http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3588933.stm

I'm very interested in this.. especially if they do a good job of it.

(not sure if this should go in the "alternatives" forum or not :/ )

Looks good! If they do as good a job with email as they have done with search engines, sign me up!:tu:

Page cannot be displayed this afternoon - not sure what any of you might have seen this morning, but if there was a page there, the fact that it's gone speaks volumes :disturbd:

Pity, I would really like a webmail account from Google.

what do you see? can you post a screenshot? I just get 'page cannot be displayed' and if I search for it on Google, Google's cache of the page is just a blank page.

Aha, but thanks to you I managed to get on the mailing list anyway - there was a field at the foot of the FAQs. :) :tu:

Re: Google to launch webmail service with 1GIG storage limit!!

i was quite suprised by google's decision to enter the email storage market with such enthusiasm as to offer a 1GB inbox

yes i did think it was an april fool, but having read in to additional information, it seems to be very 'profitable' for google, if it really is going to cost them 2$ per GB using advertising to generate revenues, i dont see any reason for the service not to be a success......

i wonder if they will have an attachment upload system for storing large files..................

It looks like Google are just trying to compete with the major portals, good luck to em' I say, the more the merrier, anything is better than hotmail.

We've been talking about this on Orkut and despite the privacy concerns, a lot of people are up for it.
I'm not, simply because I've got more than enough email accounts!

yes i have been reading various commentrys the privacy concerns, as it scans phrases of 'incoming' mail to the inbox and attaches advertisements to the email, it does not read the contents simply attaches the appropriate advertisments to a particular word/email.

Yeah, I've read a lot about privacy concerns, because of the unique ID you're set in Google's cookie and how it can then be tied to your email address, yada yada yada. It's a fair point, but as dellwear says, email ain't exactly a secure medium. I've been reading my boss's emails for years ;)

Or an SMS! The most insecure part of the GSM protocols! All the voice transmissions are encrypted, but SMS is sent as clear text!

Interesting concept this targeting of advertising linked to the mail content. I assume there will be good spam trapping, or all the advertising will be for penis enlargement, viagra, girls who want you to...

Yet Hotmail and others scan incoming mail for viruses etc and that is not a problem? Both are done by computer, not humans.

I was abit concerned about joining because it's mainly geared for Apple Mac users. Looks good though!

When do you guys reckon Gmail (aka spooky mail) will launch?

Well, looks like gMail is in for a rough ride - now a US senator is objecting to it due to 'intrusive' advertising.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3621169.stm

Personally, I don't understand this point of view - yes, they're going tobe adding adverts to mails, but they are doing so as part of a free service that no-one is under any obligation to use. How is it intrusive if people are willing to accept the terms and conditions?
