NTL has almost left the building!

Just logged on to my new Pipex ADSL account. Set the router and modem up and everything went swimmingly first time. I must say that the download speed from newsservers is a couple of k down on NTL, but the web browsing is so much faster. Amazingly noticeable. Everything on a page is up in an instance, no hanging around waiting a couple of seconds as I was with NTL. I'm happy. Roll on Sunday and Sky installation! :D

I know how you feel 'CB'-It's a world apart ffrom ntl's pi$$ poor 'service' isn't it?

Enjoy!

Charlie_Bubble 05-05-2004 20:36

Re: NTL has almost left the building!

Plus, I've just realised the download speed is pretty solid at 8:15pm, whereas on NTL, my part of the network must be full or something, because it's very patchy to download from the same server until after about 11pm. :)

Many thanks for the above contributions: Most sensible people form their own opinions.

Its patently obvious who is trolling on this site: Since you own it, thats fine - carry on. However, it is a free market - so give it a bit of passing respect?

Well Neil

Enough is enough i have just about had enough of your hatred for NTL why dont you just rename this forum the "ADSL is the best and NTL is SH$T forum".

What we need is a forum that is run by people that look at both sides of the coin not just 1

Was nice why it lasted.

Dont bother with a witty reply as i will not be here to read it.

But its all to waste if all users see is a total hatred for ntl with no give or take
from certain users of this forum they know who they are. It just gets on my nerves that for all the good work that has been done by so many differant users on this forum there is this hard core hatred of anything NTL by a few.

Now i can see me getting banned or something for this but it has to be said.

and this is not a EGO thing on my part i just think that this forum can be so helpfull for so many. NTL did not see it that way thats why they shut down .COM Please dont let this become a hate site again. That will help noone.

Thank you Bill - I'm sure that was a very fair description of ALL the people who help to run this site. :grind:

You are well aware that not everyone shares Neil's dislike of NTL. You (and he) know that we disagree on this. For instance - as you may have noticed - Mansfield suffered a major phone system failure today - so I rang our CS (on behalf of my parents) - I got through in about 7 minutes (bear in mind this was a big failure which generated a mass of calls).

Once connected the CS person clearly informed me that there was a switch failure affecting thousands of lines, and that engineers were on their way to fix it. He could not give me an estimated fix time as he was not aware what the fault was. No B$, just the facts - just what I expected from our local CS. :tu:

The people who run this forum all have different views of NTL - good & bad. That's what helps make it the site it is. :)

I know when I posted a thread praising ntl, Neil did the same thing as in this thread. I had the same problem again as the first this week and ntl sorted it out straight away no problem. Not all of the users are so against ntl regardless.

I know I haven't come to you for help, but I've seen that you were there before and that's what this site needs. Staff who can help. You are actually appreciated.

As i stated this is not a ego trip for me i just cannot see why there has to be this level of hatred from certain users. Any company can make mistakes.

I agree with you Bill, but at the end of the day.. if there was no one demeaning a company.. then why have a site?

It's human instinct, when something goes wrong.. You find the source and blame it, which is what's going on here. Obviousley Neil's had a bad time with NTL.. Is finding Pipex good, thus raving about it :)

I never once had a problem with NTL, but because I needed to get rid of DTV, decided to change to Pipex.. where im not having any problems either.

Conflicting user's are what make's a message board work, would be boring to disagree all the time ;)

Bill, Neil has sung your praises in the past.

He is allowed to give his opinion on NTL just as you are. Being an admin (and co-owner of the site) doesn't change this. I for one don't share his level of distain for NTL but respect his right to be critical.

I often get tired of the religion bashing that often goes on here. I find the easiest way to deal with it is to remember they are only giving their thoughts and experiences.

This is what a discussion site is for.

Hi Bill,

Your help here behind the scenes is welcome (as is mine that I don't go shouting about thqat is given via EMail/PM/MSN)

Let's not forget why you are here-& that's because ntl let their customers down so abysmally. We knew they were going to close .com, & that's why we put this site together-simple.

Nikko-thanks for accusing me of trolling my own site.

At the end of the day, if I received service from BT/Pipex that I did from ntl, then I would probably set up a BT/Pipex related site-as it is I don't so I won't. :)

Bill-I am critical of ntl, but I am also the person that defends them where I feel necessary (just because you don't see it, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen)

Discussions are always welcome, whether it is critical of me or not-I'm used to it. ;)

I must say that even though im not with NTL (anymore) When people say that they have moved to pipex, it seems a relief for them to get away from NTL. after all im sure pipex always listen to their customers and promise the customer something ie. "i will ring you back." then pipex keep their promises unlike NTL. Im sure many people are happy with Pipex's standard of service.

Re: NTL has almost left the building!

There is a touch of deja vu in this thread but I am not going to start another "at the crossroads" thread.

What has happened in the past is gone and we should be looking at the future. Should our impression of NTL stay the same for ever more or should we adjust it as NTL improve, and yes, in some areas I do believe they are improving.

I thought that the change of site name and the supposed move away from the "hell" image might result in a calmer more helpful feel to the site with more input from NTL associates. I expected that the "team" would lead from the front in establishing a new image and whilst some of the "team" are trying to do just that, others seem to want to make it even more "hellish".

How about putting the past where it belongs and concentrating on pushing NTL into the future and helping it to develop to its full potential.

I disagree with you there Russ, this kind of obvious hate by an admin of the site is part of the reason I don't use this site much, as you know I used .com alot (as Imhere) but this place feels wrong now.

So while everyone is entitled to their opinion an admin constantly brining up his dislike for the company that this site was first set up to helps it's customers just makes the whole place look far less professional, and a lot of the time a more uncomfortable place to be.

Re: NTL has almost left the building!

People seem to take faults with NTL to heart more so than if the same thing happened to them with BT or Sky etc, I know people with Sky who have pixelating pictures day in day out sometimes its so bad with the picture sticking its unwatchable, they NEVER phone sky to complain purely because they know Sky will A: Charge them for an engineer to come out and B: Charge them for a replacement DigiBox or Digital LNB.

And I myself had an awful time with BT/Pipex when trying to get ADSL before NTL Broadband was available to my premises, BT said I was within the range of the local exchange, Pipex sent me a modem and filter username and password and then I waited..and waited..and waited..before I called them to find out why i couldnt get a sync on my modem.

They were happy to have been charging me for 2 months oh yes but not so happy to inform me that BT could not activate DSL on my line.

Cue calls to BT finding out why they themselves informed me I could have ADSL but yet they turn down Pipex's request 8 weeks later Im told finally that no it is not possible and then 6 months later I get my 100+ pounds back from Pipex without so much as an apology.

My experience with NTL went as so.

**call to sales**

**Install 6 days later**

**Enjoying 600k Broadband with fantastic ping times and Digital TV That is not plagued with problems when there is heavy rain or heavy changes in the atmospheric conditions.

It took 4 MONTHS for Sky to cancel my subscription, BT were the only ones who to there credit cancelled my telephone line on the date given once my number was ported.

I also had other problems with Sky when the account holder passed away and they decided instead of changing the account name they had to open a new account and tried charging us for a Digibox and dish that we already owned and tried to get us to agree to another 12 month contract.

At the end of the day You can have bad and good people in all walks of life and in all companies and bad and good services from all companies.

I could buy exactly the same brand new car at the same time as a friend and they could have nothing but problems with the same car but mine could be perfectly fine things happen nobody can promise a 100% fault free service.

If you experience problems phone up and by all means ask for them to be rectified but please be polite and dont expect miracles we are only human on the end of the phone mistakes can and do happen and for the most part we will always try to rectify our mistakes.

The point I was making is (since this topic got dragged back up) that a mod of a site is suppose to take somewhat of a back seat, be a little more neutral, now this place feels more like an NTL hate site than .com did at any point in it's last year.

How can a mod or an admin on a site like this possibly be expected to be neutral? Neil helped set the thing up and helps to pay for it. He does so because he has understandably strong feelings on the subject of NTL. To expect him not to voice those opinions is unreasonable. It's fair to expect neutrality in that the mods and admins should give equal space for both pro- and anti-ntl comments, but that's quite different from not expressing an opinion of their own. I don't see any evidence that they are failing to allow fair discussion of both positive and negative opinions of ntl.

I would expect that an owner, admin or mod of a site that claims to be "Your number one Cable Resource" to have an interest in cable and be supportive of that platform.

Neil is quite free to say what he wants about NTL on "his" site but I cannot understand how the dropping of the "hell" name helps the progress of the site when there is so much hatred shown in posts and signatures.

And now we're At The Crossroads again. Which way now - get told off for going off topic, or discuss the issues surrounding Charlie Bubble's decision to start the thread in the first place?

ian@huth 11-05-2004 14:58

Re: NTL has almost left the building!

Charlie_Bubble started this thread and gave us his initial impression of his new Pipex service which hopefully will continue to be a good service for him.

I left NTL for Sky on the DTV front as Sky gave me a far better DTV service than NTL ever did. I still have NTL telephone and broadband but it looks like I will be dropping the telephone when my current subsidies come to an end.

Even if I dropped all NTL services I would continue to visit sites such as this because I prefer to have the best possible service at the best possible price. In areas where NTL do not come up to my expectations at this moment in time I am looking for evidence that they are improving or becoming more competitive and when I think that NTL are in a position to provide the services that I require at a realistic price I will consider moving back to them.

If I do drop all NTL services I will not hate NTL but will be sad that I have had to take this course of action.

The one thing that I do realise is that not all NTL customers get a bad service. No supplier of DTV, telephony and internet products is perfect and we can only judge based on our own experiences.

as the thread was started by this post, I think Neil is quite justified in offering his negative opinions on NTL - as the thread is clearly in the tone of an unhappy NTL customer who has now made the great escape.

To put it bluntly - what total crap. What clique ? Who are its members, what are it's rules. I'm getting sick of people picking out certain members of the team because they don't like ntl and then saying we are all the same.

Let me spell this out for you - I AM QUITE HAPPY WITH NTL. I have always got good service from them, and when I have had the odd issue I have never had a problem getting through to CS (or TS) and my problem has always been resolved in a timely manner.

The team (& site) is a mixture of good and bad experiences (and not just of ntl) - stop seeing what you want to see and open your eyes to the WHOLE picture.

I'm not really sure what that means, I have the same opinion I have always had of ntl-they offer poor service to their customers. That has never changed-even when I received subsidised services from them.

No one receives anything for helping here, no one gets paid etc, people give up their free time to help people who come here (& remember-the majority of those are pi$$ed off ntl customers), but people here offer help on all manner of topics.

I will say, Neil that you did seem a lot more pro-NTL when you were working for them on .com.

True, I do think a lot of people are here to help. Of course, a lot of people are here to $lag NTL off as well, but that is part of a free board.

Actually, seeing as everyone I knew who was on Pipex has ditched them (in most cases for bad service), I can well believe Bifta has had crap service from them. Pipex are like NTL (or any company for that matter). Some people get good service, some bad. I personally have had very good service from NTL.

There's nothing sinister about that. I can see good and bad in my employer, but if I was modding a discussion forum about them I would be obliged (morally if not contractually) to hold back a little on the criticism. Now I know Neil was not a regular employee at ntl, but he and the rest of the team did have an agreement of sorts to provide services to ntl, for which they were compensated. I think the differences in approach you see when you compare nthw.com with Cable Forum demonstrate that Neil and others acted in a circumspect and professional manner while 'working for' ntl.

Well, except for setting up an independent version of the site under assumed names, but I think most of us forgive them for that ;) :D

It seems odd talking about folk over their heads as if they weren't here, when they are, so I'm backing out of this particular discussion now. It's OT anyway.

Re: NTL has almost left the building!

I've been a customer of NTL for the last 10+ years

From analogue to digitial, from BT line to NTL, from Dialup to BB

I have had relatively few problems with the service over those years. The main problems have been setting it up in the various places I have been.

I've experienced both the Langley and Bromley platforms.

I've said on numerous occasions that I LIKE NTL, and have enjoyed the features offered. I have staunchly defended NTL on MANY occasions and will continue to do so.

Everyones point of view is personal, and I freely admit that they have their problems. This site was set up to help and assist .... and it does. Neil still helps out, and advises etc.

This thread was created to sing the praises of 1 person having ADSL. How and why Neil has been berated for expressing his OPINIONS, I don't know.

There are many who disagree with Neil for his opinion of NTL, me included sometimes, but does that mean I'm going to leave the site because of it ... NO

I want to see NTL improve on what they already have and encourage those that have left, for whatever reason, to come back.

Things will change, but is leaving really the answer. It's not Neil that needs the NTL tech help anymore, it's the other NTL customers.

You did come across that way in some of your posts. I also think that NTL shot themselves in the foot when they closed the site. They had a chance to improve their own customer service with the site (not having a go at any NTL employees here), and possibly even re-define what we, the British, expect from Customer Services. Did they take it? Did they hell. They just shut the site down (together with it's succesor) , and replaced it with the Broadband Medic thing.

Towny: I agree, Neil is allowed to voice his own opinions of NTL (as is everyone, pro or anti).

Hey, don't bring me in to it. I'm a bit surprised, above your avatar it says "NTL Network Engineer", if that's correct, you're not exactly a shining example of NTL customer relations.

Neil, I have been trying for a while to point out that there is something wrong with the way that this site is going. You must agree that there is something in this and that something needs to change. If the site carries on in the same vein you will lose many valuable members who decide they have had enough or who you ban because of their beliefs.

What is the REAL reason for owning this site if your belief is that NTL is so crap and is incapable of listening to its customers and being persuaded to change its ways. Why waste your time and money on what you consider to be a lost cause? Remind me again of why you changed the site name at the time you did and what you hoped this name change would achieve.

Enough of what?-my opinion of ntl & it's failure to offer a good service to it's customers? Suddenly we're not all entitled to our opinions?

[Edit]-No one has been banned for their beliefs Ian, everyone is entitled to their opinion-someone even started a thread b1tching about me personally the other day-did he get banned?? (no)

The only people who get banned are people who in our opinion are doing nothing more than disrupting everyone else's use of the forum-that could be in a variety of ways, but nothing to do with their pro/anti ntl 'beliefs'.
:nono:

It's very simple Ian-people will always need help where ntl are concerned, because if there's one thing that ntl are good at, it's letting their customers down, & as long as they do that, we will provide a site for people to get the hlpe they deserve.

Again, you must have your eyes shut if you cannot see what some members are saying and why they are saying it. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion but is there any need to keep expressing it in the way you do and as often as you do when you can see that it is counter productive in keeping good NTL associates on the site who can help in your stated objective of helping NTL customers who have a problem with them.

People always need help with every company under the sun as there are always people who think that they have been let down by them. Do you want to be a first aider who just sticks a few plasters on or do you want to be a surgeon and try to cure the underlying problems?

In Neil's defence, he's only stating his opinion. I really don't think it will do any good reopening the pro/anti ntl debate again. I feel the direction of the site is spot on, and I am perfectly happy helping here whenever I get the chance.

Me...I'm not 'pro-ntl' or 'anti-ntl'.....I am 'pro-customer'. Simple as that.

Good point!

I don't see why people are jumping on Neil - he is just as entitled to his opinion as anyone else here. I had bad experiences with NTL so I got rid and moved over to Sky but, just 'cos I don't use NTL anymore doesn't mean that I (or anybody else for that matter) no longer have the right to express what we feel about it.

Anyway, at least Neil's been consistent - he's always thought NTL were rubbish and sticks by that.

I'd just like to point out that it's no Neil I was having a go at, I was just using his post as an example as to why I feel this site sometimes gives off a less professional feel than it probably could.

It's difficult to say anything else with regards to the site as I tend to get attacked by the same members every time I post.

You see that's the problem, people feel that because someone opposes their opinion, or disagrees with it, that they are being attacked-thats is not the case.

I am disagreeing with what people have posted about me/this site here, but I am not attacking them.

You cannot expect to put forward a point of view & get the hump because people don't agree, & say you are being attacked.

I'm not getting the hump man, I don't mind people not agreeing, it's people who feel they have to argue with me but actually have nothing to say on the subject other than "it's better than .com" so on and so forth.

Like I said I was meraly offering constructive critisim on why I feel this site feels "odd" for want of a better word, compared to how it use to be at the old place.

Just trying to explain why I find I can't use this site on a regular basis anymore.

I do understand, & I know you weren't trying to get at me personally. :)

It will always be difficult as .com was such a success (for various reasons!)

We are not trying to be .com, we are trying to take the best bits & enhance them.

Stick around, post a bit more & you never know-you may enjoy it here! :D

Re: NTL has almost left the building!

If there were not people who had their grievances with NTL then this site would never have existed in the first place.

They are a necessary evil in the constant struggle by the users to get the services that they are paying for, whether they be site admin/owners or just plain users they should all be allowed to put their view of what they think about their ISP whichever it is.

If there was no problems with NTL at all then this site would not exist & the users would not come here asking for help in the first place as they would not need it.

Neil's attitude may seem to have changed since the older .com days, but then wasn't he under some form of contract with them? Its all different now & any restrictions will have been lifted.

OB mentioned to me that Bifta has been having problems with Pipex, although I knew full well about that thread & I think I am it somewhere (if not another like it) where Bifta constantly drones on how crap he thinks Pipex are, getting very hot under the collar about it.

Whats the difference?

"nothing".

Neil should be allowed to say how much he dislikes NTL as much as Bifta can say how much he dislikes Pipex. If Neil was not permitted the right to voice his opinions then why should he even bother with the site at all? why should he put his time & effort into it if he cannot even say what he thinks when everyone else gets to?

I think that a lot of people are being rather unfair to him & expecting much more than they should from him.

Get off of his back, if you dont like it & want to leave the site over something as petty as this then its your loss.
