[GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I wanted to put together this to compliment a couple of threads that are around about how to go about flashing your Virgin DIR-615 D2 to dd-wrt firmware. There are other guides about the web - if you'd rather use them then fine :)
I'm not explaining why you would want to do this so if your happy with what you've got, don't go messing. For those that want to read more about dd-wrt read up at http://www.dd-wrt.com. Quote:
1. dlink-revb-factory-webflash.bin 2. dir615d2-revb-ddwrt-webflash.bin Quote:
Quote:
2. Open your router homepage (eg http://192.168.1.1) and log in 3. Select Firmware Upgrade within the Application menu 4. Use the file: dlink-revb-factory-webflash.bin (NOTE: Ensure you use the FACTORY one) 5. Wait about 3 minutes whilst the new firmware is uploaded and the router restarts (NOTE: Do not interrupt this process) 5a. Set your network card to the following IP settings: IP Address: 192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 DNS: 192.168.1.1 6. Open you new firmware homepage (NOTE: this will be http://192.168.1.1) 7. You should have the standard dd-wrt page. Create a username and password and save changes. 8. Select Firmware Upgrade within the Administration menu 9. Select the second file: dir615d2-revb-ddwrt-webflash.bin 10. Again wait until this has finished uploading and your router restarted (NOTE: Do not interrupt this process) 11. Change IP Addressing back to 'Automatic' You should now have a fully functional dd-wrt on your router. Enjoy! Remember to run through configuration on how to connect to the Internet and setup your Wireless Connection again. 12. Connect to your shiny new dd-wrt firmware (http://192.168.1.1) and configure to your hearts content! If you need any help using dd-wrt refer to the dd-wrt homepage or post here and I'll pop on now and then and try to help. |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Didn't work. After step 5 I can no longer access the router or the internet.
I guess I'm in the market for a new router then. Probably a good thing anyway ;) |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Try setting your computer IP settings manually to 192.168.1.2 then try
IP: 192.168.1.2 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 DNS: 192.168.1.1 Can you access it now? |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Just a quick question here
The DD-Wrt firmware does it have same HNAP Vulnerability as the Dlink firmware itself? |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I think the HNAP Vulnerability is within Dlink's firmware so my personal thoughts would be no, dd-wrt won't be affected but I'm not 100% certain.

ace!
Mods, any way you can give me permission to edit my first post and keep it up-to-date with changes that the good people of Cable Forum find? |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
After flashing for the second time, I set the IP back to "automatic" and it's back in business. A million thank yous :D

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Rather than PM a mod, can the next mod to see this add/replace the following steps to post #1. Thanks.
5a. Set your network card to the following IP settings: IP Address: 192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 DNS: 192.168.1.1 6. Open you new firmware homepage (NOTE: this will be http://192.168.1.1) 11. Change IP Addressing back to 'Automatic' 12. Connect to your shiny new dd-wrt firmware (http://192.168.1.1) and configure to your hearts content! |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
once you apply the ddwrt firmware, you will not want to go back to the "official" firmware
one of the reasons I did this was to set up a VPN to my home network, so now I can VPN onto my network and access resources at home from any place |

Can I ask, being an owner of said router, is there any real advantage to this third party firmware change?
|
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
If your happy with what your router does now then no, no real advantage.
If you wish it did more then, yes massive advantage! Read up on what you can do with dd-wrt and if you want some of it then flash - else stick to what you have. Personally, my DIR-615 was unusable until I flashed. |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Well I decided to give it a try, and the process worked fine - now running dd-wrt.

The only thing I would say is it's more difficult to configure than the stock firmware (or perhaps "it's easier tot get it wrong" would be a better way of putting it). There are simpler alternatives that provide the stability and security and some of the features - OpenWRT and Tomato are both worth a look as well (not sure whether both of these are compatible with your router though. A word of advice to anyone considering installing DD-WRT - please check the list of supported hardware very carefully. Check the model and hardware version number of your device before installing. Just as with trying new computer operating systems for the first time it might be a good idea for people to get a spare router for trying out any third party router firmware for the first time.
Get on Ebay or somewhere and buy a couple of cheap supported models for whichever firmware/s you want to try out.;) |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
ok thanks for clarifying it for me. I'm going to try this guide later after i finish some uni work lol. If it bricks my router i dont mind so much since the wireless connection is too unstable with the virgin firmware so I would rather buy a better router if thats my only option. It started disconnecting a lot whilst downloading torrents and stuff in the past few days, but prior to that it was working fine under the same conditions so I don't understand why. It is definately the DIR-615 that is at fault since hooking up to the cable modem directly is fine and unplugging the DIR-615 resets it and it works again for a short period before the same thing happens.
|
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
i installed it now and it went well :D Had some problems at first but now i found some good settings and its a lot more stable

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
damn i have some problems again now and i cant get it to work. i think the original firmware worked a little better for me but i tried to install it and it says "upgrade failed", how can i downgrade back to the dlink firmware?

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
at what stage does update fail?
Are you doing the correct file at the correct time? |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
forget that last post, just after i posted it i managed to boot into the emergency room recovery mode which i tried before but i did it wrong first time. Now i have flashed to the 4.11 latest dlink firmware although i have an image of the original virgin media firmware too just incase, cos you can actually get it from dlink ftp site ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/Virgin_Media/F...1.00VG_B02.bin

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Thank you so much for this guide. Having been with Virgn for a few years I thoug I would try and 'blag' a nice new fast wireless N router and got the DLink.
I was ready for using it as a dog toy until I found this post. It really is a c**p bit of kit.... Any way, your guide worked perfectly and the only extra step I had to take was rebooting the cable modem. Probably because I needed to re register my MAC address with Virgin (?). Either way, up and running now and amazed at all the nice new options available to me... Thanks again :D |

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I followed this guide this morning and it worked fine, thanks. :) Just to note that you don't need to manually set the LAN IP, subnet etc when you flash over to DD-WRT (step 5).
ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew does the job perfectly and saves a bit of hassle. :D I'm finding throughput a little unpredictable with this release. My usenet downloads are swaying between 5.5 and 6.1 MB/s whereas on the stock v4.11 firmware I was getting 6.1 MB/sec rock solid. I think I'll flash back for now. Hopefully Tomato will release a compatible version as I love their firmware and find it much lighter on resources (and has better throughput) than DD-WRT. |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Obviously I had crap files, cos I is up and running with DD-WRT - thank you ACATHLA for all your help, you are a legend. Now - time to play :) Thanks again :) |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Just changed the firmware all is working fine apart from only beening all to connect to the router over the wireless at a maximum 65 mbps. I was able to connect at 300 mbps before the firmware update.

Thanks for the guide, flashed mine but have a few issues:
1) My (virginmedia) netbook Windows XP and internal n wireless will only connect at 65mbps even with full signal; it did 300 before flashing 2) My vista machine running chrome and IE keeps stalling during page loads and fails to load pages fully when on wireless, the connection does not look to drop and I am 2 feet from the router. Hard wired its fine 3) Wifes xp laptop seems fine too. I have seen a build 14114 here (http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtop...=asc&start=240 Anyone running this one? |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Im not running the 14114 atm - the original build in this thread allows me to run in G-Mode only (as thats what all my clients are) - but the next build I tried removed this option (just gave N only, or mixed) so I reverted back. Going to try the 14114 at some point.

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Went for it and now running newer build:
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/04/63.png Get that on a download via wireless, so throughput is ok, its just pages take forever to load and appear to load in 10 "spurts" of data a few seconds apart. Hmm Web is just not useable via wifi, yet directly wired its brilliant! |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Hi and thank you for this guide.
I just have one question. Why is the button on the side of this router permanently on red now? Is this normal or have i missed something? Maybe a setting in the dd-wrt firmware i am missing? By the way i am on the r14144 dd-wrt firmware. Thanks in advance for any advice/info on this ;) EDIT: it's ok i sorted it now after some more reading through the DD-WRT forums. Also got the internet light on the front to be green like it was by default. With this code in Administration/Commands: sleep 15 ; gpio disable 9; gpio enable 8; gpio disable 12; gpio enable 14 ; gpio disable 11 ; gpio enable 13 Fully up and running now. Love it! :D Oh one more thing. My DIR-615 is hardware version D1 (It's one i bought some time back) and like i said this firrmware works perfect on this hardware revision. |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I went back to D-Link's 4.11 firmware today to compare it since using DD-WRT and for a while and it actually worked quite well and then the poor speeds came, so back to DD-WRT, but I have noticed some things with DD-WRT.
With DD-WRT quite a lot of links take a while to load, click them again or multiple times and they load pretty much instantly. Despite the poor speeds, D-Link's firmware always opens links with one click. This happens using the ISP's DNS servers, using OpenDNS' in the router and when using OpenDNS' on the adpater. Is there a setting you can point me towards in DD-WRT's admin pages that I might have overlooked that will fix this? Tonight we are having the same poor speeds with DD-WRT as D-Link. Our 10 MB broadband has been close to that with DD-WRT, but tonight it's doing a D-Link and we can't even get half of that in various speed tests and I'm using the same settings as before. Any ideas? A download from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/ usually runs over 1 MB per second, but at the moment I can't get half that. I'm getting really sick of Virgin Media's service and the D-Link router, but I shouldn't have to go out a buy a new router to get the most out of our connection. The one they supplied should be fit for purpose. Any help greatly appreciated. |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Well i just did a download speedtest from the link you provided with a BF1942 demo at 133Mb.
This is what constant speed i got http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/i...g/Untitled.jpg Also whenever i do a speedtest with say http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ i allways get just short of my maximum 20Mb download but a little short on the upload usually http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/res...1955&v=9713101 Just thought i would post so you have a bit of a comparison Oh and i don't experience any of these "Slow links" as you described at all with DD-WRT. No difference for me than with D-Links official firmware. The main thing that sold it for me with DD-WRT's firmware is the fact that my son and i can now play the same CS:S server together. Unlike with D-Links firmware we had allsorts of strange error's were it wouldn't let another one of us join from the same network without the second person trying to get on only to get kicked all of the time. And believe me when i say i tried everything to get it working on the official firmware. It just didn't want to know... One more thing mjpartyboy, have you checked all your power level's? |

Infact i can quite honestly say i've had no problems on all three DD-WRT firmwares i have tried on this router so far apart from the little niggle and the side button (But even that's sorted now). The only difference between my router and ever other persons is that my Hardware version is D1. Surely that can't make a difference. Can it! |

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
All, I read this thread with interest having updated my D2 to DD-WRT recently. Before finding this thread.
First I want to help clear up a few issues, so if any of the following helps take it. I didn't flash mine 2x first with factory then with the secondary bin. Just did it with the dir615d-revb-ddwrt-webflash.bin and works fine. Can only assume factory flash has a modified header to allow D-Link fw (not VM fw) to be uploaded to it. Guessing non factory flash is ok with VM fw or an older DD-WRT fw. Current Firmware Version DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/24/10) std - build 14144 When I was on orig VM fw. I had a major problem. There were up to 6 wireless devices linked to the router and it needed to be rebooted at least once per day. It would slow to a crawl and only a power down and up (not software reboot) would fix this with 6 wireless clients. When it was used with 4 or less clients I hardly ever had to reboot it. Take this for what you will. Other speed issues occured at the same time. When the household went up to 6 devices I thought it was a good time to update from 10Mb to 20Mb package. This resulted in the average speed being lowered from 9.8-9.9Mb to around 7Mb with occasional and I really do mean occasional bursts into the 12Mb range. After many frustrating calls terminating in India I finally got hold of 2 Uk based engineers who actually did some tests and stopped telling me they were "refreshing the line" as was all I could get out of India. The detail that I got regarding my slower line was that the UBR that the 20Mb package ran on was having intermittent faults and that was the cause of the problem. The solution was to drop back to 10Mb which I did and it fixed the problem immiediately. No problems since hitting 9.8 on speedtest.net. When on orig VM fw and on 20Mb with UBR problem. I had a problem mentioned in an earlier post in this thread. Namely that clicking on a link was no guarantee that things would happen. Needed a few clicks sometimes before the next link would even start to load. Even when the router was just reset. Had a fully stable 54Mbs link. During intermittent and good periods. I'm not saying that a dodgy UBR in your area is the cause, and if you suspect it is. Call VM in the morning to be guaranteed a connection to a UK engineer. Who ever you get be polite. I work in a call centre and it's not fun talking to a ranting punter. About to upgrade both 615's to new firmware. After upgrade never arrived, I placed a phone call to say it didn't arrive. The agent sent another and they both arrived on the same (next) day. With DD-WRT I'm able to use the 2nd router to make a wireless bridge (used DD-WRT Bridge repeater, with no "virtual interfaces" as I couldn't get a Client Bridge to work)to the first on orig VM fw and have a wired network on the 2nd floor. With a very stable link after I upped the output power to 160. Able to stream HD media through 2 Victorian house interior brick walls, to an xbox 360 using it. Theres tons of guides for setting up xbox 360 to media centre on XP, Vista and Win 7 so search for it instead of asking me for help with this. Guys I wish you all the best of luck and if my advice helps tilt a glass for me. |

Hmmm
I have managed to flash it to the 2nd firmware, can access the gui fine. However when I have the cable modem plugged into it, it does not pickup the wan ip and I have no internet access. I plug the cable modem back into the pc and the pc picks up the wan ip fine. In the setup page I have the wan config set to automatic dhcp configuration which the help slider on the right says is correct for cable isp's. any ideas? ---------- Post added at 05:16 ---------- Previous post was at 04:00 ---------- Ok I got the net working, I had to clone my pc mac on the router. Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt

I always unplug the power from the modem when updating the router's firmware, then once that's done I power up the modem and let it settle down before powering up the router. It will then grant the router's MAC address a new IP, which will be different to the IP the modem issues to your PC's MAC address. I'm guessing you haven't unplugged the modem, which explains why cloning your PC's MAC is working with the router. Quote:
|
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
yes I deliberatly kept the modem powered up.
so the issue perhaps was I didnt let the dhcp expire. shame on the firmware upgrade procedure, I dont really fancy reconfiguring it all again, but probably later on I will do it. browsing speeds seem to stall sometimes using this router which is why I want to try and upgrade the firmware. |

thanks, but for now I decided to stay on this firmware. Seems stable now and performs well enough.
is a bit annoying that when reconfiguring settings it resets tcp connections but other then that seems a decent router feature wise. |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I ended up upgrading :), the old 13xxx version was for the dir600 which bugged me, I did the same as paul didnt bother with the 30/30/30 rubbish and works fine.
ran that command to fix the red led and saved it as a startup command. |

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
yep thats why I added it to startup, I assume that will fix that problem. If it doesnt it will be ok I guess as I dont plan to power cycle the router and will probably be powered on for months at a time.

yeah I am thinking of going back to 13xxx, as I understand it the only real issues 13xxx has is wireless, I can avoid using wireless on this router and I will just put up with it saying its a dir600. This new version seems to have occasional problems browsing and the blue light is annoying me.

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Been reading about this DD-WRT update for the last few days after not being too impressed by the standard D-Link firmware and the general performance of the router.
I'm wondering though does the DD-WRT firmware really improve performance? Or does it just allow you to change more options? |

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Build 14573 is out:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/o...ink-dir615d%2F ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSla...dlink-dir615d/ I haven't tried it yet and don't know what's different to the recommended build 14311. |

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
yes it is confirmed.

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
The folder for build 14473 is now correctly named and 14537 has been released.

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I've just upgraded to build 14573 and all the lights on the front are now green and work like normal and the side light is off.

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Just upgraded to 14573, all seems ok atm.

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Out of curiousity, do VM mind you using this firmware?
I notice when using the factory firmware that VM provide, the router slowly becomes more and more unresponsive as time goes by, needing a reset every two weeks or less That doesn't happen with the DD-WRT firmware. |

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
mjpartyboy, yeah it seems when flashing the router runs a bit off initially but after a day or so runs better. This build I am on is fine also, but I will probably upgrade since the newer one fixes the led's.

I cant see how thats much different to choosing the option on flash to bootup using defaults. |

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I am on the 14537 build now, I did go to the newer one first but has some important stuff missing of the status page.

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I've reverted to build 14311, because the link hanging issue I was having with 14537 got too annoying. I can live with the unusual lights for better performing firmware.

I have no link hanging issues but I'm using wired, my laptop over wireless is connecting via my adsl router. |
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I upgraded from build 14311 to 14594 a couple of days ago and am pleased with the results so far. It's performing better than the other builds in between, but I do still get the have-to-click-a-link-more-than-once thing occasionally.

Has anyone tried DD WRT on the D4 version of the 615 router supplied by Virgin?

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Once you have upgraded to the DD WRT firmware, do you still need to update using both files dir615d-revb-ddwrt-webflash.bin and dlink-dir615d-factory-webflash.bin, my linksys only needed one file to upgrade with when a new firmware was released so getting a bit confused on why there is two files to download each time.

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
just the ddwrt-webflash after the first time.
|
Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
Thanks for that

Re: [GUIDE] Dir-615 to dd-wrt
I have upgraded to 50 Meg yesterday, and upgraded my 615-d4 to dd-wrt rev14594 straight away, but I am unable to achieve 50 Meg over wired.
Has anyone achieved that ? I have not enabled any other featues, but will use bandwidth shaping/QoS later when basics work. |
