Upgrade to 30Mb broadband for just £30

So, will this be available as a self install?

To clarify do new customers still pay £30 extra to go on the 30mb speed instead of the 20mb speed?

I am not in work today but as it is replacing 20Mb I can see no reason for them to be charged £30 as they will already have the Superhub and that is why we as customers with standard modems are required to pay £30 in order to receive the correct equipment for the 30Mb and above tiers.

You will receive a Superhub in the post as a self install but a few customers may need manned installs as per below.

30Mb Offer: Upgrade from 20Mb to 30Mb broadband for no extra monthly fee. A one-off £30 fee applies. Manned installation may be required by a small number of customers however the £40 fee will be waived.

While I fully understand the reasons behind this I am lost as to why pay £30 for a USB adapter when they can be bought from under £10 upwards?

I can see there being an awful lot of users who will be sticking to 20mb, i doubt that many people will be prepared to pay the £30 charge. Lets hope within a few months the charge is dropped then everyone will be on 30mb and they'd have some nice bragging rights compared to the competition with the exception of BT Infinity which averages at 37mb in real world tests.

If they upgraded 10mb users to 12mb and gave them docsis3 modems they could do away with docsis1 completely which i would assume save virgin alot of money?

Because we will only support equipment supplied by us and this device is covered by a 2 year warranty from Virginmedia which includes full technical support.

A 3rd party device such as the one quoted for £10 will not be supported by us and you will need to sort out the connection yourself or via 0845/0870/0905/6 numbers with the manufacturer the choice is yours.

Giving away that amount of kit would not save them a lot of money as the are most customers are on 10Mb it would more likely bring the company to its knees.

As for a free upgrade do not hold your breath.:D

But will the system allow a 50meg modem to work with 30Meg?

If it will work with 10Mb and 20Mb then why not 30Mb, I have seen many customers running these modems on the lower tiers.

Who do they use to ship the modem? Hopefully Royal Mail to make my life easier.

Damn not good news for me then, and will be a pain in the ass to collect after work if the depot is too far away.

Technically it's subjective, it's only free if they have DOCSIS3 kit. If not they have to pay £30 to upgrade.
