As I see it, I'm paying for the top tier and have been since BB with NTL began (as a home user). I would expect to remain on the top tier because that's what I want and that's what I'm paying for. My Pace box was swopped out for a Samsung when I requested the (free) upgrade to 3Mbps (from 1.5Mbps), free of charge - I was/am paying the premium price for a fast connection. I have requested the upgade to 10Mbps so I really expect a free upgrade again. The fact that the delivery service is different shouldn't be my problem. I'm still paying the premium price - I want the premium service. That all sounds a bit bolshy when I read it back, it isn't meant to be like that, just calm, firm and polite. |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Just to add to that. NTL personnel have repeatedly made the point on here that we are paying for a service. How NTL deliver that service (e.g. whether through a tatty old refurbished Pace box or a brand new Sammy) is up to them. This argument cuts both ways.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Well just had the blue NTL 250 installed and now on 10mb. Woohoo. Spoke to customer services and confirmed that they had now cancelled my stb connection as I do not want to be charged for both. CS also confirmed the upgrade had gone through on the computer Free of Charge so I would not have to pay for SACM upgrade.

I can 100% guarantee you that if everyone were maxing their connection at the same time you wouldn't get 2Mbit, however everyone is never maxing their connection. Unless of course ntl make so much money out of internet services now that they can afford to give a 5k card to less than 200 users (assuming a 2 downstream card) - not likely :) I certainly could tell you what the planning guidelines were aiming for as far as user density and users per downstream goes, I'm just not going to :) |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
My Modem was installed yesterday, after a lot of hassle (5 phone calls and endless queing) it works, I presmued that they would auto cancel my stb broadband as I'm now switched to SACM, but I guess with NTL I should never presume - I'm not ringing them again though, yesterday was enough !
Every thing seems cool, except broadband plus, which now seems to think I'm no longer a member, ho hum.. I'm getting 1.1 meg from Euro sites and about 650k from US ones on a single stream, which seems pretty good to me - I did tweak my RWIN which raised the US downloads from 550-650 but that seems to be the limit for a single stream from America, can anyone else get higher than that from the USA in one stream ? cheers Ian |

ntl eng just came to replace my ambit 100 modem due to faulty ethernet port
Downstream9330 Kbps (1,166.3 KB/sec)10076 Kbps (inc. overheads)Upstream493 Kbps (61.6 KB/sec) 532 Kbps (inc. overheads) Also fixed the problem of only getting 5 meg :D |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Sorry if this has been said before (as this thread is HUGE)
What amazes me is that they went ahead rolling out Samsung Boxes for people to be upgraded to 1.5Mb and I don't think they even looked into the future with this. I mean, it can only go an extra 3.5Mb, is that a sound investment?. It seems like a stupid move by them as all they have done is create more work for themselves. Instead of upgrading us to Samsung boxes they should have given us a seperate modem in the first place and that would have saved them (and us) the hassle. I'm still on 3Mb. When I rang I got the feeling they didn't want to put me up to 5Mb and seemed insistant that I fill in an online form to get them to upgrade me to 10Mb. I'm not expecting it until January now, I remember what a pain it was to get them to upgrade me to the Samsung box. I do like the samsung boxes though, nicer than the Pace boxes. |

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Ahem! People on the 1MB and 2MB tiers are receiving 10MB, but their modems are restricting this to 1 or 2MB respectively (via the config file). I don't see the difference. As NTL people keep pointing out (quite rightly), we are paying for the service, not the delivery equipment, so if they are providing an up to 10MB service, they should provide the equipment to receive it. If they are providing an up to 5MB service, they should be open and say so, and price it accordingly.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Why do they even supply modems at all? What is wrong with Buying them online and you choosing what to buy, how much to pay and so forth. ADSL ISP normally give you Free some crappy modem but at least you can buy a router / modem to suit your needs. This would then stop them having to PAY people to collect them when people terminate the account and so forth. I am sure there is a reason why they supply them and not sell them and maybe even then people would complain that they bought Modem XXX and now it wont get the full speed yet people who bought Older Routers with 10mbit ports seem happy enough to go and buy a new one.
One the things that is pretty standard in IT: Everything gets Better, cheaper as time goes on - This also Includes the Equipment NTL Use to supply the connection (that 5K card that was mentioned). |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
i got my 1st bill 2day since the upgrade...and it shows "10 Mb (75 GB)"!! It seems they are serious this time :dozey:

To allow people to use any modem means having to run PPPoE a la AOL over cable modem. They don't collect the SACMs anyway, not really worth it for a few quid of hardware. EDIT: Time for a part 4 pls moderation chaps. :) EDIT2: That 5k price is a substantial discount on the list price, and a bulk price - these cards will of course be cheaper in the future however ntl likely bought a huge amount of cards in bulk to obtain that price - the single unit cost you're talking over twice that. In short it still isn't feasible to have enough bandwidth available to guarantee 2Mbit to every customer on a cable area so pretty please don't worry yourself about exact contention ratio and planning :) Also things get better yes, but cable is a bit different on that score, DOCSIS 2 line cards go down in price because DOCSIS 3 line cards are made to replace them in the market and cost more than the DOCSIS 2 cards do at present to sting the early adopters a bit. |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
When they fit a SACM,do thy split the signal from the box outside to two,one for the STB and one for the SACM?
