Connected.. but not working!

:(

Hi Guys,

Well today I went out and bought a shiny new wireless laptop, and a netgear router.

I use telewest broadband, it usually connects from the back of the modem to a usb socket. My pc has an ethernet thingy at the back too tho.

So I connected the cable modem to the router using a rj45 cable, and the laptop wireless connection works.
I connected the desktop pc via ethernet from the router with another ethernet cable, and it says connected but the internet doesn't work?

Sorry I'm not very good at explaining these things, can anyone offer a solution?

ben :dunce:

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Erm did you turn all the equipment off before changing cables?
Switch all off (shut down PC properly)
connect
turn on SACM
wait for lights to lock/ settle
turn on router
wait for lights to lock/ settle
turn on PC
open browser and follow instructions for router, you may be better off using an ethernet cable to connect to the PC till you get everything set up properly.

What's SACM? (sorry)

Mmmmm, pc firewall maybe

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Aha so wireless and internet are fine for laptop but not PC? Have you checked in your internet explorer, tools, internet options, connections that you are not using a proxy?
Also have you run the software that would have come with the router? Did you use the ethernet cable that came with the router and is it plugged in to the correct port on the router?
If you go to start, run
type in
cmd
press enter
type
ipconfig /all
press enter
what information comes up on the screen? (at least one should be an IP address)
Are you running a software firewall?

benukb 08-12-2006 17:23

Re: Connected.. but not working!

So far i've changed the connection (it comes up at local area connection 3) so that it automatically tries to find a ip address.
I've connected it to the right socket, I have McAfee Firewall but nothing comes up on the screen... i'll do the igconfig now

Paul K 08-12-2006 17:28

Re: Connected.. but not working!

What router is it? If it has 4 ports have you tried a different port on the router? Does a light on the front of the router come on when you plug the PC into the router?

benukb 08-12-2006 17:36

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Yep, I tried different ones.. the light is on but isn't flashing to indicate that its transmitting data.
It come up at the screen local area connection connected, but nothing is actually connected.. this is what the ipconfig says:

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Can you access the router config page in IE from the desktop? Have you checked what your connection settings in IE are?

benukb 08-12-2006 17:44

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Nope I can't access the modem from the desktop, and the internet setting are the same as they were before. :S

Paul K 08-12-2006 17:47

Re: Connected.. but not working!

What are the settings? You are going through a router now which means some things can cause issues. Have you rebooted the PC again just in case. Also, only one pc can access the router config page at a time so make sure the laptop isn't logged into it at the time that you are trying from the PC.

Oh and ......
what router is it....... again ;)

benukb 08-12-2006 17:54

This one http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/116601 netgear, what should the settings be?

I tried logging in again doesn't connect

Oh yeah and I rebooted again

Paul K 08-12-2006 17:56

Re: Connected.. but not working!

And you have connected the way the manual states? In IE, tools, internet options, connection, LAN settings, have you got any information in the boxes or any boxes ticked?

benukb 08-12-2006 18:00

Re: Connected.. but not working!

No information in the boxes and none of the check boxes are ticked.

Paul K 08-12-2006 18:06

Re: Connected.. but not working!

If you type ipconfig /all into a cmd box on the laptop does it show the same information (more or less)?

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Have you manually specified any settings for your desktop PC before now? As your previous ipconfig info for the desktop shows a different subnet mask for some reason. Have you tried going into your control panel, system, hardware, device manager and removing the entry for the network adaptor (right click the entry and select uninstall) and then rebooting?

benukb 08-12-2006 18:30

Re: Connected.. but not working!

I will try that now..

The adaptor had a red cross on it, so i've uninstalled it and restarted now

Paul K 08-12-2006 18:36

Re: Connected.. but not working!

If it had a red cross then it wasn't functioning correctly which would cause issues ;)

Lord Nikon 08-12-2006 18:44

Re: Connected.. but not working!

if that doesn't cure it open a command prompt and type in the following

netsh int reset all

but first try right clicking on the item with a red cross in it and clicking on "Enable"

although, in retrospect, the fact that it was listed in the ipconfig listing would indicate that windows thought it was running, and therefore can't be in a disabled state...

when you doubleclick it, is there an error listed?

benukb 08-12-2006 18:46

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Okay now nothing is coming on screen, and the lights are the same on the router and at the back of the machine, there's question marks next to ethernet controller, SM Bus Controller and USB controller.. help! :(

Paul K 08-12-2006 18:48

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Sounds like you need to reload your motherboard drivers if possible, try right clicking each item and select update driver. If that fails can you tell us the make and model of PC?

benukb 08-12-2006 18:50

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Oh god, my poor pc! :(

I tried the update thing and it didnt work. It's a Mesh PC h matrix 2400+ (that's what it says on the label on the back)

Paul K 08-12-2006 18:58

Re: Connected.. but not working!

You did only right click and remove the item with the red icon ? Strange, the red cross just means the item is disabled for some reason. Did the PC come with CDs?
Would get the drivers for you but Mesh will only allow registered users on to the database

benukb 08-12-2006 19:03

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Interesting, I looked on the website and you can search for drivers but it doesn't have any for ethernet controller, or SM bus controller :(

Paul K 08-12-2006 19:06

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Anything for the motherboard? Is the ethernet port built into the motherboard or seperate? Did you look for any CDs that came with the PC. It's strange that windows couldn't find them as they are normally saved in the system folder and protected.

benukb 08-12-2006 19:13

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Nothing on there at all, my system is registered on there and they know whats inside the pc but no driver :S

CDs?
Have you tried a system restore?

No cd's I got cd's with the laptop could u get anything from that?

Paul K 08-12-2006 19:38

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Nope the drivers are different for the laptop. How did you not get any CDs? Did Mesh not even give you a restore CD?

benukb 08-12-2006 19:46

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Nope

JohnHorb 08-12-2006 19:55

Re: Connected.. but not working!

The 'auto-configuration' address you are getting - 169.x.x.x - indicates that the PC is unable to get an IP address from the router. Try manually setting the PC's IP address to something in the same range as the router config page, e.g. if the router config page is accessed as 192.168.2.1, set the PC to 192.168.2.2. You SHOULD then be able to access the routers config page. If you can't, I would suspect either the cable, or the network card in the PC. One thing that does raise a slight alarm bell is the description of the adapter as Cisco Systems VPN adapter. Do you have any VPN software installed?

Think he has more problems than that. Ben did you try a system restore? Really we need to get your drivers sorted but Mesh are making it difficult to do.

Trust me to only read the first page before posting :dozey:

Paul K 08-12-2006 20:09

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Oh the rest is just as good :( Ben, can you try a system restore? After that we may have to try and figure out a way around the Mesh login for support situation.

JohnHorb 08-12-2006 20:18

Re: Connected.. but not working!

To go back to the original problem, and my post:-

What is the Cisco Systems VPN Adapter?

The VPN Adapter is a "software-only" driver that provides an interface to solve protocol incompatibility problems. With this installed, more applications are able to run while connected with the VPN client. Removing this adapter from your Network Connections Control Panel may cause the VPN client to stop working properly.
See the Cisco Release Notes for more information on the VPN Adapter.

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Do you know what motherboard is in the machine?

If not I will need bios string information or chipset information from you

Chances are it's either a VIA motherboard or an NVidia NForce series, my advice to you will hinge on which

if it's NVidia then you need to go to the NVIdia website and download the Chipset drivers, pop them on CD or equivalent and install them on the PC, if it's VIA then you need to google for and download the hyperion 4 in 1 drivers and install those on the PC

Failing which, how close are you to the Oldham area? lol

Paul K 09-12-2006 09:48

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Easiest way to find that out would be to install http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
and find the listing for the motherboard

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Well I opened my pc and the socket is right next to/attached to two USB sockets that are faulty. I decided to go into Maplin on my break at work and I bought a NIC/Ethernet Card, it seems to work fine now!

All I have to do now is secure my the wireless side of the network, how can I do this?

---------- Post added at 20:48 ---------- Previous post was at 20:45 ----------

I'm sorry, thanks for your advice guys I really did try everything, the NIC card was £7.99 so I guess it was worth it really

Paul K 09-12-2006 20:50

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Cool, looks like something was wrong with the hardware. Securing the wireless is just a case of using a WEP key. If you have one of those set already then you are secure enough for most things :)

I secured it at WPA level, it's working great now.. although the laptop say low signal downstairs it seems to be working fine

I get low level readings on my wireless desktop and laptop, all works ok for me, including gaming and surfing at the samr time, in fact, gaming on both pc's ( 2 of ) and the laptop, at the same time :D :tu:

Re: Connected.. but not working!

If the router is right next to the PC it could be interference from the PC/ monitor etc. We moved ours up onto a small cupboard away from the PCs and now we get full strength.
