. The other email was the one regarding having no record of our boys ever being Ball Boys and that the name Wimbledon was a registered trade mark and a request to remove the photos and information from my site so yes he got quite a mouthful along with him being anal retentive regarding his archive. A week later I got a nice email with useful information for the Wimbledon page on our site, which is still up.

Back on topic
IE6 now can display the live match reports (wonder if they look at CF) but Firefox is still unable to view the page.

Re: Firefox 0.9

I just installed firefox to see what it's like and overall I think it is much more pleasant to browse with than IE, it has no frills and always asks you if you want stuff done (you can turn this off). I currently don't have it as my default browser but I may well do in the future.

My IE seems to not load up images randomly, since using firefox those problems have dissapeared.

Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox has a flaw:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1621463,00.asp
The fix is here, just click the install link and you're done:
http://update.mozilla.org/extensions...nfo.php?id=154

EDIT: Turns out that this is a flaw in the WindowsXP OS which is fixed in SP2, not a flaw in Moz.

Also, I found this article interesting, seeing as it's on a Microsoft site:

Hi Mal

When you say adblock isn't working for you, do you mean the functions aren't working or you can't install the extension ? I had a similar problem of getting the extension to install, so tried a modified version (apparently there are 4 versions of adblock) I tried the version by xenomorph, which can be found in this thread on the mozilla forums http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=89308

Regards.

I can install/uninstall it okay, but it doesn't block any of the ads and the options when you right click do not work. Even putting the address in manually doesn't work.

I'll have a look at that link when I get home. :tu:

It was a good extension as well.

ok mal, will look forward to hearing if you get it sorted. As a heads up, I don't know if you are aware, but adblock does have it's own dedicated forum that you might want to browse through. It can be found here http://adblock.mozdev.org/forum.html/no_wrap

Regards.

The xenomorph version wasn't there anymore, but one of the posts lower down gave this link. I got the nightly build 39 and that is working for me now :D :tu: Thanks for that!

Mozilla are showing that FF0.9.2 is now available. According to this link, the only change seems to be what Richard mentioned below. There's also a Mozilla 1.7.1 version out as well.

Adblock (link not provided due to the influence if alcohol) will help with that. I believe that it's back on the list of extensions.

Wow, when I clicked on the last link in Richards post, Firefox automatically opened a page with a link to a Moz Extension that fixes the bug.
