It doesn't say what percentage of drivers actually are women - it's all very well saying (for instance) that only 17% of speeding offences were women - but if only 10% of all drivers are women then that actually makes them worse.

How does the percentage of drivers make any difference? It's not about the amount of women drivers total, it's about the percentages of offences that each gender are responsible for..... :shrug:

It's not just the percentage of drivers that are women but also the number of miles they drive compared to how many men drive.

There is no mention in the statistics of how many backseat women drivers were responsible for male committed offences. :D

If we take 100 drivers 90% of which are male and 10% female

The percentage of say 20 offences committed by the whole could be 50/50 .. but that would mean an equal number of each which would therefore work out at 10 women and ten men.. Therefore the other 80 men not included in that are ignored. It therefore would be more realistic in that hypothetical situation to say (roughly)10% of men and 100% of women offended.

I hope thats clear.. because I'm not so great at maths anymore

OB you should have realised that posting about this on a MALE DOMINATED forum like this would get such responses.

Frankly just leave 'em in ignorance.You and I know how the land lies when it comes to car insurance anyway.It's why the family car is in MY name(he drives my car on sufferance)and thus the insurance is in my name.Cheaper that way.

However when it comes to back seat driving why is it I'm always invited to do the driving in town but on the motorway I get no look in?:D

that's interesting, It's pretty much the same in our household, I prefer 'open road' driving & can concentrate for longer, but my wife is a far better driver, than me, round town, as she has more patience:)

How true. I now some will say there are men that park bad and there are but just the amount of women that have problems parking is unreal. Why do hey have to leave the car 20 miles away from the curb :erm:

I think women take a lot less risks than men, hense the lower accident figures, but there are a few women I know that are very nervous drivers and are very lucky to not have been in an accident.

That report isn't as detailed as the one the was in the Evening Standard earlier (see here). Everyone seems to be ignoring the fact that good driving comes down to high speed.

In my opinion: People think drivers are good because they can drive slowly, when it is fact the complete opposite. Men are normally better drivers because they can drive faster (much faster normally) in the same area that women can drive. For example, it takes virtualy no skill to drive at 15mph, but if you can drive 60 in a 30, without killing yourself or anyone else, you must be a pretty good driver. This is why Schumacher is one of the world's best drivers. He can cope with driving 200mph around a track. If he drove at 30mph around it, I doubt people would have as much respect for him, except for women maybe. My dad who was an driver for an IRV for the Met Police is a brilliant driver, because he could drive at speeds I simply couldn't.

Also, it acknowledged that men drive on average over 6500 miles and for women it is just under 3000. Therefore, you have to normalise the figures to get a fair comparison. You have to halve the male figures straight away - Men will get caught speeding more (and have more accidents) if they drive twice as much. We still have a worse record, but not anywhere near as much as we did before.

Oh, also, it seems like women seem to hit inanimate objects, and objects in a carpark a lot. When you halve the men's figures (or double the women's) it looks even worse. How on earth you can have an accident at 5mph or drive into a post is beyond me. Sorry ladies. :)

ok, now i've stoked the fire a little bit i can get to my opinion :PP:

I don't think it really has anything to do with gender itself, but rather the cultures that we live in due to them, which are different due to us segregating ourselves.

As woman become more masculine and men more feminin, our abilitys will also homogenise.

No being serous now I've got to say there are far too many women drivers I've seen who look scared while driving. They hold the wheel like the world is going to blow up if they slacken there grip. They just need to chill more. They will be able to judge the space around them more for packing problems and just better driving in general.

The funniest one i've ever seen is where the parking space is huge, like in a V shape with lights, and skid marks going everywhere. Can't for the life of me find it though.

How rude of you chaps :nono: parking is my forte and I'm a good driver overall. I get a discount on my car insurance for being a lady driver :D. However I am a crap passenger as Xaccers found out to his cost :erm:

You know this attitude really ticks me off.

My husband WON'T turn right at junctions.He'd rather keep going left in the hope that he can eventually get to where he wants without ever crossing traffic!!!Also the only reason he won't drive in town(he'd rather catch the bus-and has done so frequently) is because he hates parking.It's the only reason I get to drive in town or up to the DIY.HE CAN'T PARK!!!!!

Yep I have done a Park and Reverse lesson with the Institute of Advenced Motorists and at the end only one participant had scored the maximum 12/12 - ME!!!!!!! And I was the only woman out of 10 taking the lesson. Even now I have to park in a straight line with the wheels perfectly straight - I don't want some bloke walking past thinking 'I bet a woman parked that!' :D

I'm sorry I upset you, but I only thought it was a bit of harmless fun. They say men won't ask for directions, can't read maps and are terminally lost. I know that doesn't apply to me, but i'll still laugh along with it. Ditto with farting and belching national anthems etc.

When you stereotype there'll always be exceptions, but you can't really have a joke without it.

Chimaera: Good job passing the test. I've often thought about going for the IAM test myself. But i'd never live it down if I failed, especially as my dad passed.

I must admit to being impressed by some of the women drivers around here, They can put on make-up, talk on the phone, chat to the kids, do their hair, eat their breakfast and still manage to speed past the local primary school all at the same time.
But if you say anything about it they tell you to **** off because they are quite safe. :disturbd: :disturbd: :disturbd:

I have had three seriously close calls on my bike with stupid drivers 2 where taxis (Doesnt seem to matter what gender a taxi driver is since the driver owns the road :rolleyes: though I do admit they where men) and 1 women driver (In a 4x4 of all things, why do tiny people insist on driving off-road cars, esp women I have noticed)

I'm not having a joke here I have laughed out loud of some of the parking I've seen. Some really have been in the middle of the road and its not just unsafe its stupid. I have not given out any stereotyping at all.I've been telling the truth about MY husband,whom I may add is the worst backseat driver in the world.I at least keep my mouth shut when he is driving. ;) I just close my eyes instead. :D

:D ONE COMMENT??? :D I noticed that the men changed their tune about women being bad drivers to being poor at parking pretty damn quick too.Possibly because they can't argue with insurance companies that reward women drivers with lower premiums. ;)

I shouldn't rise to the bait, but I will. The reason women get lower insurance premiums has nothing to do with how good their driving is.

Premiums are set on previous statistics. Let's have a look shall we... Firstly, women drive less. According to that article, it is under half as much. Anyone who drives less is liable to have less accidents, so lower premiums. Secondly, women tend to go for small, older cars. When they do have an accident, when an F reg Fiesta hits another car, it is going to be much cheaper to settle the claim, than a bloke who has a new 3 series BMW (no accounting for taste though :))

You can't say women get lower insurance premiums because they are better drivers. Like I said, surely the faster someone can travel without hitting something, the better the driver they are. That's how Schmacher is bloody good driver, as opposed to a terrible one. Driving at 5mph, in my mind takes no skill. Now bear in mind, if you look at the statistics from that Evening Standard article, women are more liable to hit things in car parks, even without normalised figures.

And thirdly, it's just one of those things - it affects men so noone cares. If women or black people were automatically surcharged on their insurance, there would of been outrage years ago. If I had the time, i'd love to try and fight this blatant sex discrimination. You can choose a powerful, or slow car, or live in a high/low risk area, but I have no choice in my gender. It shouldn't ever come into the policy.
