6 Manchester United players, 2 Liverpool players. Says a lot about United's squad really. :)

Premier League team of the year: Edwin van der Sar; Glen Johnson, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra; Ashley Young, Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo; Nicolas Anelka, Fernando Torres

Schwarzer has easily been the best goalkeeper this season. VDS wouldn't even be in my top 3. The clean sheet record "he" set was primarily down to Man United's defence, he's a liability and well past his best.

Sarretje is the best. End of :)

No idea why Evra, Torres and Anelka are in it. Evra has been way below last season. Torres has been injured all season. Anelka had a few games when he was playing great and has done rock all since.

No Lampard? No Rooney? No Shwartzer?

Also (Rose Tinted, Sorry) I was suprised DaSilva didn't get young player. For his age and for a 1st season he has been storming. Although Young winning it, once again, cements the fact that he can't get in the England team is insane.

Giggsy has now won every possible major domestic honour - well deserved too.

An award based on sentiment rather than this season I'm sure. He's only started 12 games this season hasn't he?

Having said that he is my favourite Man U player and he should have won it ages ago. :)

Sentiment based award for sure.

I'm suprised Lampard wasn't even nominated. He practically carried Chelsea through some games and has achieves a consistent high standard.

I thought there might be an Everton nomination too. Arteta was outstanding before his injury and Lescott, Jagielka and Baines have had great seasons.

I think it is partly sentimental but also based on his age, the high quality performances are coming from a 35 year old, he's putting players 10 years younger than him to shame in the 24 matches he's been involved in in the league this season. He may have only started 12 games but they have pretty much all been against big clubs in important games and they've all been top performances.

As for Lampard, the only reason i think he's not got a look in is because the vote was taken just after Christmas, he only really started performing after Christams imo so missed out. I don't think he would have won the top award but would have been close to getting in the team of the year.

Hasn't he got a very good disciplinary record too?

Only one red card in his career and that was playing for a dodgy international side. ;)

So Stoke, Hull, West Brom (twice), West Ham, Fulham, Blackburn and Portsmouth are big clubs in important games now? That's 8 of 12. I guess his player of the year quality is why he had to play the full 180 minutes against that world famous powerhouse West Bromwich Albion.

If that's the reason for Lampard not being chosen, then how on earth has Torres made the team of the year? He's been injured for a large portion of it and only returned after Christmas.

The team of the year and player of the year are a joke. For players like Ireland, Lampard, Alonso, Hangeland, Jagielka, Baines, Schwarzer, Laursen etc etc to not be mentioned is a travesty.

I think this sums it up nicely:

Quote:

The outrage of the PFA awards is not the victory for sentimentality but the omission of both Xabi Alonso and Frank Lampard from the nominations.

The Chelsea midfielder's consistency and longevity is phenomenal. The under-appreciation of his perseverance, commitment, fitness and hard work by his PFA peers is an inexcusable oversight that only serves to partially explain why, of the league's absolute elite, only Lampard has exceeded his natural talent. His success is the product of graft rather than craft and the revelation that the 19 or so saves made by Edwin van der Sar during Manchester United's run of clean sheets made a greater impression on his league peers is a depressing explanation for why the majority of Premier League footballers outside the big four are no better than average. They don't have to possess the outstanding talent of a Fernando Torres or a Cristiano Ronaldo, but they should at least be able to match and appreciate Lampard's dedication. Instead, they've opted to laud a player who has started just 12 league games.

It is equally disconcerting that the quality of Xabi Alonso's passing has been passed over. His nomination would have been a nod of encouragement to a facet of the game that should be encouraged and it is little wonder that England continue to struggle on a world stage when our nation's footballers cannot spot a class act at the top of his game - what a lucky escape Rafa Benitez had in the summer - when he is pulling the strings right under their noses.

I don't remember the criteria for winning player of the year was to have played in x number of matches ;)

Personally, for me Vidic should have won this award hands down, but i wouldn't say any player this season has been outstanding, the level of football this year has dropped imo, United are top by 3 points with a game in hand and we haven't been anywhere near as good as we were last year, i think that sums it up really. For me Liverpool haven't really improved a great deal this season, it's been United and Chelsea not performing as well as they have been. No player has really shone/stood out and deserved the award so i think it's good that a player like Giggs who is a model proffesional gets the award before he retires, rather than someone who doesn't really deserve it. I know it's supposed to be an award for performance over a single season but i think this year has be an exception for a player who has been around at the top level of football for nearly 20 years delivering performances of the highest level.

As for the team of the year, the only player i think who deserve to be there who isn't is Lampard. I think the other players are about right but there are players like Alonso, Jagielka, Rooney who have performed well this season but i can't see who i would swap them for in that squad.

It's not, i didn't imply it was either. I was just disproving the flat out lie of "they have pretty much all been against big clubs in important games".

He's also played in the games against Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton, City and Villa though.
