Nigel Twiston-Davies is hoping The New One can continue his progression as he takes a hike in class for Thursday's John Smith's Aintree Hurdle.

The five-year-old showed he is the best young horse at this distance when winning the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

His trainer said: "He'll have to keep on improving and let's hope he can. It was a fantastic performance and he deserves the chance at this level."

Menorah jumped the last in front and appeared set for victory, but First Lieutenant's stamina kicked in and he wore down Philip Hobbs' charge to score by three-quarters of a length. Even-money favourite Silviniaco Conti made a couple of errors as the action hotted up and was a never-nearer third.

Fully deserved after being the bridesmaid for so long.

Having taken up the running turning in, he was run out of it by Benefficient and could only finish second but gets the chance to redeem his reputation over an extended three miles.
