Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

yeah but there is plenty of P2P and illegal material downloaders on 1meg that are at least restricted by the speed, which when they go 10meg won't be, can see a major hit on the network when we all go 10meg

how pooey is that.. I'm stuck with that..

That's about right for a 2meg line. And why are they crap because you had to have a new STB? If you were really that desperate for 2meg you could have a SACM fitted...

Standalone Cable Modem, why will you have to wait until they make a new box, and by the way NTL do not make "boxes" they are made by 3rd party companies and NTL just has to twiddle their thumbs until a new one capable of what they want to do arrives.

SACM
Stand Alone Cable Modem

And if you have a new silver samsung then you will NOT have to wait for a new box to be made as it can easily acheive speeds upto 38mbit(IIRC)

I agree fully with the comments about everyone been upgraded to 10mbit. There is going to be congestion at peak time no doubt about that the question is how will it be managed. I really hope ignition was right and there is going to be traffic shaping because on the current congestion we are getting packet loss etc. Are NTL planning on rolling this out without upgrading their congested peering as well?

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

the best way to manage congestion is to upgrade the network so it can handle the speeds NTL are upgrading to.

Also from things Jimbo has said, effectivly this data comes racing over to the UBR as fast as the internal NLT network can carry it, the UBR then feeds it out to you at the pace that your account is set to recieve it at. Now I don't know how the packets are stored at the UBR, but by slowing these users down may create congestion at the UBR that could impact the 10mb users. You would need a techy UBR type person to clarify that.

Because I do not agree with people paying for more GB's of bandwidth. Broadband should be unlimited and you should pay for the speed you require and do what you wish with your connection. You should not have to be checking how many GB's you have downloaded this month.....They are calling it an "Upgrade", but it could also be a called downgrade because they will be enforcing caps on everybody.

You lads all have the 10MB line and download whatever you like when you like.I'll stay on 1MB but at 10% of the price :D :D

Well i can only dream. :p:

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

Makes me laugh. Everyone is quick to fire in about Speeds and Caps and anything else they might complain about should they have the 10Mb line.

But none of you have it yet, you've not even experienced a week of a 10Mb line let alone a month to complain about a Cap which most people wont even go over.

Wait til you actually have something before you complain about it.

I haven't read the entire thread but what happened to the uncapped tier? I thought the top one was going to be uncapped. Or is this just people speculating?

Hans Gruber 24-10-2005 21:11

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

maybe 8mbit is one of the new unlimited tiers

(although I doubt it :erm: )
