The Anti-Big Brother Thread!! :D

Ok, people in the Big Brother thread don't seem to want people making negative comments about the show in there, so how about a thread where you *can* do so. (Of course anyone from the BB thread is *entirely* welcome to post positive counter-opinions in this one :) )

NB This is *NOT* just a general "slag off BB" thread, I'd hope it can be a discussion of what's wrong with the whole concept of "reality TV".

BB was interesting from the point of being a new form of TV when it first happened although I always found it *way* too boring to watch (paint drying, grass growing etc)

Now, in a desperate attempt to justify its existence they're promising lots of "nasty stuff" and "stunts", presumably to get people to watch simply to laugh at the people making themselves look like idiots.

But do we *really* need this sort of thing? What exactly is it doing that hasn't been done already? From an interesting and innovative idea IMO it's now reached the stage "flogging a dead horse". We have had, seemingly every possible version of it, culminating in more and more extreme versions such as The Osbornes or There's Something About Miriam, so what will one more series of BB actually achieve?

Should there be more "reality shows" or should TV producers try to create something else new and original instead of just re-working a tired old forumula?

How can they promise anything will happen when it is supposed to be a reality tv show which to me means no outside interference whatsoever otherwise it just becomes yet another staged show.

I think I'd rather wash my tackle vigorously with a Surform than watch any of Big Brother, I hate this time of year, commandeering C4 and E4 with complete tripe pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Re: The Anti-Big Brother Thread!! :D

I normally end up watching it out of some kind of appalled fascination. Not before it's 2-3 weeks in though, as it's even worse at the start when everyone's playing to the cameras. Even so, I find it uncomfortable viewing. Essentially we are meant to derive entertainment and pleasure out of a dozen young adults making complete ar$es of themselves. Never mind that that is what they have chosen to do - I can't help feeling a little sad about it all.

thought you said you were no good at DIY :D

The same goes for me, though, BB, The Salon, I'm a has-been, get me out of here etc, etc, - they are all just so boring - how we went from 'fly on the wall documentary' to this pile of poo, I will never know. :(

I loathe Big Brother.
I have a problem though, I end up watching it! Its not my fault its my girlfriend....she turns it on and if its there i watch it. I remember having breakfast watching people asleep in bed. Its terrible. sucks up my life force. Big Brother takes away what should be normallity, ie sitting chatting to my partner about the day ahead and gives you something that is abnormal.

Well my daughter who I love dearly moved into her new house a couple of weeks ago, I do miss her but every cloud as they say, my silver lining is down to the fact that I have a second digi box in her old bedroom so I can take myself away from the appalling pap any time I like.

Edit, I do mean away from BB by the way , not the wife who watches it.:pp

why don't you all come round to my house? It is a BB free zone as not one of us watches it.

Anyway it has to be said that reality TV can get worse. The Fit Farm comes to mind and I think Extreme Makeover has really hit the bottom rung of the cr@pness ladder.

It's a pity they can't just amalgamate all the reality shows together with ALL the makeover shows combined with every food and gardening programme and then auction off the winner with the flog it show.

Brilliant thread by the way. :tu:

Well I managed about half the posts in the BB thread before I could feel the will to to live ebbing from me. I couldn't give a toss about a bunch of no-hoper, Z list celebrity wannabes. What do they contribute to my life, feck all. My house is BB free 24/7 full stop. BB = Bleedin Bull**** :D :D :D :D :D

Bifta, I'll try and give you a rep when I can for that smilie, need to spread it round first or if someone can on my behalf :tu:

I agree with most of the posters, I think 'reality' is the misnomer, 'staged' as said by Web Junkie is what it is, reality TV are real life documentaries not manipulated to increase viewing numbers.
Entertaining it isn't, a reflection on the media's manipulation of us all it is.
I sometimes think that we are in a worse postion than those in the old Soviet Union, at least they knew everything in the media was propaganda (bulls**t), we don't.

Miss C 23-05-2004 20:39

Re: The Anti-Big Brother Thread!! :D

I avoided Big Brother the first year it was on and only ended up watching the second series because a guy I liked at the time persuaded me to (and asked me to watch Big Brother :D ).

I have to admit amongst all you anti-BBs that I loved BB2. That said, I hated the third one - to me it was a "Hey come and look at the stupid ugly people and laugh at them" attitude all the way through. I was apparently one of the few people who quite enjoyed the fourth series.

It's not something that takes over my life but I'll almost definitely watch the first episode and see how it goes.

That said, I'm glad to see this anti-thread. Generally I think there's far too much reality TV awfulness on these days.

So I'm a kind of double agent because I'm likely to be on both boards....! Is that allowed? :D

C

Well exactly. I think these should be called "Look at just how desperate some people are to get on TV and just what they will do to achieve that goal!" programmes (although I admit it's not quite as catchy a description!) :D

Many thanks, Graham, for providing this Sanctuary of sensibility and calm, reasoned, quiet protest against the various people who allow the subject of the thread to affect their existance, and what is worse, allow that to encroach upon mine.

Long may they linger in the OTHER thread, which I can now happily avoid, safe in the knowledge that regardless of how many premium rate texts/phone calls they have subscribed to, their favoured misfit will have been voted out anyway by others more ready/able to waste fortunes to C4, their telco provider, Uncle Tom Cobbley & all.

i watched the first series and then quite frankly got fairly bored of it all..... watch it now and then when im totally bored and there is nothing else on tv.... and if i do watch them i tend to wait until the last couple....

it's the same with pop idol...watched the first series and then didnt watch any of the others.... they start off fairly good but then instead of quitting while they are ahead they do the same inane stuff and it gets boring and eventually people stop watching it

however i can understand some people enjoy it.... my ex was a fanatic.... made me watch it all the time.....

Done..

Now, on to Big Brother. I have to admit, when I first saw it I did like it, but didn't really go out of my way to watch it (I enjoyed it if it was on). Now, (particularly after BB4) I find I would rather have my teeth pulled than watch another episode.

I think the problem is that the contestants have wised up to Big Brother, and play up to it now, where as for the first couple of years (particularly BB1) , they didn't really know what they were doing so just seemed to act normally. Of course. normally is a relative term, and I do think some of the contestants were a bit, well, round the bend.

Then we had BB2. The contestants started to play up a bit. Particularly Brian Dowling (who could, admittedly, be quite funny). With BB3, the whole thing became a bit of a farce with all of the contestants acting up to some extent. And then, BB4.. Lets just say that watching paint dry was far more interesting than watching that bunch of wasters.

Now, BB5. I don't know what it will be like. Nor do I care particularly.BB has run it's course. The whole point of the "experiment" (if you can call it that) was supposed to be to see how people react when they live their lives on camera. People are playing up. So, we are seeing them how they want us to, not how they are. The only thing it seems to exist for now is to provide Channel 4 with a cheap but very profitable way to fill the airwaves.

Regarding reality tv in general, and I include all those programs where the cameras follow a person for a year for some reason (like the one that followed the residents of Soho Square a while back), and programs like Wife Swap (despite the fact that I enjoy this program and am actually friends with some of the crew who work on it).

Well, I think there is far too much of it on TV. TBH, it has got to the point where if you removed all the soaps, reality tv progs and all the "cop is slightly dodgy, but gets results anyway" drama mini series, you wouldn't find an awful lot left on the BBC1 and ITV schedules.

I would like to sit down one night and watch a really good sci fi program, or a drama with no police or murders involved, and then a good documentary. Even the soaps would be better if they didn't resort to re-using their or other people's storylines and relying on storylines involving people jumping into bed at any opportunity.

It's not going to happen anytime soon though because the people in charge lack imagination, reality tv is cheaper and the public still watch it (so it is profitable).

It's e4 that most effectively blows the lid on Bored Brother. I can just about handle the nightly highlights show, but just think - that's 24 hours of real life condensed into about 25 minutes. When you watch e4 you see BB for what it is: a rat cage containing a dozen very bored and very stupid specimens, on whom ethically dubious experiments are performed by ratings-hungry TV makers.

PS The 'clans' really are all in your mind, there is no 'anti-BB clan' and so far as I can see you are the only member of the 'Big Brother Clan,' which means it's not a clan at all. A clan is a collective noun. It has to have more than one member. ;)

DOH!!!!!!! wiish i had of thought of that one but may have taxed my brain a little but then again it would have lowered my standads to that of a person that watches mindless twaddle on the TV and i consider myself above that. :Peaceman:

It's beginning to freak me out, it looks like it's peeling it's skin off to show it's arse.

I'm so glad my ariel is still broken. I'm going to cancel my TV licence payments next week and when they ask why I'll tell them it's because of Big Brother :)

You don't pay for Channel 4 so that will be their excuse.

I pressed my red button durng friends. It took ages to do anything, then tried to skin me 60p for the privilege of playing some crummy game. Don't think I'll bother again. :(

I think a much better button to press during BB is the one which turns the TV off. Works much better than the interactive ;)

I managed about 20 seconds of BB and HAD to turn the drivel off quick. I chose to watch the paint drying instead :D :D

Well I watched the whole of tonights show and now I feel dirty, I have never liked the idea of reality TV shows. Don't wanna insult anybody here but it may come off that way anyway, ive never thought of my life as beeing so boring that I need to watch somebody else live thiers (and my life is by no means exciting, makes me feel quite sad at times thinking of how bad some of the fanatics lives must be to become so obsessed :( )

The reason I watched tonights show is my Dad is crazy :) and he loves the damn show. Im trying to stay on his good side at the moment to make sure I still get the money for my driving lessons :) also my computer was busy defraging upstairs and my laptop was charging

I made a point of watching anything but BB tonight, forcing other's upstairs to watch it well away from me. My TV, my License and my choice not to watch sh*t!

I can think of only one good reason to press an interactive red button for entertainment.

Gods, you can't get *AWAY* from the bloody show!

I was on the train today and there was a group of people nattering on about all the bloody people they've got on there and who, from what I overheard, seem to be set up mostly to start fights!

Why can't we have an extra feature on the "red button" that allows you to pick one of the housemates and then switch the shower to cold or dump them out of bed or give them electric shocks when they sit down? :shocking:

*THEN* I would watch the show...!! :devsmoke:

Someone call the Fire Brigade, there's a Kitten stuck on the roof...!

(No, I *didn't* watch it, but they stuck a trailer on that I caught)

PS Anyone remember Tackleberry's solution for getting a cat out of a tree in Police Academy?! :D

Home at last and free from the drivel that is Big Brother. Having been forced to watch it against my will, I have come to realise just how boring it is. Listening to them blah blah blah about nothing in particular is so mind numbing. I'm now even more determined to avoid it at all costs

There's fighting in hell's kitchen though! I wouldn't want to meet Amanda Barrie in a dark alley! ;)

Re: The Anti-Big Brother Thread!! :D

Anyone know where to find a video clip online of that mad old bat Barrie trying to hit Ramsey? I read an interview with Barrie today. She really is a dotty old cow. Apparently, she called Ramsey a wimp for getting security to throw the 60-odd year old hag out, when he was only 30. But if he threw her out, like she wanted, could you imagine the furore?

I'd love to see Barrie try it though... Apparently Ramsey dealt with it quite well.

Ok, so pardon me for actually talking about the show, but WTF is going on with the damn thing?

Supposedly the BB team selected a bunch of people to be "controversial" to get the viewing figures up (or some such nonsense) but now they're actually *doing* it, they're threatening to throw them out!!

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews...name_page.html

Can't they make up their bloody minds? Or is it that it's the "wrong sort of snow^H^H^H^H controversy?!"

I think it is called "bugger - they are worse than we thought" :naughty:

I can honestly say that I have not seen any of this series of BB (nor did I watch any of the last series), but my wife is a BB fan so I do (unfortunately) get the odd update :( .
I have yet to find anyhing vaguely enjoyable about the series, and as I stated in the BB thread, if I wanted to watch a load of wannabe celebs make complete arses out of themselves in public, I would either watch the parliament channel (if it still exists) or go down my local on karaoke night.

I caught 5 minutes of BBLB last night, wtf is the point? Highlights of a bunch of tedious people's lives, and who CARES if Dermot O'Leary ponses about in some scraggy old lesbians dressing gown? Is that what people find entertaining nowadays? What they need to do is start pumping some lethal nerve agent through the walls, at least that'd deter future wastes of skin from applying to be contestants.
