Wanadoo £17.99 per-month 512k

Why should I stay with NTL when Wanadoo UK confirmed that it is launching a new £17.99 per-month 512k broadband product with a 2 Gig a month cap, not sure what my DL usage is a month but I only surf the net.

I have 600K BB with phone line, I also have a BT phone line. Convince me to stay!

Firstly, I think this is the wrong forum, should be alternatives to ntl/TW. If you only surf the net you'd notice little fifference going to ntl (soon to be) 300k. I'll bet Wanadoo will charge you for a USB ADSL modem as well at that price

It's difficult to do so, bt do a similar thing for 19.99 a month but have a 1gig cap.
Most people on the 600k service will exceed 2gig per month, through downloads etc, which is why they are on 600k as opposed to 150k.

If you ONLY surf, then it is more than likley worth it..... if you do a small bit of downloading then it isn't.

Not wishing to be left behind, Telewest rival NTL is also upping the speed of its net connections for free.

Its services will start at 300Kbps, priced at £17.99, with the top end at 1.5Mbps costing £37.99.

"Our customers want more speed, better e-mail access and more newsgroups to enjoy, and that's what we're delivering," said NTL chief executive officer, Simon Duffy.

Seems stupid to me. Once you've checked a few movie trailers, listened to some radio etc r you expected to pay more then anyway.

Good way of getting customers and then forcing them on the higher tier mind

2Gig / month gee's louise thats low. That makes ntl's cap look hughe. I dont think they'll force you onto a higher teir instead charge you for every extra gig you use.
In our house we do have 2mbit from plusnet and it is shared 4 ways. We do use between 500megs - 2gigs a day not least a month.
That works out at 67.3megs a day. I'd eat that up on 56k nevermind 512k.
Those french sure are trying to be cunning, tho i doubt it'll work

This is ~30GB a month, which is huge compared to 1GB a month!

Re: Wanadoo £17.99 per-month 512k

indeed ntl's cap is a gig a day, which as said is far greater than the 2gig a month wanadoo are offering. its somthing like a £1.* for every extra gig you use

This recent article on ispreview sums up for me the rather silly situation developing regarding these budget introductory unusable cap broadband services:
http://www.ispreview.co.uk/articles/cap/

Broadband should be about much more than just the occasional bit of browsing. You only need to visit a few sites with a bit of graphical content, or have a friend email a few photos to eat a bit of bandwidth. Do that just 2 or three times a week and you start to get close to these appallingly low and unuseable limits.

Do ISPs really think that all users want is lightening fast page updates. Or are these services really just to whet the appetite and entice newbies, who then will realise they've been conned and need to spend a lot more.

If yoiu only browse there is absolutely no need for anything higher than 150k......in fact its debatable whether you even need that or just a good 56k modem dial up provider to be honest!!

A 512K service with a 1Gb cap or 2Gb Cap is utterly pointless in my eyes. That as BT would say is not what Broadband shoukld be about, the whole point of Broadband is enriched media experience.....NOT faster loading HTML pages. If OFCOM are doing a redefinition of broadband they need to look at these opitiful offerings.....it is not broadband in my eyes as it isnt an enhancement of what can be recieved by a 56k modem really, you couldnt stream audio or video, you couldnt download files........POINTLESS

Re: Wanadoo £17.99 per-month 512k

Yeah, the Wanadoo BB tiers seem a bit crap IMO.

£17.99 for 512k, with a 2GB/month cap

- Same price as NTL's 150k ("soon" to be 300k) BB, which has a 30GB/month cap. NTL's 150k (300k) is slower, but still great for surfing the net, & the cap is 15x higher.

£27.99 for 512k, with a 15GB/month cap

- £3 more than NTL's 600k ("soon" to be 750k) BB, which has a 30GB/month cap. NTL's is cheaper, faster, & has a bigger cap.

Why bother having 512k BB, if it only has a download limit of a couple of gigs?

Re: Wanadoo £17.99 per-month 512k

There are people that only want their internet connection for very occasional use but who want the speed when they do use it.

NTLs cap is not the 30 GB a month that is being regularly quoted, it is in reality two to three times that figure. Remember that you can exceed the 1 GB a day on a few days a month.

keithwalton 29-04-2004 00:06

Re: Wanadoo £17.99 per-month 512k

I tend to listen to shoutcast radio quite abit, which uses 128kbit/s which isnt much at the time but it would soon add up.
Really even for surfing i would at least go for 512k just so that pictures on pages load in reasnoble time.
I was on 100mbit uni connection last year and got abit to used to its speed. As afterwards i spent a week on 56k whilst waiting for the adsl to be activated.
and tbh i strugle to imagine how i / we used to cope at that speed.
A typical image from a digital camera would take 5-10mins to load and could fail / timeout. Where as on bb it takes like 5 seconds.

Caps are unfair, and if an isp tries and inflicts it on me i'll change provider and keep on changing until there isnt any left. And on that day i'll learn to live without the net at home

Re: Wanadoo £17.99 per-month 512k

Hmm, At first glance I don't have a problem with Wanadoo having a low cost, but restricted use service. That's on the basis that the restictions are clearly understood at point of sale, and certainly they are spelling that out, on their web site far better than ntl do in respect of the ntl caps. However if there is a cap it needs to still be appropriate to the service offered. BT's 1GB a month is ludicrous for their 512k light service. I don't think Wanadoo is much better.

More significant however is Wanadoo, appear to be hiding the really bad news under cover of their rebranding from Freeserve. Their website now shows all BB use will be capped, and the thresholds are for combined upload and download. Amazingly they make ntl look generous, especially at the 512k level which is restricted to 15Gb a month.

This site and others have had many comments that the upload saturation of BB services is more of an issue than the download. So the combined data transfer does make sense. But I am not convinced any of these limits imposed are realistic. As the limits are total data transfer, albeit averaged over a month, they cold be a severe limitation. Wanadoo's site says the limits will be applied later in 2004 (they've taken a leaf out of ntl's "coming soon" policy). Crucially they say somehow the connection will be restricted for the rest of the month, if the use limit is exceeded, only to web browsing and email, but how they do that is unclear. Supposedly an upgrade path will be on offer for higher bandwidth use, but costs and availability of that are unclear.

Even more worrying is the potential development that Wanadoo are likely to do an ntl, and impose these changes on existing customers. Certainly I can find no concessions on Wanadoo's web site to say that freeserve customers will have concessions.

One wonders how informed the average BB punter is as to the differences in BB services from ISPs or if punters simply are blinded by advertising profiles. One hopes that they would choose similar cost but uncapped ISPs.

Well at least that's a good thing then that they make it apparent that it is capped. Sort of, anyway.

However, Tiscali, ntl, BT et al do not make it apparent in their advertising that the service is capped, only in the small print beneath the advert and terms and conditions, which to be truthful, many people probably do not bother to read before signing up and end up getting locked into a 12 month contract.

Also Tiscali refer to the cap as "surfing time" in their adverts which will confuse the customer if they do read the small print at the foot of the advert - being economical with the truth and rewording the limit will cause problems later when the customer hits the capped limit - it will come back and bite them on the arse when the irate customer calls up demanding why the service has gone down to dialup speed.

£34.99 a month for the 1MB package is a 30GB per month limit

2 Gig / Month is worse than NTL! .. I do just under a gig per day, just playing games! However, i suppose this depends on how much bandwith the game uses, and the time you play it.

ISP's are so lousy over here, 2 gig per month is pethetic!

I also noticed this..

According to Wannado's statistics with 2gb, you can only play 1.5 hours per week of online games!

Well staying under that limit you not going to be doing much downloading, its very likely it will be just activities like web browsing and email, so why not just use dialup or even some of these sub 300kbit fake broadband packages, because unless the webpage is full of big pictures you not going to see much of a difference.

Been using freeserve since I switched from NTL in December.

I suspect like NTL, the statement about caps is more a clause they can use to hit the really heavy users if they feel it necessary rather than an out and out "this will happen".

The Wanadoo caps seem quite low to just be aimed at heavy users though.

EDIT:

Also, if someone on the £17.99/month 512k service exceeded their paltry 2GB/month cap, I think that would be something Wanadoo would take action on - as they obviously prefer people who use more to pay more (as they have different caps for the different priced services: 2GB/month for the £17.99 512k, 15GB/month for the £27.99 512k, & 30GB/month for the top 1mb service).

Whereas NTL's "cap" is the same across all the tiers, & is v large compared to the cap on Wanadoo's bottom- & mid-level tiers.

Wanadoo 512k for £17.99

Just got this leaflet with my amazon order that Wanadoo do 512k access for £17.99 with free modem and connection, plus a free £10 Amazon voucher.

This has got me quite interested seeing that I currently pay £17.99 for 150k, soon to become 256k.

My question to you all is:

1) Is this offer any good ?

2) Do you think NTL will take the 150k upto 512 to compete with this offer ?

Thanks.

1) No, not IMO. The 2 GB cap (a proper cap, not some, apparently unenforced, "guideline" like NTL's) cripples it. Why bother having 512k if you can only download (& upload - it's a total cap on both directions) a total of 2GB per month?

2) Why would they? Pointless, I think. Nothing to compete with. The NTL 150k service is going to increase to 300k "in late summer" anyway. Plus, NTL BB has a 1 GB per *day* limit, which isn't even enforced much it seems. Compare that to a 2GB per *month* CAP with Wanadoo.

Personally, I would much rather pay £17.99 for a 150k (soon to be 300k) service, with a ~30GB/month limit, than pay the same money to have a 512k service which, although faster, is crippled by having a pathetic 2GB per month cap.

150k/300k is perfectly fine for just surfing the net. If you want to download stuff...OK, it will take a bit longer than a 512k connection, but, to be honest, so what? - you don't pay for the amount of time you are online anyway so that doesn't matter. And with a ~30GB/month "usage limit" you can download quite a bit.

Wanadoo 512k...you'll have a faster speed (but I doubt it would be much better for just surfing than NTL 150/300k), but what can you do with it if it has a cap of such a small amount.
