The General Tennis Thread
What a performance tonight by Andy Murray, beating Nadal in the US open semi-final.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/7602257.stm 6-2, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 He now faces Federer in the final tomorrow night and i wouldn't bet against Murray winning after tonights performance! He somehow managed to out-muscle Nadal throughout and really looks like a Grand Slam winning tennis player now :) |
Re: Tennis
Yeah, I'm not much of a Murray fan, but he played well, and it's good to see that Nadal's constant cheating didn't earn him another undeserved win here. Looking forward to the final tomorrow, but I hope for Petchey's sake Murray doesn't win. That would literally make his head explode. :)

Re: Tennis
Can someone tell me which channel is showing the US Open final tonight, please?
I'm on Virgin Media and am not used to the sports channels. The listing on VMs tv listing page says its on Sky Sports 1 tonight but the listing on the actual VM box doesn't show the same information, as if its not on (I dont know why they should be different!). Thanks. |

Re: Tennis
G-r-e-a-t match.
Murray has matured and evolved so quickly over the last 18+ months. Federer raised his game - and well played. And... credit to Murray for sending him there. |
Re: Tennis
Yep, hopefully he won't let it deflate him & he'll continue to progress...

Re: Tennis
Good game, Murray played well but Federer was back to his awesome best, thats why he's the greatest tennis player ever imo, 5 times in a row now he's won the US open, amazing. It could have been very different though if the line judge had got the call right in the second set that would have seen Murray break Federer's serve. But Federer definately deserved it overall.

Re: Tennis
Great to see Federer back in slam-winning form. With finals at the French and Wimbledon, gold at the Olympics and now a US Open title, it's another terrific year for the great one, and this in spite of a bout of mono as well. Incredible.

Re: Tennis
Don't forget folks,Murray is a lot younger than Nadal or Federer and his time will come provided he can avoid too many serious injuries.:)

Re: Tennis
Could this finally be the year that Murray wins a Grand Slam? I'd like it to be Wimbledon ideally, but I'd settle for any GS at all this year.
As for Sharapova, I hope she is coming back to her top form again. I'll admit it, I have a massive crush on her; and my following of her career sometimes borders on the obsessive side of things. |

I feel sorry for Murray. Unfortunately for him Djokovic is just too good for him. Only marginally better though. I really wanted him (Murray) to win a major tournament. I'll be rooting for Nadal now.

Re: Tennis
Sharapova was woeful. So many unforced errors, rarely seemed to be able to take control of a point, seemed to be just hit it at Azarenka at times when he wasn't under pressure. Azarenka on the other hand just grabbed everything that came her way, commanded every ball, competed for every point.
Not a great final. |

I'm pleased with that, Eurosport do some great coverage of tennis. Only place to see Australian and French Open tennis nowadays.
I just hope that they can do a deal for the US Open, as SKY never seem to do a good job of tennis. In my opinion anyway. |

Re: Tennis
Federer survives a scare.
Can someone explain to me though why Boris Becker is on the commentary team? The man is a nightmare. The quintessential humourless German. No personality whatsoever in reporting, coupled with an accent that's so thick that anyone that isn't German will struggle to understand what he's reporting on? |
Re: Tennis
Well done Murray...
|
Re: Tennis
A great match, one which Wimbledon tried it's best to ruin with their stupid 11pm rule. You have matches that go on until well after 12am at the US Open and to think if they'd gone off at 11pm with a result reachable in the next few minutes would've been stupid to make them come back in 40 hours for just a handful of games potentially. Which takes me to my next point about Wimbledon, why not play on the 1st Sunday like every other major tournament to ease the pressure on the timetable? I don't care that it may be because of tradition, the tournament needs to get with the times.

Re: Tennis
The commentary team were very clear the 11:00pm cut off would be "an authorities" requirement. Indeed Tim Henman's comments suggested it was the Council (Merton?) and the Police. That would be a health and safety thing of those who would be stranded without transport - note that public transport in the UK is geared around work hours, and not leisure so when people might most need it after an evenings entertainment when they could have had a drink and can't drive it isn't there (but that is off topic). Wimbledon is also in a residential area and of course the planners will have placed restrictions that you can't disturb the affluent neighbours.
Of course before the roof Wimbledon was finished for the day when there was no light. Indeed the BBC, by scheduling their BBC2 today at wimbledon for 8:00pm expects most play to have ceased by then. The Murray match was still at it's beginning. The roof creates a safety net for an overrun. But the real problem here was not the 11:00pm curfew, but that Centre Court play did not start early enough to allow for three full length matches to be played within normal play hours. |
Re: Tennis
That is another good point about the time they start play. 13:00 is too late in the day to start play esp when 2 out of the 3 matches scheduled for centre could potentially go 5 sets and last for a few hours each, therefore starting at 11am or even just a 12pm start would help a lot.
|
Re: Tennis

I managed to get tickets for centre court on Thursday and saw Murray win and then Nadal lose. It was a brilliant experience, especially when they closed the roof. If anyone gets the chance to go i would definitely recommend it. |

Re: Tennis
When Murray wins he is British, when he loses he becomes Scottish. As far as I am concerned, I am very (insert swear words here) that Federer won. Way too arrogant for my liking, shame he has won 7 titles now. Hopefully Sampras comes out of retirement and shows Federer how real tennis champions act.
|
Re: Tennis
Erm, he's only the most graceful player to have ever played the game. It's a delight to watch the man play, and he fully deserved today's win. I also don't find him arrogant at all. I'd have liked it if Murray had won, but he lost to the better player today.
|
Re: Tennis
Federer is the greatest, quite literally when it comes to Tennis. He doesn't come across as arrogant at all in my view either.
|
Re: Tennis
I too am glad Federer won today. He deserved it and has been an exemplary champion over the many years he's been at the top. Contrast his professionalism, dedication and self control with some other leading sportsmen...
Murray played well but just wasn't good enough when it mattered most - I guess those are the times when the sort of experience and self belief Federer has add up to the difference between success and failure. I've never been a big fan of Murray's on court attitude but was very impressed by the way in which he spoke after the match. He'll have won himself a great many new supporters (me included) through that moving and sincere display of humility and emotion. A great match and who knows, Murray's day at Wimbledon may still come. |
Re: Tennis
Yes, there was something very nice to see Federer win another grand slam having gone two years without one. I hope he has a couple more left, you don't want to see such a great era come to an end and I think that's why Federer enjoys so much support still.
|
Re: Tennis
Further to that: very few players who lose the #1 ranking manage and get it back. Federer has now done that twice now. Many people had written him off but he's proved them wrong. He may have been lucky not having to face Nadal or Djokovic, but he played some awesome tennis when it mattered. Stuff that makes your jaw drop. Well done, and well-deserved, Roger. We love you.

Not sure I 'love' him tbh but each to his own I suppose... :erm: :D
