Portion of chips at £4.50?
In North West Leeds, Midgeleys (a really good fish and chip shop) sells a large portion of chips (enough for two people) for £3.45. A good size fish and chips is £10.75, but it really fills you up. |
Re: Moans and Pet Hates
Down near Cambridge a regular portion of chips is £3.79 which is enough for 2 people and large is £4.99.
|
Re: Moans and Pet Hates
'Cheap as chips' isn't that cheap anymore :(
When they start charging for 'scraps' will be be the end of days.... |

My diesel is now £2.23 per litre, that just over £10 a gallon.
Yes I put BP Ultimate in, but even still, Standard diesel is £2.00 per litre in BP & Sainsbury's |

It'll be several years before I'm confident enough to get an electric car due to the serious lack of infrastructure for charging in this country, not everyone can easily charge at home or frequently enough. I've just bought another petrol car and I think my next will also be petrol in 6 plus years time.
My moan... Squirrels dug dozens of holes in my lawn when I'm trying to get it to recover from the heatwave! |

We're still on a ridiculously cheap night-time tariff of 4.69 p/kWh, but even when it goes up next July I'm confident it'll be well under 10 p/kWh. To put that in to context, I used to get about 300 miles out of a £60 tank of petrol - would cost much more now I'd wager. The car we've got now uses about 30 KW per 100 miles so even at 10 p/kWh that's £9 to fill it up. Well worth a few mins inconvenience once every 18 months. We used to pay about £300/month petrol and £250/month gas and electric. Now we've had solar and batteries fitted we're paying £0/month petrol £140/month gas and electric and we're £1200 in credit. |

50 years from now, people will look back on this era and it will seem like that to them. Quaint and a bit ramshackle and hit and miss. It is certainly the case that driving electric requires a little planning, especially if you’re going any great distance, and TBH if you are going long distance it is annoyingly expensive because the charger operators are absolutely gouging the market due to lack of local competition. But if circumstances permit, and you can plan for it, then electric motoring is cheap, clean and really quite fun. |
Re: Moans and Pet Hates
Granted electric motoring seems much cheaper than petrol . . however if you can't afford an electric car and also don't have (again can't afford) solar panels and batteries the only alternative is the petrol car you already have . . and the bus when the car reaches end of life. ;)
looking long term, who the heck will need a car anyway when everything is bought and delivered online :D |

Some good improvements, and some bad to counter. During Covid they reduced our service to 2 buses an hour, but only just reinstated the 3rd bus making it every 20 mins which helps a lot. The online tracking (when it works, is very helpful). They now have a screen to tell you where you are and how long to the next stop. But the voice of this is quite loud and ends up really annoying. But it's handy for those that are travelling without knowing the route. The bad news though, is that they've scrapped a lot of the price plans. My wife gets the bus to work every day, a yearly pass was £590, then it went up to £700. Now they've scrapped the yearly pass and now they only offer a 3 monthly pass which is £215 which bring it up to £860 a year. Luckily we ended up buying the yearly pass on their app before they ended it and got 3 years worth stacked up saving nearly £500. Bus prices are a rip off. Glad to have a disabled bus pass at least and to be able to use before 9.30am next year will help a bit. |

Re: Moans and Pet Hates
If you work 5 days a week, and have 5 weeks holiday, plus bank holidays then 52x5-33 = £681 per year, not a rip off at all. In 2027 it will be £454.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates
As it stands here, it's £2.40 a single fare or £4.60 a day pass. Without the passes it would be £1044.20 a year.
Next year the price of the single will be £2 so will be £4 daily. So £908 (Extra if you use the bus in your holiday/weekends) 2-3 years ago a yearly pass (using the app) was £580 and £600 online. Which then went up to £650 last year. This year they've scrapped the yearly pass and now penalising workers that rely on the bus to get to and from work. The best choice now is a new 3 monthly pass at £215 so a year now would be £860. So quite a jump from £650 to £860 in just a year. |

Re: Moans and Pet Hates
I heard nothing about this until a radio report this morning.
The Minimum Unit Price for alcohol in Wales has been increased from 50p per unit to 65p per unit. A 500ml can of beer or cider will rise from £1 to at least £1.30. A 70cl bottle of 12% wine will rise from £4.20 to at least £5.46. A litre bottle of 40% spirits will rise from £20 to at least £26. The extra money was supposed to go into the pockets of "small shop owners". But it is going to the brewers, distillers, wholesalers and distributors. And it attracts extra VAT of course. The 65p MUP was introduced in Scotland in September 2024. In 2025, there were 1,133 drug use deaths registered in Scotland, marking an 11% increase from the previous year and maintaining the highest fatality rate in Europe. |

Thing is the buses run whether full or empty . Yes it will use more diesel if people are on them but as with most things they do not see that. A full bus of passengers paying £2 will earn a hell of a lot more revenue than an empty buss charging over £3
|
Re: Moans and Pet Hates
It costs me £2.50 more to get a cab back from town which drops me outside my home. I'd wait for a bus if it was £3.50.

I went to give the lawn a quick mow because it has 80% turned green again and It's still a mess(thanks squirrels!) and long so thought this would be the final cut before it gets too wet.
The battery on my mower was having second thoughts, I got 50% done before it ran out of charge, so now have to wait an hour or so until I get enough charge to finish. |

Hypothetically if you lived in Wales (close to the English border to make it worth while), popped across, loaded up your car boot with gin and then drove back - you are not going to be stopped and made to pay the difference. Similarly order from Amazon, the actual ‘purchase’ might be legally in Dublin, or London, or Norwich, just the delivery is somewhere in Cardiff. And the rules state that the ‘purchase’ has to be made in Wales. |
Re: Moans and Pet Hates
Lots of other options for booze then but amazons normal spirit price is normally pretty good if you are not fussy in brands. Got to say though it is punishing venues and stores
|
Re: Moans and Pet Hates

Of course there's the argument that jobs are then created through the need for delivery drivers (including all the returned parcels), but those drivers also don't pay business rates and/or rent on town center premises. |
