BBC vetting old sitcoms

CLASSIC BBC sitcoms are being vetted for racism after viewers complained about offensive language in repeats

I can sort of see their reasoning but at the same time where does it all end?....what next.....are we going to have to put fig leaves over classical nudes to avoid offending people?

Who has decided that we are all really sensitive nowadays and need "offensive" material from the past...censored?

To remove a reference to a "Paki" shop in Only Fools and Horses from years ago is bonkers (anyone offended by me using that word will find a box of tissues at the end of the post). That is what they were called in those times. A shop that was run by a Pakistani was called a Paki shop. Big deal. That's what is was. I have heard Pakistani call each other "Pakis" many a time, for goodness sake.

If you ran a corner shop in Cardiff, would you be offended by the term Welshie shop?

This whole thing has really upset and offended me ...

Boo hoo......boo hoooooo

Well, I don't think they are doing too much damage, but I'd rather see the time and effort used on sky1 adverts

Hmmmmmm, I see their point when it comes to just getting a cheap gag..........BUT......if it reflects the way things were then you cant exactly remove history can you?
I think each use of the language has got to be considered on its own merits......if you see what i mean.

One of my favourite programs is "It aint half hot mum" Cringeability factor 10......They would have to wipe out the whole series :(

It would seem that some people are (really sensitive), as the censoring is taking place in response to viewers' complaints. That does not mean it is not completely ridiculous of course. Rather than removing phrases because their meaning/offensiveness has changed over the years, we should take these shows for what they are: a product of the time in which they were made.

Edit: I see aliferste has just made a similar point...

Completely agree.

I do not understand some people, There was a complaint upheld last week about a radio presenter who let slip the f word on air a while ago. He apologized immediately about the slip, but 1 person still complained. Why do some people complain about something like that???
The issue at hand is wrong in my view because the programs are already in 'the public domain' and to alter them would be to interfere with history as pointed out previously.

Err, I don't know if you're aware, but this *has* happened in the past!

Many classical paintings had fig leaves added after they were finished and it's alleged that the Vatican has a basement storeroom *full* of stone genitalia that have been removed from statues and replaced by carved fig leaves.

Ouch!! :Yikes:

Thats why I used that example. I thought that it had been consigned to the past.

I can see why new material being produced should be sensitive to people's feelings nowadays, but is there really any point in an episode that is 20 years old, and has been seen by 18m people? I mean, they didn't complain about it then, would they complain about it now? Everyone knows what was said originally.

Plus I think the whole paki-being-insult term is stupid. How can Pakistani be fine, when Paki not be? It's the same saying you call a briton, and that's fine. call me a brit, and i'll get you done for inciting racial hatred. If you were indian, I can see how it is an insult, but what about if you were pakistani? If any asians read this, i'd like to know how they really about it. Surely it is their point of view that counts, rather than, what I suspect are white bosses tryijng to patronise the public.

Surely, it is only going to get worse.

Because it has generally been a derogatory term for people from Pakistan or India. Pakistanis dont call themselves Pakis the way we call ourselves Brits.
And just before someone starts saying that they overhear pakistani youngsters calling each other it I think its in the same way that Black people have retaken the word "nigger" for themselves.

He means that it doesn't feel like home anymore. You can't rely on the prevailing views to mirror your own any more because too many alien views are impinging on Englands culture and it's once self-evident norms.
Hell....I'm not English and even I can see it.

Its hardly something to get that annoyed about though is it? I dont think they are going over the score, I mean its just the really offensive ones they are taking out.

Ach, there is not really that many dos and donts Defiant........hardly worth getting in a spin about it really......Dont think that voting in the BNP would help in the places they have been voted they did nowt.....didnt even show up for meetings.......maybe that is what being a true "Brit" is all about....."canae be arsed getting off ma lazy bum to do anything" and then moaning when all the jobs get sent overseas. Seems to be a common thing these days.

All the call centre jobs and the manufacturing jobs going overseas.......were people work long hours for peanuts.

I dont see what people are coming here for the benefits, 30 bucks a week isnt actually something to send home now is it? Usually they say its something like people speak English here, or they know its a fair country ...

Its all been happening as attitudes are changing towards the way we look at the world and people in the world. Past injusticies are looked at and are tried to be rectified.....

Sometimes Defiant you remind me of an old person who complains of too many damn young people these days........its not there is more young people its that he is old! ;)

I'm just one of the few who speaks my mind and ruddy ****ed off at all these do gooders.

Here's another example,

Quote:

BRITAINââ‚à ‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢S top judge was slammed yesterday over a politically correct legal handbook.

Lord Chief Justice Woolf warned judges not to use †œasylum seekerââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚, †œblackâ €  and †œdisabledÃÂà ‚¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã‚ƚ when describing people.

He also suggests neutral language such as †œtheyâà ƒƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã‚  instead of †œheâÃÆ ’¢â€šÂ¬Ã‚ or †œsheâà ƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã‚ †” and †œpostal workerââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ for †œpostmanà¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã‚ .

I dont want to turn this into another big asylum seeker debate thread Defiant, you know we have oposite views......but asylum seekers dont get giros for cars ......they are put in the council housing that noone wants anyway and basicaly all it does is raise the standard of the area as a bit of new blood is being put in.

If someone commits a crime why call them an asylum seeker.........is it because so much negative press has been aimed at them that most peoples opinions are clouded......yup!!

Ive just read the article........you see they are talking about context again Defiant..........the sun has taken a story , twisted it to make it look negative to rile people against what is a perfectly reasnable view.

Its nice to know there are so many gullible people about that believe that rubbish. Oh and there are Giro's going about for 3 grand. Its been discussed on a radio talk show at length (people have seen them and know of people who have had them) plus I know someone who's in the car business and had one of these to pay for a vehicle. They got the vehicle for much less than that figure but wanted the left over cash mind. You should do more result instead do being so gullible. It would seem the tell the DSS that they cannot use public transport because of the language problem or there being victimised etc

Re: BBC vetting old sitcoms

Im sorry Defiant but then it just goes to show you how much innaccurate information can be in the concious mind if it can get onto a talk show. Asylum Seekers are not allowed a giro to buy a car........the last time this was brought up on these boards i contacted the benefits agency and the local refugee council.......the refugee council said "we wish!!" and the benefits agency said "they wish!!"

I wonder how your friend knew they were asylum seekers.......you talk as if they go around telling people they are asylum seekers and are enjoying wripping you off thank you very much.....in fact that is how the press percieve them to be..which is not the case.
