Webhosting for FREE

Have a look at http://www.thefreeserver.com

You get:

  1. PHP, PERL, MYSQL, ENSIM and all the technical things you could use.
  2. Automatic submission to all major search engines.
  3. Built in PowerTools that allow easy setup of PHPNuke, Oscommerce, phpbb and more!
  4. 2,000 MB of Disk Space.
  5. 60GB of Bandwidth
  6. 1,000 Mysql Databases, 1,000 Subdomains, 1,000 Sub Users, 1,000 Email Accounts
  7. POP3/SMTP/IMAP Support
  8. ClamAV Antivirus Software
  9. Antispam Software
WHAT YOU MUST DO
You must put some kind of content on your site and the advertising code on your website within 5 days of signing up. (The ad code will be emailed to you.)
You must have at least 7 views average of the advertisements per day on your website after 5 days of signing up. These views can be your own visits if your website is new.(non-unique views). If you fall below this requirement, an email reminder will be sent to you.

And best of all it cost $0.00

Inferring that you need 7 unique ad clicks per day when your site is established, most people hate banner ads/popups so good luck

I think that people are very quick to jump down Wayne's throat with criticism (or negativity at least). I myself have attempted to offer some ahem, constructive guidance in the past.

This is probably due to his boundless optimism, and agreed, there are always pitfalls, the ideas won't always work and there are limitations to these 'free' services. However, for once, why don't we give the guy a break, and see what he comes up with.

So come on Wayne, show us what you can do with all this stuff.

I am all for a free ride but as always there are hidden catches reminds me of a host i know who offered something similar to peeps the first 2 or 3 weeks all is fine they are getting the required number of hits on site then the host ups the number and says if he does not make these then either he will lose the site or start paying for it this went on for a while in the end the figures were 10000+ unique hits per day or start to pay te full price i think it was in the region of £30 per month they wanted if the quota was not met but hey if Wayne can make a go of it then the best of luck i sincerly hope he does well he deserves it for the sheer determination he is showing to get his site on the World Wide Web only real advice i can give him is read all the fine print.

It means that it's necessary to use capital letters (upper case) and non-capital letters (lower case) where indicated

eg if a password was TGabC2ptG it has to be entered exactly like that putting in tgabc2ptg or TGABC2PTG won't work.

The password would have to be entered in the same way in which you signed up for it.

Well now folks I have to go with Alan on this. You all give WNA a lot of grief but he is still quite young you know.We all have to start somewhere.I have a 15 year old of my own and I hope you would treat him in a gentlemanly manner if he visited this site.

Mind if you didn't you'd be hearing from me.

So as one who is a bit useless at the 'internet' I can only say there are no stupid questions just impatient people.

Incog :)

I agree, And sometimes stupid answers.

Don't let them get to you Wayne. We all learn at our own pace, and no one knows everything.

No day in which you learn something new is ever totally wasted. ;)

is there an English (UK) option? - if so try that.

remember any user name etc, has to match exactly what is sent, Alanmelon had it right :tu: :)

- so peppie should be peppie

- Peppie would be Peppie

- PeppiE would be PeppiE

- but I think it is the language setting that is the problem :)

Sorry to be a pain but its English US only. :erm:

It's one of several things then;

- Wrong username
- Wrong password
- Wrong domain name (remember not to add the www. to the start)
- Your account hasn't been activated yet?

Double check all the above with any confirmation e-mails you might have.

in that case, you may need to set your keyboard to be an 'US' one, for the login to work ?

- I am not recommending this, btw :erm:

- I would be very careful, iiwy, Wayne, not to 'put you down', but to try & curb your enthusiasm, so you don't get burnt, not just flamed :)

No, homealone - it's all the same, the server doesn't care how you spell Wayne does it? :D

So if im just copying and pasting my details into the fields this should work? But its not.

Just thought....you do have a domain name registered don't you? :erm:

You didn't mention that as one of the inclusions with your hosting!

I shan't rain on your parade or anything, all I will say, is don't put anything on there that you don't have a copy of, or that you couldn't bear to lose, i.e. data, pictures, whatever - if for some reason you don't meet their requirements for a free site, they may lock you out, and not release your stuff until you pay the charge - it's a particuarly nasty/underhand way of screwing money out of people, pretty much on the same level as black mail (if you ask me)

if it is password protected & case sensitive, then I assumed it would ??

Could it be the fact that the site takes 24hrs to come online.

Are you sure the www should be there mate?

Lots of these companys use sub-domains.... the subdomain would take the place of "www".

I have sent them an email asking for assistance.

This is really starting to get to me. I copy and paste exactly as they appear in the email into the fields requested. (The Details)

I then set up my webserver and got this message "The server name or address could not be resolved." What now?

Re: Webhosting for FREE

Juding by the details you've given us, to fill that form in you'd need;

Login : (The username you gave, or they gave you)
Domain : madgamer_4.thefreeserver.net
Password : (That password they provided you in the email)

As homealone said, these may be case sensitive so make sure they're exactly the same.

forget 'free' and pay for a domain name & 'proper' hosting. - imo. Mine costs me around £2 a month.......... - that's nearly (if not really), free :)

<edit> sorry - wild willy barret moment :D

Have they definately confirmed activation of your account yet?

Also check the following;
- Make sure you're not cutting and pasting any blank spaces or html code with your password/username.
- You may need to try variations on the domain name, eg 'thefreeserver.net' or just 'madgamer_4'
