NTL Green Box

Was outside earlier putting some new grass seed on the lawn and found a green NTL box in the grounds of the flats round the back corner from my flat. It's part of the grounds no-one goes. Anyway, the actual front is just hanging on a ridge on the top of the main case. I was able to lift it off with no problem and look inside. The inside is disgusting, wires everywhere (Some even popping out the side of the box), snails, spiders. God, it's amazing we actually get signal in the building looking at the inside of that thing!

Then here is a suggestion that might just help :Yikes:

Report it to NTL

Suggestion noted. If I was staying with them I might, but as I will soon have a nice shiny mesh dish on the side of my flat, I'm not very motivated. I don't think I'll be going back to NTL. Well, not in this lifetime anyway. They've had their pound of flesh from me. :)

I understand your thinking CB (wtf have ntl ever done for me?), but think of the other poor peeps who may not know that their cabinet is knackered. :(

Do the decent thing-give ntl a ring. :tu:

I did, and I tucked the wires that had been hanging out back inside. What number do I call? I suppose I should be public spirited. :)

I'll go out tomorrow and have a look. It's dark outside now. It's a box for just our block of flats, does that matter? Not sure if it serves anyone outside of our building.

Re: NTL Green Box

I know what you mean. Charlie. My local cabinet has been open for well over a year, and I once lost service for like 4 days, because some idiot came along and ripped out all the cables. Fixing it is not so easy. When I called up and reported it at the time (the engineer said he would as well), I just got punted around what seems like every department in NTL, before getting to a guy who said he would deal with it. The only trouble was, I seemed to have interrupted his lunch, and I don't think he knew what a street cabinet was.

But good news. I was trying to find the thead I started a while ago about my street cab, when I stumbled across this one. I'm happy to say, the cabinet has been fixed. It was nothing to do with me, because I just forgot about it like normal, so if anyone on here did anything on here to fix it (expecially Pritch or peachy), I'm eternally grateful :)

I notice that one near me has just been repainted, albiet in a lighter shade of Green & there are lots of splatters of paint on the road...

I think the door is still broken though :)

Hey All,

I've noticed another green box needing attention in my area. The number is NO150 (I think, or it might have been NO159). Its door is open and it looks like someone tried to tape it closed with insulating tape. Its on Deanery Road in Stratford (E15) near to the junction with the Romford Road.

Hope this helps,

Phil.

Its a nightmare to get cabinets close to be honest. They get opened so frequently that the odd time the engineer does not close them properly (they are only human). Plus wee vandal aswell :(

Sorry for being nosey, just curious, what is actually housed in these cabinets? I just know that it must be each invidual property's connection to the NTL network.

now that would be telling :)

There is a load of taps (what the coax screws into) with different power ratings.

Lowest tap = least power
Highest tap = highest power.

and there is also all connections for your telephone lines.

Pretty much depends on where you are, I think. By default, the cabs (and BT's) are nicely painted / powder coated in dark green, but it's not unknown for them to be other colours to appease local authorities. For example, cabinets in Swansea city centre are blue to fit in with the bins and other street furniture, although I'm not sure who owns said cabs. I think some may be NTL.

Our inspection covers have hand prints moulded into the concrete covers, Hollywood style. We have had the 'Cable' removed from the embossed 'Diamond Cable' as this far better reflects the feel of the neighbourhood.

The pavement trenches have been gilt inlaid, to match the original gold paving, and our UBR housing has a mock Gothic facade so as to be superficially indestiguishable from other fine emporia and edifices in the locality.

On the subject of vandalism of equipment - what's the policy regarding protecting wires with metal conduit? That might be a daft question :erm: Around here (Holbeck - LS11) the houses are all terraced and many are direct onto the street. Kids take pleasure in yanking at the cables attached to the fronts/sides of the houses. My broadband cable has lost 3 clips already - the phone and aerial cables have also suffered. I've noticed that on some houses the broadband/TV cables are liable to trip or garrote pedestrains :D At my old flat the engineers did install protective conduit, but not here - where it's needed most.

might be a stupid question but....is there where the contention ratio of 15:1 comes from? as in 15 individual NTL installations to each green box or am i incorrect?
Mine are dark green here in Coventry.

Re: NTL Green Box

All the Nynex networks (Wirral and Bromley) from what I seen used black cabs.

bigitup_j 18-05-2004 12:59

Re: NTL Green Box

i live in a former nynex area. and they are all Leaf green...the BT ones are olive green really.

in greenwich all the boxes are black...to fit in with the rest of the street furniture.
:)

Same happened when I used to live in Leicester near the university. Every monday morning all the wires would of been ripped off and the brown boxes ripped open. NTL would then come and fix them until the next week. I did notice that some started having metal applied to them, but no idea whether this was ntl or privately done.

Not sure where you'd get the conduit from otherwise I might get some and fix it up. My brown box is in the cellar, which is a small mercy I guess.

Re: NTL Green Box

In Hertford they seem to have decided black or green depending on whether it was against a hedge or a wall / fence. Thas only the small cabs, all the bigger ones are green.

In our corner of Hemel Hempstead the boxes are decorated with the names of the pop acts the local chavs are in to this week. Plus the usual waffle about who fancies who, and who's the biggest slapper.

Re: NTL Green Box

LOL I was going to say this. There is like only one NTL CAB round here which isnt covered.
