Ya, I was getting 2meg speeds from giganews and 5meg reported via Speedtest around 4am, going to see if it pans out... I have been looking on the forum and a lot of peopl eall over the place are having issues lately, so I will see how it goes, see if it gets better or not...

Maybe your modem has been cloned. There are threads in all the usual places about people scanning for and cloning 50meg modems. Even though they only use the old Ambit modems, they still get about 35meg down and 1.5meg up.

Sorry I was reading cook1984's comment as if the modem I am using had been cloned, as in I am using the original, and someone else is using a "cloned" version of mine...

Mine is definitely genuine (I hope) as I was here when the supervisor installed it and got it fresh out of the box, I still have the box in fact lol

They aren't cloning 50Mbit MACs to get those speeds.

It might explain why speeds have dropped a lot lately though. A friend of a friend of a friend is mixed up in all that dodgy business and he reckons about half of Portsmouth is doing it.

In fact, one of the guys who used to work at the same place I do used to do it. We still get people coming in looking for him with a Tesco bag containing something modem shaped every time VM knock a few of them out.

Having said all that, it really does just look like VM are starting the throttling/STM on 50 meg earlier than most people expected them to. Probably to limit the damage done by all the cloners, since they apparently thought it couldn't be done and have no doubt been caught out by the sudden rise in bandwidth requirements.

Just want to know how everyone is getting on with there service on 50mb. I have been getting the drops since installed and as I am working this week unable to test it as much as I would like. I am off next week so I will be doing loads of testing and contacting Virgin Media with my findings to try and get it resolved.

Downloaded 1gb of data this morning and was capped to 9Mb so still having problems will upload some screen shots tomorrow.

I think basically the network can't cope. It's old, it's analogue and it's not fibre. As predicted, 50 meg has failed to deliver, and is only set to get worse when STM officially kicks in.

Enjoy your 12 month contracts. It's only costing you £600 for this high level of service.

If it's running badly can't say I blame you, once it's fixed I'm sure you'll be happy to pay full price again :)

I've been told by the area tech manager and also the people at VMs customer relations that they have no intention to introduce the capping on the 50mb. Its been a recent briefing they have had to clarify it is not happening.
They explained that before there was one down stream and this was the problem also to mention the issue they have with the amount of bandwidth theft.
Now they have 3 down streams on the 50mb service (when it works right) there is no need to manage the network as they had to before.

As far as the 50mb issues and the speeds dropping... I've had a NIGHTMARE AND A HALF with mine which is still ongoing after 8 weeks...

There is no cap as when I was capped on 20 mb I got a extremely consistent 5mb during the capped period. The drop in speed on 50 mb is erratic - spikes between 1.5 and 2.5 and happens at odd intervals. It can last for hours or just minutes. I did report it and had an engineer round to lower my levels - to no avail. I have been about to call support since on a couple of occasions but each time the speed has picked up!

There is definitely a MAJOR problem with 50MB that I hope VM are aware of and working to fix - or maybe they are just burying their head in the sand?

I actually think they can't see the problem!
I've had enough visits from heated discussions with them now to last me a life time.
And your issues exactly mirror the ones I have and still do.
Today so far its been fine.

I'm using a proggy called PingPlotter pro. I've added their official 50mb test site 82.20.174.2 , BBC.co.uk, Google.com, news-europe.giganews.com, gamefiles.virginmedia.com, www.altavista.com

All of which when the 50mb speeds are OK these sites are fine NIL to little packet loss when downloading at full speed. When the speed drops, all these sites show MAJOR packet loss.

Here are some of the screen shots I did for the Tech on Usenet...

Speed at the time these was done was roughly 800kb - 1.2MB

When the speeds drop and if I am downloading. I am unable in most cases to be able to browse web sites or speak on voice chat software, MSN has kicked me out before as well.
Yet when the speeds are working at 50mb, I can MAX out the speed and do whatever I like. Latency is good usually as well at the time 50 is been maxed.
That can be with 20 threads on Giganews, maxing the connection (tried 10 also)

All of which to me, points at power issues or line noise.

After lots of phone calls to cs they are now sending me a tech round this Saturday,So will have to wait and see if the BB picks up a bit.
Paying for the full price,Yes be happy to do so as long as my BB is running OK.
"Virgin Media 50meg the mother of all broadband"...:) I KNOW WHICH MOTHER IT IS :)
