Do you have any firewall running on the desktop at all bb?

Chris W 11-05-2004 21:08

Re: grrrrrrr help me with messenger :(

you could try downloading trillian instead and seeing if that will let you connect to the msn service.

I would post a link but all of the sites about messenger programs are blocked :(

Is the desktop running the same internet settings as your Laptop? Proxy etc.
You have tried the reboot the PC trick I suppose, have you checked the desktop is connecting with a valid IP and not a temporary one?

Re: grrrrrrr help me with messenger :(

try downloading trillian from here

http://download.com.com/3000-2150-10...lpagtag=button

it will connect to the msn messenger service and log in there... this will be a work around but might at least keep the teenager happy :)

The content advisor isn't on is it? Seems strange that the laptop is fine and the desktop is not connecting  has anything been installed on it since it last worked and can you try a system restore?

Can you check the internet explorer history view for clues? Hijackthis might help to find any exploits that might be running.

Try turning it off, reboot and turn it on, won't have any restore points but it should then work.
No history? Thats a pain, have you checked task manager for any unusual tasks running?
Aren't those sites reliant on the passport system? Could try removing the .net passport association from the user account and re-boot before re-applying it.
Yep its grasp at straws time :(

Marge 11-05-2004 21:56

Re: grrrrrrr help me with messenger :(

Well, I've suggested that she unplugs all the router etc and try connecting directly with the Pipex modem and see how she goes on

Paul K 11-05-2004 21:58

Re: grrrrrrr help me with messenger :(

Aha a router, did ask about the connection lol if she takes the router out of the loop she needs to enable the firewall on XP first just in case

Paul K 11-05-2004 22:01

Re: grrrrrrr help me with messenger :(

One thing though, if it was the router her laptop wouldn't work when connected to it. Might be a setting in the network cpnfiguration on the desktop.

ok gonna try system restore again, then defrag, not sure about this net.passport thing tho, conneting to net via
d-link dwl g650+ in laptop and d-link g604t dsl wireles router unpugged it and

now gonna go and disconnect it all and plug in original modem into desktop see if that works

Nikko 11-05-2004 22:02

Re: grrrrrrr help me with messenger :(

Is it one MSN/passport account or more than one affected? ie can another user gain access?

Sometimes the server particular to one specific log-in fails but another will go on clean - try another user name

You can remove the passport association through the user accounts applet in the control panel, it may well be a damaged profile, you could try creating a test profile

Make sure there is nothing unusual in options, connections, Lan settings for Internet Explorer too.

Can you not reset the router to factory settings bb? Normally a reset button on them

Richard M 11-05-2004 22:22

Re: grrrrrrr help me with messenger :(

It's probably the port forwarding or something similar.

Suggest lifetime ban on teenagers.Been there, done that.So good at being superior about oldies using technology BUT pretty useless when said technology goes belly up and needs troubleshooting.

Apart from that I can only suggest a good stiff shot of gin. ;) and offer sympathy.

am I being paranoid here?, but, could trying to sort this problem cause more - logging in as admin on the desktop if a keylogger, was running, for example?

bb31 - can you run adaware, or spybot, from the desktop?

Nikko 11-05-2004 22:29

Re: grrrrrrr help me with messenger :(

Sounds overall like the router has dropped the connection - am I right in thinking its wireless?

Try switching everything off - PC, router, CM and switching them on in reverse order - CM, router,PC - might sort itself out.

HTH dont shout if not, lol off to do as my avatar for a spell will check back later

It was a bit strange in the end, we checked the router settings and it didn't have her pipex username and password in, re-entered that and away she went. I know bb31 doesn't know how to access it and I don't think the teenager from hell does. It has been running fine since we set it up a couple of weeks ago  At least it's working now and my ear can recover :erm:

Paul K 11-05-2004 23:37

Re: grrrrrrr help me with messenger :(

Can't the router be password protected? Might just have corrupted some data that was stored on the router itself if no-one in the house can figure out the setup screen lol :( Well done for surviving the earache Debs ;)

You may find you are still using the default user name (admin) and password as denoted in the manual. Always a good idea to password the router just in case :)

ive checked the router settings and it has my user name etc all looks ok, only thing that might have affected it, is reinstalled windows xp, new router -same as before- just a new one cos the original overheated -and its been this way a while just not fot round to sorting it.

You had a go at running and spyware/malware removing programs?

Try Adaware or spybot.

And have you ran a virus check with NAV?
