TV Schedule - Summer 2020

Welcome to the tv series schedule thread. I should point out that whilst every effort is made to include all series which may be of potential interest to all forum users, the majority of the series are US produced series and thus the air dates provided are the US network air dates. This list serves to bring exciting tv to your attention and if you wish to watch them on terrestrial tv/sky/virgin etc further queries will need to be made for the air dates. Given the rise of streaming services it will come as no surprise that some of the series are Netflix and Amazon and thus will be available if you subscribe to those services. Please click on the individual series links for further information regarding the series and the network/services which they are available on.

As I mentioned above I endeavour to include a variety of series to appeal to everyone and as such if you feel I have missed something out which may be of interest to the user base please feel free to say so and I will add it to the list.

In previous years I have done the thread updates in bulk update stages as we move from the season premiere dates in September, mid-season premieres in January and then the summer season. Going forward the thread will be continuously updated as new series and information becomes available and aired series will be removed so check back every month and there will no doubt be something new which may be of interest.

From Wikipedia ;

Quote:

On August 16, 2019, the first season was available to stream on Netflix markets outside of Russia and China.
I've looked at the first episode - its Russian, with English subtitles and dubbing.

It basically looks (and reads) like a Russian version of Humans.

I can live with that. Dark Matter starts off a bit too light hearted and cheesy for me but it got better and they cancelled it just as it was getting more serious for me which is just how I like it.

It's amazing what you learn if you bother to read. Terrestrial tv is rubbish and I have made many a comment before that even in British produced mags (e.g. SFX) they are very good at bringing you the latest info on series and they'll say "US air date: day/month, UK air date: TBC". Unless it is a hit show like GoT we are absolutely rubbish over here at getting series on time. Agents of Shield is a perfect example, it is a Marvel tv series so you think it would be worth it's weight in gold purely for the brand yet the most recent season didn't start on tv over here (last month) until 2 weeks after the entire season had finished in the US. Some series run about 6 months behind and when they start in September/October in the US they won't be available over here until March the following year.
Because most of the series are US series the information for air dates is more readily available and easier for me to link to for information if anyone is interested and wants to keep an eye out for a new series (e.g. the upcoming I-Land). US series and networks and also very regimented and regular in their scheduling. There is no way I am ever going to try and find out what series is airing when on Sky, BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and whatever else over here. I pulled my hair out trying to do it a few years ago for a friend who loved The Vampire Diaries. It aired on ITV2, I think a year had elapse since the previous season had aired in the US and there was still no info on when it was returning to ITV2, it is an absolute joke. I try to list the most popular series forum users will be interested in along with the US dates so at least you know whether it is coming soon or not till after xmas (e.g. Westword and Star Trek Picard) and then it is up to you to keep an eye or google for when it is available over here.
Years ago back in 1996 before I had Sky my tv viewing revolved entirely around Star Trek TNG and Buffy on BBC 2, Wednesdays at 6 o'clock. I would go absolutely schizo when the darts was on, some flipping flower show or whatever else because out of all the programs the BBC would remove from the schedule to show those events, it would be Star Trek and Buffy and not the shit which came before or after. One of my friends at school had Sky and I don't know how far behind the US he was (obviously pre-internet days) but he was way ahead of where the BBC was with DS9, a whole year I think. Way of the Warrior had just aired on Sky and he was so hyped telling me all about it. He recorded it for me (good old VHS) and I watched it out of sync with where I was. I enjoyed it but obviously didn't have a clue what was happening in the context of the story. I think I was only half way through season 2 on tv and knew nothing about the Dominion and by the time I caught up months and months later I was like "ahhhhhhhhh, it all makes sense now" and enjoyed watching it again. The BBC were so rubbish that you could even rent more recent episodes from Blockbuster on tape before they were on tv and did that with Voyager religiously. I got quite chummy with the branch manager who was also a geek and he rang me every time a new video came out and I would be straight down there for it.
As much as we love to moan about streaming services and all these subscriptions and channels, at least it keeps competition going and makes broadcasters think twice about being lazy with customers. If paying for the BBC were optional they would be out of business because nobody would pay their tv license, it is an absolute rip off when you think of the quality and wealth or material available on Netflix for the same price or soon to be Disney+ for half the price.

The Guardian's review
Quote:

To answer the two questions you’ll be asking about 20 minutes into Netflix’s new castaway thriller The I-Land:

1) They tell you how the 10 strangers with wiped memories came to wake up simultaneously on a desert island at the start of episode three, so skip there if you just want to know before you quit;

2) No, this isn’t some deadpan spoof of bad sci-fi, with the lumpen writing, catatonic acting and thuddingly inelegant plotting there to make a postmodern point. It’s really as bad as it initially seems.

Well, almost. Once The I-Land does reveal its hand – basically it’s Lost meets The Matrix, although there’s a lot less to it than that – it improves purely by dint of making us wonder what handbrake turn into a new field of randomness it’ll perform next. Moreover, nothing can be as poor as the bewilderingly disastrous opening episodes.
Hollywood Reporter
Quote:

Because I made it through the first 10 minutes of Netflix's new limited series The I-Land, I endeavored to make it through the first episode. Because I made it through the first episode, I endeavored to make it through all seven episodes. Because I made it through all seven episodes, I'm writing a review of The I-Land. To paraphrase J. Robert Oppenheimer paraphrasing the Bhagavad Gita: Now I am become the sunk cost fallacy, the destroyer of free time. Eventually I'm going to have to write a book about The I-Land.

And I would write that book, too! Netflix's The I-Land is awful, but it's the kind of awful that leaves me with questions at every turn. No aspect of The I-Land works and every bad aspect builds on the bad aspects before in a way that makes it pretty clear that nobody involved could have been under any misapprehensions about the quality of the endeavor.
Roger Ebert
Quote:

The ‘I’ stands for Idiotic. If you put a group of teenagers in a room and showed them a few episodes of “LOST” and “Westworld” before asking them to write their own program, they might come up with “The I-Land,” a new Netflix series written and produced by Neil LaBute. It is a bafflingly horrible sci-fi show, the kind of project that leaves your jaw on the floor, not unlike the first time you saw Tommy Wiseau’s “The Room.” It’s only enjoyable at all in that transcendent way that truly horrible things can be enjoyable. The dialogue is stilted to the point that one wonders if it wasn’t run through Google Translate, the characters are as shallow as a parking lot puddle, and even the production values are shocking in their ineptitude. Some talented people got caught up in this flaming disaster of a program, and it’s downright sad to watch a couple of them struggle, but the whole thing starts to feel like the product of a lost bet.
Well, that's saved me some time this week...

me too. Based on these comments I wasn't going to watch it at all but I was talking to some friends about it last night who had seen it and they said it was "ok" so out of curiosity I watched the first episode. I wanted to turn it off after 5 minutes but I persevered through the first episode. The acting and script are terrible and all I keep thinking all the way through was "forget B-movies, this is a B-series" and felt like something you would see on the Syfy channel.

I don't understand why the actors, producers, episode directors or anyone else don't pick up on this during production and someone doesn't say "do you know what, this isn't going to work, we need to change it and do something else".

It was ok, I guess, but nothing special.

I haven't watched The Expanse yet. It is going to be amazing being able to watch it all in one go but then it will all be over and I don't want it to be. I am watching Runaways first, one episode a day, and then I am going to do the same with The Expanse.

Re: TV Schedule - Fall 2019/2020

Kept it to two a day, allowed me to watch presumably in 4K (My Netflix shows nothing more than HDR for this title)

Incredible though. Will re-watch with my other half over the next week I reckon. Some of the timelines going on lost me off in a few places I think. This is so crammed full of a Story arc, lore and side things that it's not a case of binge the 8 hours and done.

Be this and The Expanse again over the holidays. Was guilty of watching a fair few episodes of The Expanse on a mobile.

Utopia Falls drops on Hulu 14th Feb. In a genre bending take on a coming of age story, a group of teens in a distant future colony uncover an ancient forbidden archive of historical, cultural and musical relics. This discovery forces them to question everything they've been taught, and use the power of music to ignite change in their reality to expose the truth. No trailer yet.

Possibly but what perked my interest was Joe Mallozzi oversaw the writers room and wrote episodes 3 & 10 and co wrote episode 1.

I'll be giving it a look.

the film was cack and this doesn't look much better, it literally wants to make my brain explode; it doesn't make sense.

I have just added a couple of new series which are coming out this months. Check out Endlings, Black Moon and Omniscient.

Paul 16-01-2020 19:46

Re: TV Schedule - Spring 2020

This makes no sense to me ;

Quote:

Omniscient is set in the near future, where every citizen is constantly followed by a small (almost imperceptible) drone. The machine feeds a supercomputer with data, to which nobody has access. Crime rates are almost zero, since criminals know for certain that they will be captured. The Omniscient System seems perfect until a young woman named Nina discovers a hug, but the crime is not reported by the System.
If "nobody has access" then what use is it ?

"criminals know for certain that they will be captured" - um captured how ? (no one has access remember).

"Nina discovers a hug, but the crime is not reported" A hug ? .. its a crime to hug in the future ?

:confused:

Head exploded.

Hugh 16-01-2020 20:04

Re: TV Schedule - Spring 2020

"Hug’ should be ‘murder’, and I think the supercomputer does the capturing
