Carr out by the end of the week!

Quote:

Maxine Carr has pleaded guilty to 20 charges of benefit fraud and lying on job applications.

Carr, 27, from Grimsby, is serving a three-year jail sentence for conspiring with the Soham killer Ian Huntley to pervert the course of justice.

She has been given a three-year community rehabilitation order for the deception offences. Carr is expected to be released by the end of the week.

Re: Carr out by the end of the week!

I guess this was an attempt to try to keep her inside for as long as possible, more than likely for her own protection.

Even if she is given anonymity and a secret location, without constant police protection I cannot see her being safe anywhere in this country - as her face is now so recognisable.

I would think that it is far cheaper to keep her inside than offer police protection - although it looks like this has failed and she will be released according to the law.

I think it is still very unclear, although the courts have decided, how involved she was in the murder of those two little girls - and as such the vast majority of people still think she was involved in their killing.

I think it is very clear indeed that she was not at all involved in the killing. Her conviction centres on the fact that she claimed she was in town to give Huntley and alibi when in fact she was away in Grimsby. If she was proven to be many miles away, and was found guilty of perverting the cause of justice for that reason, what could possibly still be unclear?

The jury decided what she was guilty of, and it is a sacred legal principal that a properly informed and guided jury cannot be wrong.

Maxine Carr is guilty of extreme stupidity. She did not kill anyone, she did not plan to kill anyone and she was not an accessory to killing anyone. She will shortly have done her time and has the same right as anyone else in this country to try to put it behind her and get on with her life.

I think it's very clear since she was 100+ miles away, in Grimsby, at the time. I'd like to know how these people propose she was involved - telekenesis perhaps. :erm:

Nugget 10-05-2004 15:25

Re: Carr out by the end of the week!

Unfortunately, whereas some people may think that she was more involved in the deaths of the girls, it has been decided in a court that she was 'only' guilty of perverting the course of justice in that she provided a false alibi for Huntley. This was also shown in the sentence handed down of 3 years.

Because of this, and taking into account her good behaviour while in prison, she is actually eligible for release on Saturday (15 May). However, because prisoners are not released at weekends, she has to be let out on Friday as, if it was kept until Monday, it would technically be false imprisonment because she will be 2 days past her release date.

The problem may well arise that, as has been said, she is now very recognisable but, if she has decided not to take a new identity and move back to Grimsby, there is nothing the authorities can do about it - she should be able to expect the same freedom of liberties as any other member of Joe Public. Whether her safety can be guaranteed, however, is another question entirely.

I agree, and as she was nowhere near the murder scene, she was obviously not directly involved in their deaths - what is not clear is how much she knew or covered up what she knew - but then I guess we never will. If she knew then she is an accessory.

Ok, but lets say that you knew about someone that was abusing little girls.

Would you just sit there and wait for something to happen or tell the police.

She must have known something was going on, and instead, blotted it out of her mind.

She could have prevented this.

I don't understand. What must she have known? How could she have prevente the murders from happening?

At risk of appearing stupid, how exactly could she have prevented what happened? As has been stated already (and presented in court), Maxine Carr was in Grimsby at the time (approx 100 miles away from Soham) and had no influence on what Huntley was doing (and, from what has been written about their relationship, probably couldn't have done anything about it anyway).

The only thing that she could have done differently was tell the truth in the first place and reduce the amount of time that the girls parents had to wait to find out what had happened to their daughters - she was convicted of the crime that she commited, nothing else.

Re: Carr out by the end of the week!

Im sure as hell you would think straight too under those circumstances.

She was just protecting someone she loved, whom she probably thought could never do something like that.

IF you KNEW something was going on for sure then its a different story, but as she was miles away, and he was the only party involved so im willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe that she knew nothing and was just going long with that he told her.

Either way im sure the press will be all over her like the vultures and stirring up all the bad memories again for the parents and villagers in Soham.

Its those people that i really feel for, they dont get any peace due to the media attention what with the funeral, the 1 year on service, 2 trials, releases, etc.

They need to just x off and let it lie.

I hope that they will, but sadly I think there are more papers to be sold on the back of 'moral outrage' that the evil killer's handmaiden from hell has been released, than would be sold by headlines suggesting we let her get on with her life.

Perhaps she should dye her hair Blonde to match her stupidity :D

The fact that she actually had nothing to do with Huntleys act has nowt to do with it, there are enough hotheads out there that will want to cause her grief anyway. Unfortunately we are now going to be paying for her protection from them. She should move away & assume another identity.

Hopefully outside the EU? So, as far away from you as possible, is that what you're saying? I hope you realise that that kind of attitude is what is causing the problem here.

The UK itself should not be unsafe - while I accept that feelings run high about Maxine Carr, I feel that a lot of people understand that her part in what happened in Soham was minimal. As has been said elsewhere in this thread, we unfortunately live in a culture where certain members of society will be up in arms about the fact that she is being released, even though she has served the sentence that was handed down in a court of law.

As for her being moved to another country - why exactly? As I said in one of my earlier posts, Maxine Carr is as entitled to her freedom as any other member of this democratic country - she was given the choice of taking a new identity and has refused it (as is her right). This kind of statement doesn't exactly help - are you saying that you'd rather she was further away from you? Again, I emphasise that she has served her time and is now entitled to be released and live where she chooses, not the hate mobs.

I don't think it is SDA that is making the country unsafe for her - at least I hope not - but it's the readers of the red-tops, who getted whipped up into a storm at the slightest piece of tabloid-journalism printed.

It is wrong, it should not happen - if we were all thinking with level heads, we would see that she comitted a crime - she did not murder anyone, but she did perjure herself (like I said yesterday to what extent we'll never really know, but that's irrelevant now). She was convicted of the crime she comitted, she served her sentance according to the statute books, and now she's coming out.

But - and this is the key here - for those not able, through no fault of their own, to think in this level headed manner they will always associate her with with the killing of two young girls. We can't change it, no matter how incorrect it may be - it's the way it is.

The question now needing to be asked is how much this will cost us. She will need protection, I don't have a problem with that - but at what cost? And how long should we be expected to pay for the protection of someone who lied to cover up a murder?

For as long as those who have been whipped up into a frenzy by the Red Top papers are a threat to her.

If you have a problem with that, take it up with said Red Top papers, because *they* are the ones who are *responsible* for her needing that protection which is coming out of *your* tax money.

yes im harsh, but the laws in this country do no justice.

I disagree. The papers can influence the publics opinion to a huge extent. If they wanted to, they could rally round Carr and make things a lot safer for her.

A recent quote published by "the sun" and quoted elsewhere...

" Carr - the most hated woman in Britain"

That comment was tantamount to incitement in my opinion.

Can anyone explain to me please... How is the public interest served by hounding this woman?

The press should be bound by court order to leave her alone.( oh and before there any cries of " freedom of the press " please answer my question above :) )

It's a chicken and egg situation....whilst not specifically in the public interest it may be representative of a public opinion.

I agree about a court order - I don't think the law will allow for this, although it could exclude the papers giving any indications as to where she is.

I'm not saying that the paper is right in what it's doing, but they are no specifically saying that their readers should do anything about it.

Personally I would prefer to have the facts reported. She's being released, etc etc - I can make up my own mind as to whether I like her or not.

A little too harsh I think.

Whilst I understand your opinion that sheââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s an habitual liar (as a result of the Benefit fraud charges etc), it still doesnââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t change the fact that she was (at the time) †˜onlyâÃà ‚¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ found guilty of perverting the course of justice and, as a result, was sentenced appropriately †“ you canââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t use the argument of a now uncovered track record to say that she should be locked up for years, as it had no relevance to the case in point.

I understand what you're saying but, to use a recent example, the courts could take the same path as they use with Venables and Thompson (sorry, I can't remember their first names, but they are the two lads who killed Jamie Bulger), then the press would not be allowed to reveal the location - any paper that did would be in breach of a court order and subject to criminal action themselves.

Robert and John, IIRC. The difference in that case is that both boys have grown up and changed in appearance since they were jailed, so they have a good chance of remaining anonymous wherever they choose to live, with help from a court order designed to prevent their grown-up faces being connected with their old names.

Carr, on the other hand, is all to recognisable.

Sorry, I'm just trying to play a bit of Devils Advocate. Unfortunately, as has been proven in this thread, it's an inflammatory topic, and I'm just trying to put a reasoned point across - apologies if I'm getting a bit above myself!

I was using the arguement regarding the two boys to try and give a response to both Julian and Kronas.

kronas, she killed no one.She stupidly lied for someone she loved but she killed no one.

The problem is that everyone has Hindley and Brady in the backs of their minds when they think of this case. However they shouldn't.Hindley was directly involved in all Brady's murders.Carr was tricked into lying to protect her lover from one thing and then discovered that she was stuck in a lie that quickly unravelled her whole world.Even if she had told the truth at the start those two children were already dead and she had not killed them.

Personally I think her sentence should have been longer as a warning to others who commit such perjury but that is another issue.

Incog.

Very true, although I guess we will never know whether she was really tricked into perjuring herself, or if she chose to do - like I said, it's irrelivant now anyway.

I feel the punishment for perverting the course of justice is nowhere near severe enough anyway - but that's a topic for another thread I guess.

Re: Carr out by the end of the week!

I think we're getting a bot confused here - please correct me if I'm wrong but, AFAIK, she never perjured herself. During the court case, she told the truth regarding the fact that she lied to police and, as a result, was convicted for perverting the course of justice - if she;d told the truth from the start, the police may have found out about Huntley earlier.

that's as may be - but the court decided on the sentence, and I am guessing that they felt that she was not acting out of deliberate malice, but to protect the man she both loved and believed was innocent.

Again - if you loved someone and they were accused of such a heinous crime, would you instantly stop loving them, even though they proclaimed their innocence to you, or would you find it hard to accept that this person, whom you love and think you know, could be the person that they are accused of being ?

Exactly what i was about to post - who says that she knew that he had killed them.

She probably thought, like all the rest of us, that nobody would be capable of such a thing, never mind the person she loved.

To blame her or even assosiate her with the murder is rediculous, she lied, but then confessed to the lie when she started to realise excatly what had happened.

Thats enough for me - she protected the person she loved until it became apparent that things were not right with his end of the story - then confessed - and all some of you can do is condem her as an assosiate to murder.

Wake up.

no i would 'hold out' but not lie for the person, to lie is an admission of a cover up on the guilty parties request, you are still guilty of something if you lie about it to the police, and she lied for him.

i do know she lied for him to protect him but a lie is a lie and she lied to the police.

the evidence was there for all to see, to use a phrase in 'black and white'

no i would 'hold out' but not lie for the person, to lie is an admission of a cover up on the guilty parties request, you are still guilty of something if you lie about it to the police, and she lied for him.

i do know she lied for him to protect him but a lie is a lie and she lied to the police.

Yes, she lied to the police, because the man she loved probably told her that he was innocent, but had no way to prove it.

As soon as she realised the truth she came clean.

She was punished for lying to the police, but had she not told the truth (albeit belatedly), he may well have never got to court, as his alibi would be hard to disprove.

I find it hard to imagine just how she must have felt when she realised that she had been played, and that the man she loved was capable of something so heinous.

They say that love is blind - but imagine the horror when you can suddenly see clearly and you are looking at this man....

Wake up.

Interesting quote from the Article Tez.

One thing that DOES make me angry. What The F**k are the Sun doing tracking down and printing photos of her Mum? I suspect the poor woman is having enough trouble coping with what her daughter has been involved in without the tabloids tracking her down and printing her photo (which will probably lead Lynch mobs to her, adding to her problems). Unless I am very much mistaken, they are victimising an innocent woman.

There have been articiles complaining (particularly from the Mail and the Sun) about how much is being spent on protecting Maxine Carr. Yes, a lot of money will be spent on her protection. Most if it is probably due to the repeated articles in the papers designed to whip up hate for this women, just for extra Readers.

If they are going to carry on, maybe the Newpapers should pay some money toward the protection to reduce the burden on the public purse? Failing that, maybe they could pay some money towards those who will have their budgets cut to pay for this protection?

It's the Sun. It doesn't need to explain. A lot of its readers may probably simply believe anything it says.

Ye gods, that is despicable and a blatant mis-representation.

Yes she lied to get benefits, yes she lied about Huntley, but to *SAY* that there is a *LINK* between the two and that her lies were somehow a *cause* of these murders beggars belief :( :( :(

Re: Carr out by the end of the week!

I agree with that - in a country where you get a more severe penalty for going ten miles an hour over the speed limit than you do for beating someone up - it really is about time that the sentances and fines for all crimes were re-evaluated.

And when it comes to perverting the course of justice and perjury - the sentances should really be linked to the crimes they were assocaited with - for example if someone perjures themselves in a case about, say, TV license evasion - they should not have the same imprisonment guidelines as someone who lies in a murder case.

Sky News just reporting she has been moved out of prison tonight to a safe house but not actually free until Friday.

I've just clicked on CB's link again - the story has just been updated.

They now say the papers *only* contained details of the release, & had nothing about her new ID.

Still hardly a surprise that some idiot stole them though.

Maybe you will all accuse me of being a consipiracy theorist here, but hear me out:

What are the chances of someone trying to steal the very car where these papers were?

What is the chance that the driver of the car would leave his documents in the car?

OK, it could be a co-incidence, granted - but is it?

I think you are being a conspiracy theorist here ;)

Seriously, you can spot a conspiracy theory - lots of leading questions but very little in the way of proof. There is such a fever of speculation, and even a touch of moral outrage, around Carr at the moment that just about anything seems plausible.

Actually normally I'm the first to criticise conspiracy theories - but this all seems a little too obvious. Having worked in the media for many years, I know the way that these things can work - journalists and governments do deals to leak this kind of stuff at the top level. As the most basic, say the guy who's car it was felt strongly about the subject - it's been known to give the nod to a paper or journo that the information is going to be at a certain place at a certain time. This could be purely for monetary reasons or just what he might feel (somewhat misguidedly in my opinion) to be the 'right' thing to do.

It's all just a little too convenient that this information has fallen into the public domain. Also the thing about the papers being 'found dumped' on Hampstead Heath - this is classic journalist disposal method. I mean, any normal person would burn them, shred them, bury them in the garden, etc!!

Actually, this is :notopic: but you have just reminded me on an interview I heard with Max Clifford years ago. Now, I don't trust the man (he gives me the creeps for some reason), but he did say one thing that interested me. Remember all the fuss about Antonia De Sanchez and David Mellor (Toe sucking/Chelsea strip etc)? Apparently he was hired to leak that by the Government. He was never told officially why, but unofficially, he heard a rumour that it was to throw the media off the scent of something else the Government was doing at the time.

Maybe that has happened here, although, like all good conspiracy theories, I doubt we will ever hear the truth if that's the case.

I certainly would not put it past some **** journalist to pay some dumb sucker to get a copy of the papers. Even though the information would immediatly be worthless once stolen, it would still give the journalist a detailed insight into how the police arrange a new identity ... and I just wonder which publication would want that info, NOT.

I hope that Carr gets to live in peace from now on and screw those low brow knuckkle draggers who are themselves a far greater threat to our society than Carr could ever be.

I would think a normal person is much more likely to dispose of the documents in the way that happened. Once they saw what they had they would want to rid their hands of it straight away.

ON the other hand this COULD be a promotion/storyline for the forthcoming 2nd series of state of play......
