Will it be better than 'The Tripods' though? ;)
Looks good, God bless the BBC :) |

The BBC adaptation was good on its own terms but having departed so much from the novels it made it very hard to pick up the story in The Pool of Fire from the unresolved cliffhanger at the end of the TV version of The City of Gold and Lead (for anyone who had to do it that way ... I didn’t :D ) I’ve never quite understood the reason for most of the changes to the basic story for TV, although I suspect it was the budget. The Masters feature much more heavily in the novel and the characters spend a lot more time in the alien environment. |

Paul, are you the editor of the series, how could you say before it was broadcast?
Was it about aliens or fornicators? |

The War of the Worlds is a major international co-production that has already been broadcast elsewhere in the world. Hence copies of it are out there. I suspect that's one of the reasons the BBC hasn't kept it for its Christmas schedule (it was originally earmarked for Christmas 2018 but the post-production ran into difficulties with the special effects). The other reason would be that the reviews haven't been brilliant. I watched it tonight as broadcast. It was good enough but it looks like they haven't been able to resist the urge to use it to be massively preachy about early 20th century conceptions of morality and empire (extrapolating far beyond anything HG Wells may have had in mind). |

It was largely just dull - and confusing as it kept switching to the future. (Hey guys, look, we beat them - talk about embedding a massive spoiler). Also, as Chris noted, yet another preachy BBC production (much like Dr Who now). |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
It's a shame people try and see 'agendas', particularly if the BBC are involved. HG Wells was a socialist, so if there is anything, it's just reflecting the author.
Finally made a start on my Blake's 7 boxset (3 episodes down, 49 to go, never seen Mrs K look more depressed ;) ). No doubt that would be dismissed as lefty socialist claptrap these days, with freedom fighters against the system. In 1978 it was just entertainment with wobbly sets as a bonus, nobody asked or looked for anything more. |

I gave it a pass. I've seen too many attempts at the story and I'd rather just read the book now.

Re: The War Of The Worlds
Well that was disappointing. I have no idea what they thought they were doing with last night’s episode. They span about 15 minutes of story into 60 minutes, the CGI was ropey and I’m almost certain there were still FX missing.
Having looked forward to this ever since it was announced (two years ago I think?) ... disappointing. |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
It was totally pants, the whole thing was a lesson on how screw up an adaptation of a classic story.
I don't think anyone has managed to do it justice ever. The definitive version remains the musical version! Episode 1 was slow, and just seemed to be a outlet to show how pretty the lead actress could look (if you like redheads). Episode 2 the tripods where actually quite good, I liked the way they moved. There was no further explanation of why the smoke killed them. No Thunderchild. Artilleryman Superfluous. Episode 3 not just Ep3 but the time jumping forward and back didn't do anything to enhance the story. The aliens didn't look good. it was just not good, I think budget constraints may have affected it. |

Re: The War Of The Worlds
Been watching another version on Fox.......it’s not really “War of the Worlds” I.e tripods and all that. It’s more like Survivors.
It’s bleak. Slow moving. Set in the U.K. & France. (Anglo/French production) But I’ve found it strangely compulsive. I’m up to Ep 6. I don’t think it’s for everyone but I’m enjoying it so far. |

It certainly is unexpectedly compelling, normally I'd given up by now on something which is so obviously a slow-burner. |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
The second season is out (first few episodes) but so far I've only managed to find them with hard coded Dutch subtitles.

Re: The War Of The Worlds
Season 2 is also on Disney+ and it looks like it is weekly with up to ep3 currently available. I can find normal eps without hardcoded subs.

At the time of posting yesterday I'd not long got back off my holiday and not checked my systems, they had picked up English subbed Season 2 Episodes 1 to 3 yesterday morning. I've watched Episode 1 tonight. :D |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
Got episode 1 and 2 with forced subs, none of the rest as of yet have them. Skipping through ep3 I can not find any French but will wait and see subs first and watch them all together
edit appear to have them for 3 so far |

Season 1 Episode 1 is probably the most exciting/action packed of them all.
In general its a slow burning show/story, and yet it just about manages to keep you hooked. Same with Season 2, I've seen the first three so far. :) |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
Same here and I can't say I'm all that impressed so far.

Yup, missus spotted that earlier. Though I’m still curious to know how General Maximus is seeing it listed in Disney+ right now.

I am afraid it is classified
|
Re: The War Of The Worlds
Windscribe has servers that do not flag when using streaming services using international ips maybe he is using something like that
Saying that it is not meant to be airing till July but the rips I have are labelled DSNY so dunno ---------- Post added at 23:38 ---------- Previous post was at 23:31 ---------- It is available on Epix via Amazon Prime .com |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
There are Epix rips out there as well (for episodes 1 & 2).
Season 2 is definitely more 'pacy' than season 1, I've seen episodes 1 to 4 now. |
Re: The War Of The Worlds

My question was really more prompted by suggestions further up the thread that season 2 had yet to be released anywhere that wouldn’t automatically generate foreign language subtitles - if it was on Disney+ in the USA, for example, you might assume the “usual sources” would have a rip of that already. |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
Quote:
The usual sources do have rips of what airs in the US. It is airing every Friday and the rips are up on the Saturday. I have 4 with EN forced subs |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
Quote:
There are also Canal+ Rips of all 8 Eps, but sadly without the English subs (They have "English" Audio, but still with French bits in them). |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
Erm...you certain about that?
|
Re: The War Of The Worlds
About what ?
|
Re: The War Of The Worlds
About the lack of subs?
All 4 eps from Season 2 I discovered on each launch day with English subs onscreen for English and French where spoken respectively. |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
I think you have misread it. :)
The lack of subs was referring to the canal+ rips of all 8 episodes. The Disney Rips (which now go up to Ep 5) have forced english subs, the epix rips have hard coded english subs. |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
Not sure which versions I have but I’m pretty certain they all have the Canal+ splash on them during the opening.

Yep, Ive just finished watching Episode 6.

Re: The War Of The Worlds
So does someone else have first run rights in the UK? I’m just wondering why Disney+ has dropped the whole of season 1 but isn’t giving us season 2 (yet). I’m just hoping they don’t repeat the mess they made with Marvel Runaways, putting 2 seasons of it on Disney+ and selling season 3 to SyFy UK at the same time. We had to wait over a year for them to finally add season 3 to Disney+UK even though it was available on the US platform from launch.

Please remember this thread is tagged UK TIMELINE.
Only season 1 has been released in the UK. It was released recently enough that many people will not have seen all of it yet. SO PLEASE USE SPOILER TAGS, and don’t needlessly ruin it for those who only get to watch an ep or two per week. :( |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
My bad - I assumed everyone was up to speed.
|
Re: The War Of The Worlds
They’re currently filming S3 in Newport today.
I guess that’s the upside - plenty of corpses laying around with shops looted etc. |

Does anyone remember the 80's or 90's War of the Worlds TV series based off the 1950's movie? They did the same thing. Tell me is it worth sticking with, be honest. |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
There’s a fairly interesting twist on “that” which could be worth sticking around for but in all honesty I’m pretty underwhelmed.
If you’ve got nothing else to watch then it’ll pass the time. |

Re: The War Of The Worlds
Having finally finished season 1 last night, I don’t think the big reveal is necessarily what it might first seem. There’s a great deal of ambiguity around what exactly Emily has found. Can’t wait to get stuck in to S2. :D
|
Re: The War Of The Worlds
That’s just it, there is a twist involved but from what I’ve read online it’s quite divisive. It’s certainly an interesting twist on what was originally a twist in itself and my hopes rest in what they do with it now.
IMO it has to form the basis of S3 otherwise I can’t see it coming back for a 4th season. I really hope to be wrong though… |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
If you are looking for a fast paced, action filled alien invasion, this is not the show for you.
I think part of the problem is the title - it is a "war of worlds", but not quite in the way people think. |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
Well I finally finished it. I half guessed the "twist", which in itself opens up all kinds of paradoxal questions. I agree I don't know where a 3rd season would go.
|
Re: The War Of The Worlds
They finished filming just up the road from me at the weekend, from what I could make out they were doing some “action” scenes and the word around here is they were using new characters, or at least ones people didn’t recognise from previous eps.
Here’s hoping they do well with S3… |
Re: The War Of The Worlds
It will be interesting to see where it goes, I'm assuming it will be set in that pre invasion time.

I'm watching the weekly Epix releases (on Amazon).
They have hard coded English translations for the french parts. Episode 3 was this Sunday, and carries on until Ep 8 at the end of October. It been quite good so far. |

On a related note, this happened: :D |

Just finished series 3. What a disappointment.
Without giving spoilers, the parts involving astronauts was interesting but the series ending was quite a let-down for me. |
Re: War Of The Worlds
Just watched the final episode, I cant say I was disappointed.
The ending seemed ok to me, and given how it finished, I'm thinking thats it, there wont be a season 4. |
